I now have a new hate for Nova fans

I am opposite of the OP. I am actually thinking much more of them and their creative posters.

I never understood the mentality of the original poster. "They are posting on our message board!! ewww. Get away. You guys have cooties!! I hate you guys now!!"

And really, is there much negative being said about Iowa? It is more a rag on Temple gala than a bash Iowa theme over here right now.

I never understood that type of stuff. Like its someone's turf of something. The JV get all rustled with some MB posters, when they go over there on the national board. When really, they should respect the humor and creativity. Someone spent time putting in work, and that should be appreciated.

Listen I don't mind if a an opposing team fan wants to come over and talk about the game and match-ups and what not. But these guys came on and started talking trash and calling us hillbillies. They kept on bragging about their program and what not. I get it they are good, but to come to another teams site and talk like that, it just goes to show that they have the little brother syndrome going. It would be the same if I went over the Cyclonenation and started talking about football. It would scream little brother and personally most of them wouldn't care for it. It just makes no sense to do that, even when we are not even matched up to play one another yet!

Wait till Friday night.

But you guys are hillbillies. At least that is the stereotype. We watch the Iowa Cockus coverage, our opinions are based on real information. If we are wrong, say otherwise.

And feel free to call us a bunch of greeseball eyetalians if you want. Make fun of Philadelphia's cultural hero, Sylvester Stallone. Crack some cheese steak jokes. Rip on the Eagles or the Philly Phanatic. Call CoP (City of Philadelphia) a wannabe New York that more closely resembles Detroit. Make fun of CoP'ers (Philadelphians) for generally being afraid to leave the CoP and lacking the culture and sophistication of New Yorkers. Make fun of our huge percent of students from New Jersey.

And then we can have a back and forth about each other's cultures and locations and learn more about each other. You can talk about college wrestling and football and we can explain to you that nobody in the northeast cares, and we can talk about subway commuting, fine dining, expensive clothes and the NFL and you can explain to us that you have no idea what we are talking about. You can talk about boiling corn and cooking meth, and we can talk about boiling lobsters and the Temple community cooking crack rock. And we can also talk about the teams and discuss the pro's and con's and strengths and weaknesses of the game.

Some of your posters are cool. Sandiegohawk is even doing a taking questions session over on www.vusports.com, he is an honorary bench warmer this week.

This is great for you and all, but Villanova hasn't exactly lit the basketball world on fire either.

You need some lessons from our rival B1G members on how to talk trash, this stuff is just too weak.

Villanova has been a great regular season team the last few years, but they have only won 3 total NCAA tournament games this decade and have yet to reach the Sweet 16 since they went to the 2009 Final Four. Their 3 NCAA tournament wins were Robert Morris (in OT), UW Milwaukee, and LA Lafayette. Not a lot of fond memories to look back on.

Fortunately the five years prior had a whole bunch of fond memories, so excuse Nova fans if we aren't as doom and gloom as you would like us to be for not making a Final Four in 6 years.

Anyway, the other two opponents in our pod, Temple and Iowa, have not reached a Sweet 16 since 2001 and 1999. And they mock us for not going to a Final Four since 2009? Just saying....

12 NCAA wins in the last 10 years including a Final Four appearance isn't too bad.

I keep seeing Iowa fans try to teach us that we aren't on Kansas or Duke or UNC or Kentucky's level like its a bad thing.

We know that. Duh.

We have a pedigree that more closely resembles schools like Georgetown, Syracuse, Maryland, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Arizona, Texas, Marquette, Florida, etc... Schools that make the occasional final four, have a national championship trophy in their case, are tourney regulars, are usually ranked, put guys in the NBA, and generally have high exposure teams that are fun to watch. We know where we stand. And I don't see a lot of chest pumping about it. You guys are the ones who keep telling us we are not Duke. No crap we aren't Duke or UNC. But how many teams are?

