Conservatives Are Melting Down Because Lizzo Played James Madison’s Crystal Flute

JAMES MADISON DEFEATED DeWitt Clinton in 1812 to secure a second term in the White House. To commemorate his inauguration, a craftsman from Paris made him a crystal flute. The flute eventually made its way into the possession of the Library of Congress and sat unplayed until this week, when Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden invited Lizzo, a classically trained flautist, to blow a few notes and even take the piece of history onstage during her concert in Washington, D.C.

The tweets and reactions are hysterical.

The conservative Columbia Bugle called it a “humiliation ritual.” Right-wing commentator Greg Price wrote that “they” want to “degrade our history and then call you a racist if you actually value it.” Trump appointee Darren Beattie described Lizzo as the “perfect representative of the American Globalist Empire.” Trump superfan Nick Adams tweeted that the “Biden Administration is making a mockery of the country.” Former GOP congressional candidate Andrew McCarthy said everyone involved “should be deported.”

The party of victimization and low self esteem for sure. I'm sure if it had been a pretty young white girl, there would have been no problem.
My guess is they weren’t upset about the fact that Lizzo is black. They were probably offended by the fact that she wore a leotard that exposed half of her ass and then twerked while playing it.

But that’s just my guess. Personally I don’t really care about James Madison’s flute.

Also fuggin’ dumb, like most Conservative whiny ass non-issues. I absolutely love that this triggered those losers so much.

So that offended the flute or James Madison heirs? Or does your party need need to huddle up and figure that out after Tucker?

I don’t know. You’ll have to ask Andrew McCarthy and (checks notes) Nick Adams.

Hate to break it to them, but I doubt she’s the first black woman to play James Madison’s flute.

Man, I thought this was going to be one of those chose your own adventure type threads.

In case you needed more evidence that conservatives are the world's biggest...

Seriously, though I have three thoughts.

1. Who cares? Now, had she dropped and broke it, then we'd have a thread
2. Had this been Shania Twain, it'd been a non-issue
3. A thong? Oof (see #2)

Yeah, not a peep if it's Carrie Underwood

The last sentence doesn't even make sense. That's what you do when you're a conqueror. Humiliate the conquered.

Who is the conqueror and who is the conquered in that ridiculous statement?

That's what you [white people] do when you're a conqueror. Humiliate the conquered [black people].

or

That's what you [black people] do when you're a conqueror. Humiliate the conquered [white people].

Not sure either makes a lick of sense.

That guy is an idiot. His tweets are ridiculous.

Mr Potato Head, Sesame Street and now Lizzo. Up next is the Apocalypse.

Idk why, but things like this really upset me. Just so outraged at the moment.
For some reason, I heard this ^ like this...

Even if Carrie wore a leotard that showed half her ass and then twerked while playing the flute? How about Lady Gaga? Miley Cyrus? I’m guessing there would be similar backlash in those cases.

Conversely, if Lizzo had worn a evening gown and played the flute respectfully, I doubt you’d see as much criticism.

Not absolutely everything is about race.

I'm pretty sure that we all know how the response to that would go. Hell, MAGAs were all about Trump banging and paying off that ridiculous looking porn just because she was a blonde porn star.

If the guy you’re willing to sell the country out for sought advice on North Korea from Kid Rock, you don’t get to bitch about Lizzo.

This. Trump is slowly falling apart with his supporters. Time for desantis to man up.

These days it's hard to decipher between what is race and what isn't. I couldn't care less about the color of the gal playing the instrument. However, I'm a proponent for modesty (and I, of course, understand what constitutes modesty is subject to opinion and interpretation). Therefore, I have to take the stance of, "Meh. Not interested [flips channel to Andor]."

Could you give us the time stamp in this video of her playing Madison’s flute where the leotard and twerking happen?

Lots of immaturity and vulgarity here. Again, I have two handles. One is 55 only for BWI posts. I’ve spoken with everyone in charge, and we’re all clear. Have a good night.

I think it's basically that Lizzo is sort of an avatar of something the left loves, and the flute is an avatar of something the right loves.

From the right's perspective... Lizzo playing the flute is of course going to be a showy political stunt that all of the left is going to applaud... and they're probably doing it, to an extent, to poke at the right. Plus, this is a sacred, irreplaceable piece of American history that should be respected. Not a toy to be played with.

From the left's perspective... there's something delicious about a black woman playing this sacred piece of American history that previously belonged to a slave owner. The right won't like it because of latent bigotry.

I see valid points going both ways. Yeah, there are probably political overtones to the event that were realized by those creating the event. (although if you show me history of plenty of other people playing the flute in that manner, that argument is weakened -- still, in today's political climate? You sort of knew what you were getting into)

I can also appreciate the symbolism involved. I can also appreciate the concern over toying with a "sacred object."

Personally.. don't really care so long as there was no chance the damned thing was dropped and broken. I hate ruining irreplaceable stuff.

This is the right straying off into paranoia, into full on hyperbole. Ascribing intent that wasn't there. Which is so common anymore.

They had perfectly good line of argumentation they could roll with... but you get way too much junk like that.

The strong argument appears to be something along the lines of...

"This is a priceless piece of American history; a founding father's fragile crystal flute of over 300 years in age and we're letting someone parade around with it casually on stage for a bit of political symbology that's serving more as entertainment than enlightenment."

The flute nobody knew about last week is sacred?

I have no problems with her playing the flute. Whatever it takes to keep her from singing...

Wow. So I guess liberals should be called dumbasses because boozie badass is calling for a boycott of the Dahmer Netflix for being racist. Who gives a full k.
