******Iowa vs Ohio St Game Thread******

I just love her aggression and fearless play. They can teach her to expand her game. Well, maybe a lil.

Yeah, I’ll begrudgingly admit that. But she’s a shit. She just flat runs people over. She should have fouled out and that’s a fact. As a for insistence… how was that pile drive into Hannah not a foul on somebody😜 Hannah went straight up in the air with her hands way above her head and got knocked out of bounds and no charge🤷‍♂️…

And a huge pet peeve of mine, and this goes for JuJu too, who I actually think is a wonderful human being. When these women drive hard into the lane, half off Balance stumbling and the officials bail them out with a foul, is absolute bullshit as far as I’m concerned!!!!

You said it yourself just now. "...the officials bail them out..." I agree. It's on them to make the calls. Players want to compete.

On a related note, nobody’s beating ND anyway. After that it’s still Carolina.

Then you throw Texas, LSU, UCLA & UCONN in a bag and see what their draw is. I think So Cal lacks chemistry.

Nobody’s unbeatable but ND is the closest. They have 4 legitimate 1st round draft picks in their roster, Hidalgo, Miles, Citron and Westbeld. And Liatu King is no slouch!

And for the record, I’m no ND fan, but they are smoking the ACC and it’s a solid league.

The BIG is a rugged league w/the most depth. But the best teams are in SEC & ACC.

I know UCONN just smoked SC but their league is complete trash. That was honestly the best game they’ve probably played in three or four years. I don’t think they can sustain it.

Big Ten is the highest rated conference with the SEC very very close behind. ACC and Big 12 right behind. You’re over rating the ACC. UConn has the talent, they’re all 5 star players. If Fudd stays healthy they could certainly win it. They play ND again soon in Storrs. While SC is maybe down a step or 2 you don’t go in there and stop a 70 something winning streak and beat them by 30. I agree let’s see if they can sustain but they’re certainly as talented as anyone.

The athleticism or lack there of, is way overdone. I’m not picking on you, I’m just saying, it’s one of those clichéd things that we’ve been trained to say.

If you’re in the camp, that thinks USC was super athletic, by the way I’m actually not in that camp, I think they’re pretty average, but most people are in that camp. They absolutely did not look like the more athletic team in our game. And Ohio State today didn’t look like the more athletic team. They looked like the more physical team and they took advantage of it with the lack of consistent foul calls.

The men, I honestly don’t have any clue what they are or aren’t. I don’t watch them much. But my assumption is it’s still all about their inability to guard somebody.

As for whether or not his points have merit, yes, they clearly need to do all those things better. But I’m gonna make a statement that is honestly gonna be one of those “yeah, no shit” statements….

But you win or lose by making more shots and more free throws than the other team does.

Cotie McMahon at one time was three for 15. She got on the heater at the end. They also had the luxury of home cooking.

As has been discussed ad nauseam. Every one of these women on every team are wildly inconsistent even in the WNBA. The best, like Caitlin Clark, are historically, game to game more consistent and that’s why they’re superstars.

No nothing more nothing less🤷‍♂️
For me, athleticism on the offensive end, can you create your own shot or create for someone else. Olsen and Guyton are the only ones who can do that right now with some regularity. I wish Iowa would spread the floor with Stuelke in the high post so she can sweep and get to the hoop. Defense is a want to. If players understand angles and their gap, they can play good defense and keep players in front of them, even if they are not that quick. Players really only need to keep the ball in front of them for two dribbles, if the help is in the right position.

I don't think USC is all that athletic as well. They just have the one player that is a lot better than everyone else and you have to shade towards her. I do think if teams are able to crowd her, like Iowa did, she can get frustrated and press.

You could be right about the ACC, I’m not a fan, in fact I’m historically anti-ACC and the “over” coverage they get in MBB. But ND is outstanding & they smoked Duke today, that may or may not be as good as their ranking. Honestly, you really could be, and I hope you are, dead on. As a league they’re really tough for me to gauge. Is UNC that good, is NC-St? Is Duke?

They are all ranked pretty high? Then again South Dakota State played Duke very close and Ball State did the same with Carolina in their early season. But as I look now, of the three aforementioned teams, Duke is the only one who has some street cred really. They did beat Kansas State and Oklahoma.

