125- C minus, no shots, not aggressive, not physical.

133- B, ISU trying the stall and steal. ADS with injured squeeze hand looking like an issue.

141- B+, got the major but gave up a sloppy TD.

149- B+, tough win in season debut.

157- C+

165- B+, majored another stalling dead isu fish.

174- B-, I expected more scoring.

184- C+

197- D

295- A, got 6 points.

As a general rule in recent years, the dual has been mostly disappointing in terms of the on the mat action, imo.

That's why the post match antics tonite are getting some discussion.

If ISU could be just a tad more competitive, Dresser wouldn't have to try and change the narrative to "we fought back against the bully and they didn't like it".

Lil Bro being Lil Bro.

I guess ISU wants to be known as stall U. Outside of Carr, they made no moves but back pedaling

DeSanto - C, although that guy stalled the entire match, I’d like to see more scoring
Riddler - B-, he kept looking for that cradle
Murin - A, great first match
Young - C, this is just who he is
Bull - B, I’d like to see a different pinning combo attempted
Nelson - C, could you be any less aggressive. Warner - D, but he looked like a guy that hadn’t wrestled in a couple weeks. Between giving up 3rd period takedown and not being able to finish his this was a bad performance
Cass - A, if only he could have Princeton back

Nice to see Murin and Wallner back on the mat again. Go Hawks!!!

Where did Desanto lose his temper? The kid pulled his hair twice and on the second 1 the ref finally called it and then he gets elbowed in the side of the head walking the guy OOB. Just curious where he "lost his temper"?

125 D Would love to see more aggression here it's not like he's going to blow a seeding if he gets pinned or something.
133 B Attasauov seems to have scouted ADS well. I thought the stalling calls here were asinine. Glad Austin didn't freak out more.
141 A- Got the MD
149 B+ Glad to see Max back on the mat. He looked fairly healthy.
157 B Totally outclassed here but Young had a good strategy to keep it to decision.
165 A- Got bonus points looked tough. Would love him to develop a little more turning game.
174 B Brands looks small at 174. Boring match why can't he get on his offense earlier?
184 D
197 D Warner looked like he had a lot of rust and maybe was not 100%. Really wish Warner was more aggressive but he seems to be who he is
285 A Cass looks tough.
Referees F- I hate to bag on the refs it's a hard thankless job but come on!

I was at the meet and I thought there were a lot of cheap shots by the ISU wrestlers. They were obviously trying to get AD to lose his temper. The ISU wrestlers were out of control behind the benches. I was sitting right there. They were taunting the Hawks with any positive outcome. Running over toward the bench yelling and laughing. It was funny. Here they are getting beat, but yet they were taunting. The Iowa guys kept pointing to the scoreboard.

I thought the referee was awful. The two double stall calls were stupid.... He lost control of the match.

Im with you on the grades. The lack of actual wrestling in most matches was excruciatingly boring. Any outsider watching for the first time would have been amazed at the interest at something so devoid of action.

When he was walking the guy OOB...and across the mat...and across the floor...and up to the scorer's table where the opponent said "enough is enough?"

Well that table was pretty close and it didn't look that bad to warrant a swinging elbow back. But it's pretty hard to be on Desanto side anymore. He's painted himself into that corner. The Russian was stalling but it was the typical if he's not beating a guy like he should he starts in all his bs tantrums. It's beyond old

Maybe Field Hockey is more your style. Skirts and the whole nine yards.

This is exactly right. I wish I could have just watched a feed of the benches, because it was certainly more exciting than the middle school slow dance happening on the mat.

Pretty close? It's at least four to five yards from the circle, and ADS took seven steps from the circle to the table. ADS pretty much had him pinned against the table when he turned around.

ADS also walked right past one of the Brandses who had left the corner and was standing directly between ADS and the table right at the edge of the mat. Brands was grabbing ADS as the elbow was thrown: why would he feel he needed to do that?

