Fran’s replacement

His seat is hot according to who?

Fans haven't been attending for years.

Body language? Maybe. I've also heard it interpreted that he is more relaxed without his sons on the team.

Regardless, the product is the same thing it's been for 14 years.

I guess you all of the sudden can't see Fran as head coach next season because of his body language. Maybe there's something to that. We'll see.

Was just wondering if there had been some other development I had missed
That's not true, they won the B10 conference championship in 2022. Put down Purdue. Couldn't cash in on the success with getting talent.

Like I said in an earlier thread.

Give Chris Collins a shot. He’s done all he can at Northwestern & probably ready for a change.

Plus he’s a classy guy. Would like to see what he could do with a little better talent.

And he always has solid guard play.
Delusional.

Northwestern went to the NCAA tourney last year. Iowa did not. Collins has already finished ahead of Iowa in the league. His '24 team had more talent than Iowa's '24 team. Northwestern has better facilities and a far richer alumni pool....hell, they even get more fans at their games right now. Oh, and it's in Chicago....

Why in the absolute F*ck would Chris Collins for one second consider leaving Northwestern for Iowa? To play in Moline and South Dakota once a season? The regional recruiting advantages?

Seriously...I would like to know where your mind is at on this one. What advantages does Iowa have over northwestern? Lower admission standards is about the only thing I can think of.

Can you imagine Collins reading your post and doing anything but laughing? I can't.

I'd like to see them give a shot at the model that has shown it can work now.
Bring a guy in from a small school with success at that level. He gets 3-4 of his players to come with him. Play Moneyball with the rest of the roster. More money spent on players. Don't be afraid to bring in one year mercenaries. Targeted retention of the current roster. Let the others find a spot elsewhere. This is business.
100%

Well his youngest son will be graduating and leaving IC headed to Butler to play next year, which means he'll have exactly zero of his kids in IC. That could be seen as a development in terms of his motivation to stick around or not stick around.

**EDIT: Wasn't aware there was a sister who may still be in IC after this year.

Iowa is still a better coaching job than Northwestern. Chicagoland fanbase goes pro sports, Illini, and maybe NW gets some pub. Hawks are the show here.

On the other hand, Iowa City is a fishbowl (see: Olsen, Lute) and not for everybody.

Hawks are the show where? Iowa City and Coralville? In case no one noticed, Iowa State is the show “here” now.

I think it’s just a growing sense of apathy around the program, that may have hit a tipping point. I have no real data to back this up, other than my personal experience which is that I’ve reached a point when I frequently don’t know when the team is playing and often don’t bother to watch. I suppose it’s notable that I still care enough to post on a message board, but there’s no telling how long that will last. So, the evidence is anecdotal, but I know many feel similar to me.

The question I ask myself, though, is how much a new coach would help. Can my interest in Iowa basketball be resurrected to its previous levels? I’m not sure. If there’s a coaching change, my interest in the hiring process will be red-hot. And I’d probably be very curious to see what the new team would look like next season. After that … it probably depends on how well they do. If they get exciting players and make it into the second weekend of the tourney (or more), I’ll probably be on board for the ride. But if they are mediocre for a few years and fail to do anything notable in the post-season, my men’s basketball fandom may fall dormant for good.

I suppose either way, there is a real risk of the Hawkeye basketball team losing me as a hard-core fan.

If we finish this season as an NIT-ish team, which seems likely at this point, I doubt Fran gets fired. It’s hard to justify buying out coaches with middling success these days, especially with universities trying to find the money to pay the $20.5 million in revenue sharing for players.

But I do hope Fran leaves on his own. It seems like the time is right for all involved. Perhaps there’s a negotiated settlement that both sides can agree to, though I’m not sure there would be enough incentive to pursue that.

I just know I’m tired of being bored by Iowa basketball. I’m ready for change.

I believe you need to hire a coach with head coaching experience. Gatens needs to go to a smaller school and work his way up the coaching tree!
Unless Beth announces him without a search in 48 hours. That said, DeVries & McCollum are the two obvious inquiries. After that, no idea.

Maybe "product" wasn't the best word.

But who Iowa is has essentially always been the same under Fran. Their identity and strengths and weaknesses. It hasn't been uncommon that when Iowa looks bad, they've looked really bad

That's not a glowing recommendation to keep Fran.

I don’t think Beth has the balls to fire Fran mid season. If he steps down on his own that would be a different thing but don’t see neither one of these happening. Let’s just pray he’s done as soon as they play there one conference tournament game and that’s if they qualify for it!
Brian Ferentz would like to have a word...

You mean like Brad Stevens when he took on the Butler job?

It sure looks like writing on the wall with Fran as I can’t see him being the coach next season. With that said here are a few coaches that they need to look at hard!

Ben McCollum Drake
Chris Jans Mississippi St
Darin DeVries West Virginia
Jarrod Calhoun Utah St
Buzz Williams Texas AM (wildcard longshot)

Thoughts…

Darin DeVries

For those of you proposing Gatens.... how excited would you be about recruiting an assitant coach with 3 years of experience at Drake and then 4 years at Minny? If you are going to go after an assistant coach, at least go for one that has been mentored by a proven big-time winner.

Gaten's only significant selling point is his association with Iowa. With the resources Goetz has available, they need to aim higher.

Darin DeVries.... Gotta go all in on him and see what happens.

Chris Collins - not sure he'd move within conf
Niko Medved - Colorado State
Matt Langel - Colgate
Mike Morrell - UNC Asheville
Joe Pasternack - UC Santa Barbara
Bob Richey - Furman

Just find the young/hungry up and comer.

Program needs new life
Solid list, and YES, the program is just about as dead as it was when Fran was hired. Poor attendance. Embarrassing losses over and over and over again. If Beth is who people said she is, then the Iowa men's basketball program will be under new management this spring. There's just no other choice . . . other than dropping the sport.

No way in hell should anyone on this staff, especially one with no head coaching experience, even be considered. Gatens would be slightly ahead of rehiring Lickliter on my list.

It would be great if Matt G, was Iowa head coach someday given family Hawkeye history. But he needs show he has the ability to coach a winning program first, manage a program, recruit, etc. Hiring him post McCaffery is way too much of a risk at this point IMO.

Texas tech coach would be a top notch hire, young hungry with some decent results. Not sure how tt compares in resources but I feel Iowa can offer more money

Lol, you just won stupid post of the year!

Pretty impressive to end it in January. 🤣

Absolutely not. Big ten is not a training wheel program
Gaten's no, anyone that regimented to Fran that after having the scout of USC, Iowa's best chance to beat USC was to start the game in a man to man is not ready to take over a BIG TEN team. SHERMAN is too old, and the rest of Fran's minions have no shot at becoming Iowa's next head coach. End of story.....
