Fran gets a big in the portal; Josh O coming back?

If he doesn't get in better shape he will never have more than a fleeting minute here or there. I am not optimistic as he's had 2 years to do so. Light can always come on, hope he takes advantage of the opportunity.
I'd still be interested to know how much of that was covid related, as has been alluded too, and IF he can move past that this off season.....

Even though me and you agree on CMac but disagree on JO, **** YOU FOR NOT AGREEING WITH ME ON THIS.

Is that how it works Fran?
I hate you and you do drugs since you disagree with my opinions!!!!! I DEMAND A DUEL!!

The same folks who were complaining about possibly banking scholarships are now complaining about us bringing back a depth piece lol. Here's the reality, if Josh works his butt off and gets into shape and continues to improve his game then he could possibly give us more quality spot minutes this year. And if he doesn't, then Fran will have another hard talk with him next spring and send him back into the portal. Teams shouldn't play 13 guys deep anyways--this hurts literally no one.

I don't see much value in banking scholarships and I am okay with Bringing JoshO back, so that is counterpoint to your theory.

My guess is those that complained that JoshO was a waste of scholarship before he left would be the ones most likely complaining about him returning.

Well...I had hopes Josh would get more minutes last year...but I don't think he earned them. He's got potential, but he has to commit to developing the offensive skills necessary to succeed in the B10. You either have to be a defensive force/rebounding force, or be an offensive positive...I'm don't think he's either yet.

I'm hopeful he can progress and make and impact...but I think it's up to him to reshape his body and commit to being a B10 player.

We don't win the Big Ten championship without Ogundele playing solid minutes against Purdue. Call it luck, or call it anything you want, but he contributed that day. If he's good for eight minutes a game as a defensive matchup against a true big man, he helps this team. I don't consider him a liability on defense, and he helps others stay out of foul trouble. If he ever develops offensively, that's a bonus.
This times 1000. I jumped up from the couch only twice in that game, and those times were to colossal plays by big O.

We absolutely do not win that game without him.

he also showed huge defensive presents against Indiana.

his 10 minutes in most games next year could be the difference between five wins or five losses, which could be the difference between making NCAA or not.

sometimes I just can’t believe people on this forum. He’s coming back is probably not gonna affect a more athletic big transferring here.

Josh was a lot better this year than last year, and I expect him to be better next year than this year.

This is great news. Anybody who tries to spinet any differently is neither being objective, nor even deserve to be called a fanThis is great news. Anybody who tries to spinet any differently is neither being objective, nor even deserve to be called a Hawkeye fan. I just don’t understand why people would be so eager to throw him under the bus when at keytimes this year, he put the whole team on his shoulders and simply would not back down for big time bigs like cockburn or Bruce Dickinson - who puts his pants on one leg at a time like everyone else - or the monsters of Purdue.

Iowa needed O this year and needs him even more next year.

If we get another big, hopefully its a 4/5 who can shoot and move somewhat. I dont think our current 5s can play together in meaningful minutes.

Might as well have Josh come back. Plenty of scholarships available and might have another one with Kris leaving.

All the players in the transfer portal and Iowa brings back two of the worst players on the team. Hope to Sandfort get more minutes

This is good for Josh and the team. He showed flashes in the B1G title game against Purdon't. He'll deliver some quality minutes this Fall.

With the open schollys we can afford a 1 year player like Akwuba if he can be persuaded to come to IC for a year.

Rebraca...is not a "big".

Is a spinet a kind of piano?

Maybe. He was large before COVID, and is still large after COVID. Sounds like a bit of an excuse to me.
Possibly, but if he had long term covid issues, or myocardidas issues then intense training could be an issue. He was large when he got here because he was initially stuck in London and couldn't go anywhere to train because of the covid lockdowns, at least thats my understanding.

I think JO adds some needed depth. That being said, he needs to rid of the baby fat so he can become more mobile. I think he can be a contributor … but it’s up to him how bad he wants it.

He's had 3 years. He's a project that is always going to be a project.

The videos of him with his personal trainer are cute. Kind of like a little kid with a puppy. It makes you feel good inside. The difference is the puppy makes you look forward to coming home. JO does very little to move the needle.

SMH.

It really hit him hard. As others have noted, he was told to not play. It had to affect his stamina and conditioning. This kid has had 2 years of screwed up college, first getting stuck in London and missing all of summer conditioning and practices with his teammates, then getting sick his second year. It takes a pretty narrow, twisted mind not to have a little compassion and understanding for his situation.

@BBHawk

My response has very little to do with my lack of compassion.

It has everything to do with what's best for the Iowa BB program. And JO ain't it. Agree or disagree. I don't care.

Considering the hurdles JO has encountered, and the very little we’ve seen him play, I did t think we can make any conclusions about how good/bad he is.

Now, if he shows up overweight again, can’t play more than 5 minute stretches, and is just one of those good ball types….yeah then it’s time to cut ties.

I’d like to see what a full season of off season conditioning looks like before I make any further judgements. I commented during the season about this out of shape he was but that was before the health issue was made public.

Maybe we could all use just a little more patience(lesson learned)before completely writing him off.

From what I know, he has been a huge positive in the locker room and universally liked. Some say he's the funniest dude on the team. I love playing pick-up ball - not really to win any games. I just enjoy the humans I spend time with and get to know. Obviously, pick-up is not Big 10 ball, but chemistry is very important to a team, especially when we lose games in the middle of January.

He’s had two years in the program. After two years in the program, Acie Earl, Les Jepsen and Brad Lohaus looked terrible. They all went on to play in the NBA.

It just seems like, nowadays, the NBA and NCAA are just a collection of players that change over every year. I don't get the TEAM aspect anymore. Every recruit that has visited Iowa City - they all say the take away is the FAMILY atmosphere. Sometimes, I hold that value over advancing far in the NCAA Tourney. They'll be better humans for it.

Your response was disrespectful to him. Did you say similar things about Luka when he was playing with the tumor? Probably.

And I disagree until Josh O proves different. He deserves that.

Luka actually contributed valuable minutes. Josh O has had very few. And, no, I didn't say that about Luka. Thanks for trying though. Impressive

Give the kid a break. He struggled with long-term COVID issues. Kind of difficult to judge his fitness knowing that.
If the COVID issues are still lingering then maybe he should concentrate on his health instead of D-1 basketball. Does he have a medical redshirt year he can use?