Yeah I would take that. We had a string like that back in the 80's and early 90's, but we let go Tom Davis and since then our program has been cursed and in the dumps. I blame our AD's for terrible coaching hires, but I think they finally got it right w/Fran. During that time you mention 5-6 of those years we were spent living in the dark ages of hell because of Todd Lickliter. If Nova fans want some good reading, just google Todd Lickliter at Iowa. You will laugh, because in 3 years this guy destroyed our program. Steve Alford gets part of the blame, but Todd seriously destroyed it. Now Fran is having to work his tail off to bring it back. I seriously thought it would take 4-5 years and it has! Fran is slowing building it back up. Maybe in 3-4 years we will get back to where we were before we fired Dr. Tom.

Tom Davis is Keno's father, right? He also had a pretty good run at Boston College in the early 80's.

Fran has actually done a pretty good job at Iowa. He was solid at Siena too. We like to make fun of him because of his family ties to Villanova. His brother, Jack, is a sports writer for one of the small regional rags. He is a Nova alum but hates Jay Wright because we hired Jay over Fran in 2001 so he likes to bash the program. He called Villanova basketball a cesspool that should be shut down when he passed on his brother as coach. Although that has stopped since Jay was able to turn the program around and has had success.

Villanova is a good basketball program. Even if you have hit a rough patch in the NCAA tournament lately.

Seriously though, you don't see a lot of Nova fans here saying "we're the best, bow down to us..." like you would see from the bandwagon UNC or Kentucky fans. There have been some responses defending the program upon criticism that our last Final 4 was six years ago, but that should be expected. There was some response to the posters who were saying that Rutgers and Penn State were big time and Nova and Georgetown are small time because we play in a league that, at least on the east coast, is every bit as respected as the big ten.

And generally there hasn't been a lot of bad mouthing of your program. There has been some back and forth, but nothing outrageous.

Trust me, we are not like the johnny come lately bandwagon fans that a Kansas or Kentucky or UNC have that infest these boards. Most Nova hoops fans went to the school, or have family that went to the school, or have grown up rooting for the team, and just generally like college basketball and the current state of the program. Nothing more, nothing less.

Perhaps. And when you keep it about sports, I don't mind your point of view. But when you go on a dick-measuring diatribe about Nova being a 60k a year school and how financially successful Nova grads are and blah blah blah and then it becomes a "bow down to us and our awesomeness" self-aggrandizing boast.

And that's when the majority of us roll our eyes and wish you would just go away and brag somewhere else. Because apparently you have mistaken us for people who actually care.

We could see exactly what kind of fans you are the moment you made your first posts. Obnoxious, loudmouth shittalking east coast people coming here to ruffle some feathers trying to get into some spats. Good for you.

And we could say that you are a bunch of over sensitive, easily offended, bitter Midwesterners clinging to your religion and guns and voting for Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin, eating corn and watching the grass grow with no real cultural exposure or worldly experience.... (and of course we would know that the overgeneralization is probably not true...)

Like EZ said in another thread, to each their own.

You realize that the bitter Midwestern comment is a joke from Obama campaign in 2008? It is a line we quote often on benchwarmers. It's like when we refer to Temple or Rutgers people as 47%ers (the Romney line from 2012).

Geezus, some of you need to lighten up.

To set the record straight, not that I agree or disagree (I'm a registered Independent), Iowa has voted Democrat in nearly all presidential elections after Reagan with the exception of 2004.

Also, I consider myself a Bible-believing, God-fearing Christian who thinks like the 1st Amendment there should be limitations on the 2nd Amendment. I also would not vote for Ted Cruz or Sarah Palin.

My point is most Iowans are free thinkers who believe progress and traditional values are not necessarily in opposition to one another.

Yes, also men's soccer, baseball, lacrosse, rowing, track and field. There also is a club hockey team. I don't know too much about the football team but the QB got hurt last year and they didn't have a good season. I don't really follow college football. How did Iowa do?

Fair to middlin'.

Thanks for asking.

Glad you all eventually saw through their charade of posing as us and saw them for what they really are . . . though please don't paint all east coasters with the same brush as THEM.

You'd think being the basketball powerhouse they claim to be they'd have more players in the Association. I am a fan of Darrun Hilliard though, Stan Van has been giving him more minutes lately.

