I think it’s just a growing sense of apathy around the program, that may have hit a tipping point. I have no real data to back this up, other than my personal experience which is that I’ve reached a point when I frequently don’t know when the team is playing and often don’t bother to watch. I suppose it’s notable that I still care enough to post on a message board, but there’s no telling how long that will last. So, the evidence is anecdotal, but I know many feel similar to me.
The question I ask myself, though, is how much a new coach would help. Can my interest in Iowa basketball be resurrected to its previous levels? I’m not sure. If there’s a coaching change, my interest in the hiring process will be red-hot. And I’d probably be very curious to see what the new team would look like next season. After that … it probably depends on how well they do. If they get exciting players and make it into the second weekend of the tourney (or more), I’ll probably be on board for the ride. But if they are mediocre for a few years and fail to do anything notable in the post-season, my men’s basketball fandom may fall dormant for good.
I suppose either way, there is a real risk of the Hawkeye basketball team losing me as a hard-core fan.
If we finish this season as an NIT-ish team, which seems likely at this point, I doubt Fran gets fired. It’s hard to justify buying out coaches with middling success these days, especially with universities trying to find the money to pay the $20.5 million in revenue sharing for players.
But I do hope Fran leaves on his own. It seems like the time is right for all involved. Perhaps there’s a negotiated settlement that both sides can agree to, though I’m not sure there would be enough incentive to pursue that.
I just know I’m tired of being bored by Iowa basketball. I’m ready for change.