And just having a rambling conversation with a fellow women’s basketball fan as the tournament nears: I’ve been paying close attention to the mid-majors. For example I watched Colombia/Harvard play the other day. Both highly ranked middies and if they got the right match up or caught a team sleepwalking, they could win a game in the tournament, but they lack any real Athleticism or explosion.

There are only 4/5 maybe 7ish Mid-majors who are dangerous. SDSU, Richmond, maybe Ball St, Maybe Grand Canyon, St Joe’s, George Mason, maybe Norfolk St?

And although I am as big, a big 10 homer as there is… I’m personally not convinced Illinois or Indiana or Michigan State or even Ohio State is really all that great🤷‍♂️ I hope I’m wrong, but if they are, we are only a few breaks and some momentum from being hard to knock out. Very, very few teams have no blowout losses on their résumé. And although we have eight, we were very close to winning all those games.

I do think the SEC‘s top four-Ish are very good. And yes, UCONN has five star talent 10 deep but they don’t have the cache’ that they once did. I also don’t like them, so there’s that 🤓

Yes, she definitely gets frustrated. She elbowed a girl walking by her vs Washington the other night, because they were crowding her so tight. And yes defense is all want to, but it helps to be uber-athletic and long like Kylie….😀 What you’re talking about in my opinion on offense is just pure raw talent & basketball skill. For example, AG is much more athletic than Lucy and I’m not sure I trust her to “get” the last shot off🤷‍♂️ and although I’m a big Hannah fan, I’m not sure she sees the floor well enough to be in the high post. I do think she has the ability to sweep to the basket like you’re talking about, but in all honesty Addie O’Grady, who the fellow you responded to absolutely despises, is really our best passer out of the interior. She’s just slow & really those cut passes are taught to her and rhythmic. She has a knack for throwing them well, but they’re not spur of the moment finds. Ava does not have that skill yet.

It’s really not hard to see what they’re attempting to do and why some girls play versus others if you just open your eyes. Iowa isn’t particularly skilled w/the ball & when shots aren’t falling, they struggle. I’m fairly certain that that’s why Jan has really emphasized defense. It’s the one constant. It’s also why I quit watching the men play. They couldn’t guard a concrete statue if they were chained to it.

It’s also why, even with our putrid offense in football I’ve always watched every game to the end because their defense was extremely legit. To lose a couple of the games this year the way we did was heartbreaking for me.😭

Back to the women, our defense was OK today, but it wasn’t up to the level it was versus USC or Rutgers or really several of the teams we’ve played of late. The shitty foul calls didn’t help. 3 girls fouling out is a problem and should be red flagged 😒

Yes, I agree for the most part. But I think you are undervaluing athleticism. USC and Ohio State is definitely more athletic, but I think our girls had more grit and determination.

In my humble opinion, (and not accusing you of anything at all, just all of our natural bias/stereotype, etc, we all have them ) It’s because USC is predominantly, black, and Iowa predominantly white.

First and foremost, I doubt there’s a better athlete on either team than Kylie Feurbach. Juju is not a great athlete and yet it is pretty commonly “assumed” she is better than say a “CC” & I think you would probably agree CC is a vastly underrated athlete & it’s because she’s white. Her lateral movement is fairly average, maybe a little above average, but her speed up and down the court, and her jumping ability is well above average.

Syd is a terrific athlete, Hannah a terrific athlete. McCabe 🤷‍♂️, Lucy, more crafty than athletic. AOG, no, AG, excellent, the other three freshmen probably better than they get credit for…

However, that’s just a pet peeve of mine as I’m thinking about it. Ohio State probably is more athletic USC, Im not really sure I can agree with that…

Your overall thought, however, certainly has merit!

I'm like you in that I don't see color when determining athleticism. JuJu and CC are tremendous athletes and that has nothing to do with the color of their skin. They both are strong, fast, agile, quick, smooth, finesse, etc. In my mind, I think Hannah Stuelke and Angel Reese are athletes too though they are missing touch and finesse to be on CC and JuJu's level.

I can get on board with Syd being an athlete, though I might confuse her lack of athleticism with her strong desire to compete (off the charts). She has lots of grit and is a tremendous fighter (maybe a component of athleticism?)

I agree with you that Iowa women's basketball team has athletes. I also think that there are teams in the Big10 that are more athletic than Iowa and if Iowa is not running on all cylinders, they will lose to that more athletic team.

I do wish that Hannah could pass and shoot like AOG along with her current athleticism.

True, but for me, they typically lose to someone who is playing cleaner
