******Iowa vs Illinois Game Thread******

You shoul open your eyes and get over you special love for Harding. He might have been a good High School player. He's a backup quality PG at this level. Don't take it personal---unless you are him Dad or family friend or relative.

And he might be our most impactful player tonight.

You know how bad a team is when the start of the broadcast the announcers spend the vast majority of the time PC-ily saying that the team playing Iowa need this game to "get right".

Not even really giving Iowa a chance in Hell, just saying that the opponent needs to do what it needs to get back on the right track.

He’s the only guy playing hard out there.

Well he did bet back door cut a couple times when we were still sort of in the game. He's a gym rat that excels at wide open don't give a chit basketball. I'd keep him on roster as a backup PG but no way he starts on a good team. The defense is automatically behind the 8-ball having go cover for him being tiny and he's never going to be able to go out and get you a basket in crunch time because everyone that guards him is bigger/better athlete.

I do think he's a very good passer, too bad he's tiny.

I'd keep him as a reserve that gets 10-13 min a game. The defensive side is just such a struggle.

Not having Thelwell has been a killer.

I feel bad for these young men who were told they belonged playing D1 ball. They are now just cannon fodder for the ones that do. Told that by a guy who does not have the capacity to teach them the basics of defense and rebounding that can keep them from getting embarrassed while they are constantly overmatched at every position on the floor. Playing fast and launching up 3s is fun to watch and works against inferior competition, but is not a winning strategy in the B1G and against good teams. 15 years has at least taught us that.

Illinois had nothing to do with it. Payton has the worst shot selection you’ll see for someone who’s merely a slightly above average shooter.
well he can't get an open look on his own & the offense doesn't do well to get him open looks. He thinks he has to get his, so he throws up shitty shots.

Every team no matter who it is, drains their threes against us. Yes I know, lack of defense has a lot to do with but Illinois usually doesn't make too many of them. Tonight they are.
I felt they missed a ton of unguarded three-pointers not sure what their percentage was at the end of the game but some of those were as open as I've ever seen.

Bobby Hansen said they played him with 2 hands on his waist and never got a foul called.

You watch the Iowa offense without Freeman and everyone seems to be pushed further away from the basket. Mulvey, Dimbele, and Braun--none of these guys are paint scoring threats other than putbacks or layups. Braun looks to be the best of the bunch.

Without post threat, just put bodies on Dix and Sandfort and they can't handle physical play--both lack muscle and athleticsim. Dix is the guy that should be throwing up 20 shots instead of Payton---at least Dix hits the rim on all his shots.

The one positive is our rebounding and toughness in the post has improved---Braun, DImbele, Mulvey all give maximum effort. . KIngsbury is a good story for a Walkon to get PT on a terrible team.

If Fran sticks around, there is no hope for next year given the current talent, lack of guard talent coming in, and good chance we lose Dix and Freeman.

they went 9-29 from three... 31% Iowa 6-18 for 33%, they defended the three better than Iowa
