Agree. In most homes parents play an important role. Even if it’s just with guidance, financial perspective and letting the athlete know it will ultimately be his very important life decision.

I disagree on the parents sway. I don’t know a wrestler now that gives a crap what their parents want. It’s pretty much the opposite.
I would hope a quick reminder of who has the money and who doesn't should suffice, among many other life lesson possiblities.

After his visit to Stanford Garvin changed around some of his classes to what Stanford wanted to see him taking. Yes and I don’t know why but there is a rift between Brands/BGW/ and Garvin’s parents. Garvin liked some time he spent at ISU camps. So, unless thing change drastically, not coming to Iowa. Sounds like Stanford or ISU.

Hahaha they may not “care” but when the parents are footing the bill then they have some sway lol.

Voelker visited Iowa and still has them in his top 5 as far as I've seen announced. With that said it tells me that the supposed rife between Iowa & BGW is off a bit.

I did not have complete control of where my son went to school, but he listened to my thoughts and weighed them. It is a big decision for kids and they are usually confused and want some guidance from someone they trust. If your children do not listen to you at all, then either they are going thru a very rough patch in their life, you generally give terrible advice (such as being demeaning or out of touch), or you are not someone they trust. IMHO.
As a side note, look at all the trouble Lee had choosing Iowa over PSU. His dad has talked about how he struggled with the choice. It is difficult for kids to make such a big decision with so little info and real life experience.

With the signing of hill wouldn’t that mean volker is out. And I know the the old lines iron sharpen iron or don’t run form anyone. Iowa has to be getting low on scholarship money and hill will be same weight as volker 197. Yes I know not everyone is getting scholarship money in this class but probably half the class is. Also as I’m typing this Iowa does have a lot of seniors coming off the books this year. Just don’t see Iowa picking up two guys at same weight and using scholarship money to do that.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager on Hill being a heavyweight. He may cut down to 197 but I see him bulking up. Kueter will miss a lot of action if he does both football and wrestling. Hill and Fleshman will add some much needed depth at the weight.

I don't know what I don't know, but Hill does not fit the profile of someone receiving a material amount of scholarship $$$. Not a highly ranked recruit. (Not being negative on him, just a reality.) Also thinking he's a HWT.

We currently have Warner and Glazier on the roster, which were both bigger recruits than Hill. We also had Gabe C. at the same weight as those two, and he was as high profile as Hill. The coaches will keep recruiting 197.

If Garvin is considering Stanford and Cornell he has to be a good student, so an academic scholarship of some amount should be in play.
what kind of a degree does he want? If it’s engineering then his current top schools make sense.

my nephew was a pretty damn good football player in high school. Iowa state coaches came to his high school and he wouldn’t talk to them. My sister and brother-in-law were beside themselves. He said “Nope, I don’t want to play there, my heart would never be in it.”
Here endeth the lesson.
When an athlete is vehemently against going to a certain school, Sans is right and
sometimes the kids are mama’s boys.

I don't see the Hill commitment having much affect on their 197 recruiting.

The IAWrestle write up on Hill’s commitment has him competing at 285.

Hill walks around at 207 and if I was betting man he will wrestle 195 this season. I don’t see heavy weight in his future but I’m not the coach

Dang, I’m confused.

I thought Sans said kids don’t listen to parents anymore. And your nephew seems to back that up by refusing to see coaches his parents want him to talk to.

Where are the moma’s boys?

Hill is a heck of a scrapper, has really come a long way in a short time and may end up being a total stud but if you are running one of the top teams in the country you don't call it good after a commit outside the top 100 overall. I think he goes 197 to start with.

Not sure why anyone would be shocked by this. You're talking about 1 specific school that the kid didn't want to go to, which likely means he grew up "hating" Iowa State. That certainly doesn't mean kids don't listen to their parents. I would put it more in the Department of No Shit Sherlock if that assumption about ISU is true. I would guess this happens quite often, especially if you have options.

If he was good enough to get a DI offer then he most likely had others and should have had multiple FCS offers, which all pay the same. Full Rides.

I would also surmise that about 99.9 % of kids are Momma's Boys.

Did he get smaller since last year? He won state at 220 last year. Would be interesting to drop down as a senior though it does happen.

Random comment...Mike Humpal won state twice at 215 while walking around at 200-205 on full feed. There was no 195 and he didn't feel like cutting to 189. Why? Because he's Mike Freaking Humpal.

99.9%? Nah, that's way off my friend. There are a lot of shit mothers out there. A mamma's boy is someone who has an unhealthy reliance on their mom after getting to the age of self-dependence.

I moved out when I was 17 and never looked back. I'm definitely not a .01%er either. We have a amicable relationship. The best part of becoming an adult is that you can make your own decisions in life.

Hill started the season at 195 last year. He moved up mid season. The reason I think hill will go down is he’s never beaten kueter.

I guess we have a different definition of what a Momma's Boy is then. And no doubt there are some shitty Mom's out there, but I think that number is pretty small.

My Mother is awesome, and always has been. Guess I got lucky. 🙂

He was not a full 220. I read 210-215 somewhere.

Oh, of course that’s a thing, but I have a steady rotation of the top wrestlers in the state at my house every week. It’s closer to 90/10. It just stupid to think an eighteen y/o kid gives a shit about where their parents want them to go to school. Did you? Probably a mama’s boy, so yeah.

Passive aggressive much? You don’t know ****.

In the words of one of the best recruiters in D1, "if you want the kid, win the mom."

Parents still matter.

I’m going to stand by my statements. Maybe if they’re some effed up helicopter parents, but I still have not had one kid that cares where there parents want them to go or any parents tell their kids where to go. I struggle wrapping my mind around that even happening. They’re are 18, unless they did the Oklahoma redshirt, it’s their life. Okay, I’m done with this discussion because I’m right and anyone that disagrees is wrong. Jk

A lot of times, if you've raised your kids right, they tend to follow along with where your guidance would lead them without realizing it, even if they like to think they're doing it all on their own and don't care what their parents think.

And you believe everything these teenage kids tell you? Lmao. Anyone have the why so serious son gif? Haha

See that Mickey Griffith is wrestling for Big Game this weekend. I guess that contradicts the narrative that Iowa will not get BGWC guys.

Iowa wrestling has the ability to get anyone, but there’s no denying the bad blood between the Carews and Brands. Maybe things have smoothed over a bit, but this notion certainly isn’t fiction. And let’s face it, it would be bad business for any club coach to project their experiences on to an athlete. But there’s most definitely an ISU flavor at BGWC. And DSJ didn’t leave IC on good terms either. Dylan and Derek are very tight. Just a fact. Who’s “right” or “wrong” is a matter of opinion. I say this with the a ton of respect and admiration of Dylan, Derek, and our staff. DSJ is one of my all time favorites…. On and off the mat.

I don't doubt it a bit. But Iowa's "business model" is a lot better than Iowa State's is, and as long as that holds true it won't and doesn't matter. The proof is in the pudding, and wherever Hunter Garvin ends up isnt changing that. Pimple on an elephant's ass sort of thing (no disrespect to young Mr. Garvin, I hope he's happy wherever he lands).
