How to fix football

200.gif

The tide will change (absolutely no pun intended) ... What Alabama and Saban are accomplishing is unheard of ... Clemson ... Alabama ... OSU ... Oklahoma ... Still a separation gap ... But OSU did take it to Clemson ... Sort of like the NE Patriots ... eventually they won't be at the top ...

Alabama is just a machine ... They (physically) LOOK like an NFL team ... Props to these coaches who can bring in this amount of talent ... keep them eligible ... and keep on winning ...

For the rest of us (i.e. Iowa fans) ... yeah ... it stinks ... And then I think back to a couple of years ago when we hammered OSU ... I think there are "more" good teams ... just a handful who are "elite."

Can't really punish them ... unless they are bending the rules and get caught ... For now, we just have to take it for what it is ...

Since there is such an emphasis put on talent, and players are rated coming out of high school, why not limit all college programs to how many 5 star, and 4 star, rated players they can sign in a year.

"Hey son, I know it's been your life's dream to play for Alabama, and they want you, but unfortunately they've signed too many highly-rated guys at totally different positions."

Move Alabama to the NFC Central Division. Can you imagine what they'd do to the Bears?

The 0-16 Browns would wax even the best college team ever. Not even an argument lol

I remember hearing former Bama players stating that Bama could win multiple games if the Tide played a 16 game NFL season.

I mean Bama is crazy talented and all, but even teams like Jacksonville would beat Bama 42-14.

The cost of college athletics is becoming ridiculous. The pressure to win so as to generate league profits and NCAA profit is forcing the creation of a two tiered football world. Not even P5 vs everyone else. About ten or twelve programs vs the rest of the country. The social media and sports cable have created a self perpetuating form of oligarchy where the rich stay rich and get richer and the rest of us are mostly here to play the role of Washington Generals.

We also have to take a look at what the outrageous expense of a major football program devour many other traditional sports for boys and girls.

It would simple to reduce the schollies to a total of 60 with an annual limit of 12. Make some slight adjustment for filling schollies honored for injuries and maybe cover transfers, but no more Creaning. Eliminate specialized athletic housing. A specialized caff is one thing but opulent housing just seems like an unnecessary luxury. There might be a few other items. I'm not sure how it would be done but a little stricter scrutiny on the discretionary waiver of entrance or academic progress requirements, like Pat Ewing getting "oral exams" rather than tests at Georgetown. Almost every school has those waivers and almost every school uses them but some schools, and 'ol Bammy I'm guessing is one of those schools, are keeping no few boys on the squad that do not meet the academic standards applied to the general student body.

None of that will happen because the people that have all the gold want to increase their value not diminish it.

10-16 team playoff, literally every other level of football does this except D1.

It sounds nice but it would last all of 30 seconds to a court challenge. So we are going to tell a kid, "sorry I know you want to go to Clemson and it's theoretically a free country but they already have 5 5-star recruits so you have to go to another school."

Reducing scholarships helped disperse talent when they went from 105 to 85. Another reduction would help somewhat, but don't think there is appetite to do that either.

I don't know what the exact answer is. It's easy to say "get better" but when all the best talent goes to a handful of schools it's not as easy as just getting better.

The OP definitely is a socialist. Their goal is universal mediocrity. Drag the successful people down in the the mud with the failures. If everybody is a failure, everything is fair!

The answer is more likely get lucky. Yes, get better and beat them is a tall chore, but not impossible.

There have been blue bloods in every sport for decades, but not to this degree in College Football. I wasn't expecting Iowa Football or Basketball to win a National Championship in my lifetime, but strictly as a fan I would like to see a larger pool of schools have a shot at it than there is right now. (I'm a big Iowa Wrestling fan, so it would be hypocritical of me to say I haven't enjoyed decades of Iowa at or near the top in that sport, though they've been on a 10 year Title drought that would have ended last year if not for the China Flu).

College athletics now has its own Free Agency with the transfer portal, so if you have a successful program with maybe 1 or 2 "holes", you can bring in a guy like Joe Burrows, a big recruit sitting on another blue bloods bench. IMO, that's going to make it even tougher on The Field, because as it's proven out specifically with QB's (the most important position on the field), the blue bloods rotate those guys too.

In a free country this isn't likely to change anytime soon, but as a fan I'd like to see more variety, even if it's not my favorite team.

I would never advocate for punishing success, especially if it's done legally. So the only logical answer is prayer, and lots of it to hope your team gets into the mix! LOL!

Reduce the scholarships to 70-75. That would prevent teams from stockpiling talent. Those were extra ten players from the top team would have to play someplace else.

That still will not prevent Alabama from getting the kids they want, they will find a way to get that kid on their team, there will be a lot of grayshirts and walk ons to the top schools.

Why penalize a kid who wants to play for Bama, Clemson or OSU, by telling him he has to pick another team, because these teams are too good? That makes no sense and would never work, if anything with the Covid outbreaks and players missing games, I see the NCAA increasing the scholarships to add more depth to all teams at least until they get this covid mess under control.