I thought the ref did an acceptable job with 9 matches but really sucked on the 133 match. Calling the double stall while AD is offensive was ridiculous and then he wouldn't called earned stalls in other matches like with Young, Brands, or Warner (and of course ISU guys too).

It was obvious that ISU was coaching to keep it close. The guy was backing up the entire time with AD and he was also hanging on to his fingers. Dresser was raving about his performance--"had AD on the ropes". What match was he watching? A better referee and we might have had two stalling disqualifications:) Also, as far as 197, let's see what happens later in the year. Dresser was celebrating style points last night... Which means he lost again and that was without Lee, Assad and two other starters coming out after layoffs. I expect to see Lee soon and would bet that Assad gets a go in Florida... The team is still coming together.

i think tom spoke on this in his post match comments, but the only actual issue with that call is that it was based on a rule that never gets enforced. he called them both because they were interlocking fingers. that's supposed to be a stall according to the rules now, but it's rarely enforced. i think it was more attasuov because he was keeping desanto off his tricep to slow the match, but desanto needed to do a better job of looking like he was trying to avoid it. the bigger issue was the lack of stall calls in the second period when desanto was firing off attack after attack.

i think there's a balance between the "iowa is my team and therefore can do no wrong" approach of some on here and whatever this crying wolf is. oh he slowly walked him an extra 7 steps off the mat? oh the humanity! attasuov is lucky he's still alive after such a dangerous maneuver.

bottom line, the elbow was a disproportionate response. want to give him a little "get off me" shove? go for it. an attempted elbow to the head? should have been tossed.

I was responding to the obviously incorrect claims of "taking a step or two OOB" and "the table was close." Do you disagree? How should the ISU wrestler have responded when he finally got pushed to the table? Asked nicely to not be pushed *into* the table? Seriously, what should he have done at that point?

How do you shove someone who is standing behind you with his arms around your midsection?

most children have a better understanding of right and wrong. almost anything other than "elbow to the back of the head" would have sufficed. you're going to come on here and condemn austin desanto for walking a dude 7 steps at a leisurely pace and then turn around and defend an act that would have gotten that kid arrested if he wasn't on a wrestling mat? you can't strike someone because they did something you don't like. if you want to respond, give him a little shove as you both turn back to walk back to the mat. we see that type of exchange all the time. i assure you it was an option.

You obviously have no idea about Austin DeSanto do you? Educate yourself and it might come to you.

You should be far more concerned about Cornell finishing 7th at Cliff Keen, behind perennial powerhouses Wyoming, Purdue and Northwestern.

He elbowed him in the head. Should have been DQ'd

I give myself an F for believing that Ybarra was going to be a pretty good lightweight somewhere in the lineup. It obviously isn't there. Which leads to the question assuming Ayala is 125, who can take over 133 next season?
I think everyone was lead to believe Ybarra was a decent recruit coming in. There's a guy that posts here regularly that apparently saw him wrestle in high school that promoted him pretty highly. Chief?

Not sure why there's so little offense from the kid? It certainly seems like Ayala is the future starting next year at 125.

So, you really aren't going to answer my questions. I'm not defending the elbow. I'm asking what he should have done after being marched up to the table. Wait to be pushed into the table? Why did ADS keep pushing him, well past the mat?

Reductio ad absurdum: instead of a table, it's a cliff edge. Can he strike in that case? Where's the line between "can't strike someone" and "can strike someone"?

I learned everything I need to know about ADS when he deliberately attempted to injure Chaz Tucker in the EIWA tournament, after Tucker took him down at the end of the match for the win. He was penalized for that move. That was after ADS actually pushed Tucker into the scorer's table earlier in that period. What else do I need to know?

Next time, maybe Cornell doesn't leave behind four of their starters who have three AA certs on their record. Nice deflection, by the way.

He seems most comfortable working underhooks and then trying to go around. I have rarely seen him go underneath to try to get a single or high crotch. He's not the first young wrestler who has been risk-adverse in this manner. Watch Gilman's matches his first year. But Gilman obviously grew out of it.
