The last network tv series I watched was The Black Donnellys. I liked it, but it was too gritty for mainstream 16 years ago I guess. A Netflix type service could make it work now.

Rome was excellent.

I thought "Black Sails" was an excellent series that died early as well.

Revisit Rome. Push through when you want to quit. It is an awesome show that unfortunately cost too much money to make. So the last season covered about three seasons of content, just not as deep as it should have been.