Here's something that Urban Meyer used to always say about recruiting, he would always say that schools like Ohio State, Alabama, LSU and Clemson recruit to reality, while other schools recruit to hopes and dreams, which means that when recruits come into OSU , they can actually see the coaches wearing BIG championship rings and they can see the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 BIG championship trophies, they can also see the 2014 CFP National Championship trophy, so when the coaches say if you come here you can win one of these trophies and wear one of those rings, kids want to be a part of that.

Compare that to a kid going to a school where a coach has been there for some time and tells the recruit, that he can help them win a Natty or conference championship someday, but doesn't have anything to show, no matter how great that program is and how good the coach is, where do you think that recruit is going to go?

Now, not all recruits are enamored with winning championships and having rings, but the majority of the 4 and 5 star recruits want to win nattys and conference championships and are going to gravitate towards the schools that are winning those and we all know that kids these days don't want to help build something, but instead want to be somewhere where it's already built.

In the not so distant future...

Zoom call starting, Mark Emmert is calling Nick Saban after yet another Alabama National Championship.

[Mark] Good morning Mr. Saban, congratulations on your 4th straight! Wow, another blowout win! You are really a good coach!
[Nick] Thank you Mark, that means a lot to me, but I have to thank my assistants for getting such good players.
[Mark] You're welcome - well no sense dilly dallying, I'm here on behalf of the competion committee.
[Nick] Yeah, not much competion again this year, heh heh!
[Mark] That is so true, so to make things more competitive, we have come up with some new recruiting rules.
[Nick] Well, that's cute, shouldn't be to hard to beat - I mean, what have you got?
[Mark] Nick, there are all kinds of number guys on the competion committe, and those guys came up with the majical number 75 stars!
[Nick] What does that mean - is that anything like the Buckeyes on the Ohio St. helmets? Ha ha ha...
[Mark] Well, it is pretty simple, each division one school gets 75 stars per year, these stars come from the Rivals high school player ratings.
[Nick] Oh - well that would be OK, I can get 15 5-star kids and I am golden!
[Mark] Well Nick, it's not quite that easy. As you know there are only 30 5-star kids, and 380 4-star kids per year, so to make things 'fair' these high rated kids need to be distributed amongst the schools, and this majic number is 13 stars.
[Nick] Wait a minute, I see where this is going, I can only get 1 5-star and 2 4-star kids per year? This is outrageous! How will I keep winning...
[Mark] I'm sorry Nick, what did you say? The call is breaking up...
to be continued...?

Most sports go through dynastic periods.

UCLA MBB won 10 of 12 titles from 1964-1975 under John Wooden.

USC won 6 of 7 from 1964-1975 in baseball.

Penn State has won 8 of the last 9 in wrestling. We won 20 in 26 years in wrestling from 1976-2000.

Bama winning 6 of the last 11 really isn't as bad as some of you think.

It is interesting from a history perspective that very few things last forever. I won't sidetrack on the wrestling one (well I guess i will) but the pool of elite wrestlers is so much smaller compared to the amount of good to elite level football players and basketball players. But it's an interesting discussion.

Beat Bama, Clemson, tOSU, Oklahoma, GA, LSU, Texas, and Notre Dame by improving recruiting and out scheme them on the football field. Get better or lose.
That sounds nice but nobody can out scheme Alabama, just ask Ohio State, Clemson, ND, etc. If you don't like taking away scholarships, than give us your answer? The system in college football is broken. I would rather go back to the old days when the coaches and the media voted for a champion. At least then teams like Brigham Young, Colorado, Tennessee, Iowa, Yale, etc. had a chance. Now with the "eye test" and 5 stars all going to the same schools no one but AL, Clemson, OH St. and maybe a couple others have ANY chance. Even when the blue bloods lose they still get selected due to infamous "eye test."

In the not so distant future, the zoom call between Mark Emmert and Nick Saban reconnects...

[Nick] ... This is outrageous! How will I keep winning? I can't win with that mix of talent - how did your number guys even come up with those numbers?

[Mark] Well coach, the competition committee seems to think that if all schools had the same mix of talent, it would really come down to coaching and game planning.

[Nick] The reality Mark, is that if you don't consistently have superior talent, you can't consistently win.

[Mark] That's the point exactly! Evenly distributed talent should make every game competitive.

[Nick] What about all those really talented kids that have Alabama as their dream school, but they can’t get into Alabama because of two magic numbers? They are going to miss out being coached by me!

[Mark] Nick, don’t think about it in those terms. Think of all the opportunities these spread out talented kids are going to have – being leaders, setting school records! Just imagine some of this superior talent graduating from Vanderbilt and the opportunities that may bring.

[Nick] You really haven’t been around many recruits have you… I mean, it all sounds good and everything – may have to think about retiring… Well, goodbye for now Mark.

[Mark] Thanks Nick.