Some of the best times I had when I lived in DC was when I was out with the folks from Iowa.

Great, thoughtful people with terrific pork recipes.

Kyle Lowry has started the All Star game the past two seasons.

Nova's style isn't really the high end NBA guys. Jay has made his name on guys ranked in the 50-150 range who stay for four years. That results in real good college players, guys who are going to make decent coin oversees, but Villanova is certainly not a NBA factory. It's a good formula that has worked well for Villanova the past dozen years.

Guys like Darrun Hillar are a good example of Jay's player development. He was not even a top 150 player out of high school and now he's in the league. Dante Cunningham is still cashing NBA checks, he was not a top 100 player. Randy Foye was a lottery pick, but only rated around 70 out of high school. Kyle was a top 50 player, but at his size nobody would have expected an early exit to the NBA and to be a NBA All Star game starter. But then you also have guys like Hart, Jenkins, James Bell a few years ago. These guys were not big time recruits but went on to be all conference type players. Jays' wheel house is finding those type of guys and developing them as upper classmen. As a fan it is enjoyable. Darryl Reynolds is this year's breakout guy.

Of this year's team, the NBA potential is:
Ochefu should catch on with a team, but he projects to be more of a practice player who is on a roster because of his size
Hart has some NBA potential, but he needs to work on his half court offensive versatility to have a shot
Jenkins has an outside shot at the NBA. He has a NBA caliber jump shot and decent size, but his athleticism does not translate to the NBA
Brunson was the top rated PG out of high school, but he is not overly athletic and has average size. He is super skilled and crafty but we are going to have to wait and see if that translates to a NBA opportunity
Mikal Bridges is most people's pick as NBA potential. red-shirt freshman. One of those lanky 6-7 guys, super skinny but great athlete. Still has a lot of work to do before this becomes a reality though

In 2015, Lowry only started because Raptor fans like Drake & Bieber told their own fans to vote him in. Fans should not be allowed to vote starters in the all star game. Lowry has been tearing it up this year though.
Cam Payne should be getting all of Foye's minutes the final 15 games but Donovan wouldn't dare try anything drastic. The "Campaign for Cam Payne" crowd will be making more noise in April.

None of this matters as I think Iowa will beat Temple handily then lose to Villanova on Sunday.

Hey, I'm not disagreeing with you.

But we see it all the time. We are recruiting a kid, but once we start hearing they may be one and done we back off. Jay is not against guys going early, but he knows his formula for success and he would rather have a seasoned 23 yr old than a more talented 19 yr old who won't be around for the long haul. Jay could have had Rawle Alkins if he was willing to offer. Could have had Rysheed Jordan. But he got burned going after guys eye'ing early entry with the Maalik Wayns/Dom Cheek class and has opted for more program guys than potential pros.

As a fan it is nice because we get to see the kids develop and grow.

Sounds to me like Villanova basketball fans are a lot like gopher hockey fans.. They want so badly for it to be the biggest deal when in reality we all know that when August rolls around this country is all football..

When August rolls around Villanova fans are football fans too, except it's for the Eagles/Giants/Patriots. I guess there are some Penn State fans, but NFL drives the bus in the Northeast.

Villanova is essentially that judge from Caddyshack. Hey you belong to the country club and sure want to be taken seriously but just aren't that impressive. Jacking your tuition through the sky doesn't make you an Ivy. Iowa is a much better institution than you and you just can't stand the thought. Sure we may be a little like Rodney Dangerfield but try not to scratch our anchor with that little boat of yours.

I'm not an Iowa fan. I'm merely providing evidence of better smack to talk in regards to Villanova. If Jay Wright gets bounced early again this year, is he going to hear some calls for his job?

You'll hear a few morons call for his job. The large majority of fans will see the big picture. Jay has been a great fit at Villanova and will never lose his job if he consistently makes the NCAA Tournament. Upsets happen all the time even to teams like Duke.

so making the NCAA tournament is the goal at Villanova?
