Stealing topic idea from PSU's forum, but which Iowa wrestler/Wrestlers are you most looking forward to watching this upcoming season? A few interesting storylines and new faces to the lineup, plus our returning studs.

125 - Thomas Gilman JR - 4th Place AA last year as a Sophomore, excited to see how much better he has gotten and if he can put himself into the finals this season.

133- Cory Clark JR - 2x AA, 5th as a frosh and Runner up last season. Word is Brewer will be staying at 133, so I will be highly anticipating that rematch in the finals. I think Clark can beat him, in their match Clark was taking a lot of bad shots without setups and Brewer made him pay for about 3-4 of them with counter TD's. When Clark actually set up his shot he scored. Plus he dominates people from the top position.. and the scoreboard doesn't always show it, but man is he a beast on top.

141- Brody Grothus SR - NCAA qualifier as a SO with some big wins over big names. Didn't win the starting spot last year at 149, lost it to FR AA Sorensen. Now willing to make the cut down to 141 for his SR campaign and to fill a big hole on the team. How will his body handle the cut? Will he be ready to go 100% by the start of the season? - As we all saw the pictures with his arm in a sling/brace. If Brody can hold the weight and stay healthy, I predict anywhere from Low-High AA finish for him, really need to see him wrestle at 141 first, but I feel pretty confident in picking him to AA here. Could be a much needed boost to our NCAA title hopes.

149- Brandon Sorensen SO - 4th Place AA as a Frosh. Looked pretty damned impressive last year, showed spurts of offensive prowess, but also grinded out a few low scoring affairs. Hope to see him open it up a bit more this year, and the sky is the limit. I predict a top 3 finish for Sorensen, but really hope for a finals appearance.

157- I expect we will see Cooper or Rhoads here, but there is HR talk of St. John challenging (I haven't been in the room at all, so I have no info on this). Honestly will be happy with an NCAA qualifier here, someone who will be competitive all season, and can score maybe 2.5-3 points at Nationals with maybe a win and 1 or 2 on the backside.

165- Burke Paddock FR- Interesting to see how the Frosh does down at a weight, as he competed at 174 all last season. He has some diverse offense with an arsenal of Greco throws, and hope to see a qualifier and similar contribution from him as 157. If he can get a few pins on the backside might contribute some much needed points, we need them wherever we can get them.

174- Alex Meyer JR- Really looking forward to Alex Meyer's official debut as a full time starter. He has the mentality we all love and think he will be right in the top 5 mix right away to start the season. I honestly think Meyer will score more pts than Evans ever did at NCAA's, although he couldn't beat him out for the spot.

184- Sammy Brooks JR- Rd of 12 last year in his first season as a full time starter. Hoping we get to have a full season of healthy offensive Sammy. I think the sky is the limit for him and he could easily find himself in the finals opposite Gabe Dean if all the cards fall right. My prediction is Top 5 for Sammy, I think he was a top 5 wrestler last season, but the way the bracket shook out, he lost to #1 and #4 place finisher while injured.

197- Nathan Burak SR- 2x AA, R12 as Freshman, 8th as SO, 7th as JR. Nathan has been steadily improving throughout his time here, and he looks like he took another step after this season when he blew his way through university nationals in impressive fashion. I think he is realistically a top 3 guy here this season, Snyder RSing, Gadson, Schiller Graduates. His only losses last year were to Gadson and McIntosh at NCAAs. I see a Cox-McIntosh final, but don't be surprised if Burak gets in there on sheer will power.

285- Sammy Stoll- Excited to see what the Frosh HWT can bring to the table. We all know he is an excellent Greco guy, and will likely score more than a few falls for us, his folkstyle results left a little to be desired last season, but there is always a learning curve with Hwt. I expect Sammy to qualify for NCAAs and score a few points for us, will be avidly watching as he progresses throughout the season, and could see him in AA contention. But for now temper my expectations and predict similar finish for him as 157/165, except maybe a few more points from falls. Between 157/165/285 I hope we can put together about 10 team pts.

As for who i am personally most excited to watch, it would have to be Gilman, Clark, Meyer, and Brooks. LOVE this JR class and they will still do great things. Also hoping to see Grothus and Burak go out on high notes to end their careers.

Meyer in the lineup every match for me. Gotta keep guys from scoring early (a trend with Iowa guys against quality opponents).

If Brody can maintain 141 then he's the guy I'm most excited to watch. Partly because of curiosity and partly because of Internet hype. A lot of potential upside for the senior.

Just Gilman. I'm a fan of them all, but I think TG has a little evil in him and I enjoy that. I hope they all get evil this year, Clark and Brandon getnafterit...we all win.

Brody! Him being successful at 141 is the key to our national title hopes. No pressure

I'm excited to see Stoll, Meyer, paddock, and Ryan.

But I really can't wait to see Clark and Brooks absolutely destroy their opponents this year!

Still Cory Clark for me... Love his wide open, give no f**ks style. I think we see his game jump yet another level this year.

Does "give no f**ks style" mean diving at legs? I obviously hope he goes far this year but there are several others I'd rather watch. Diving at legs with zero setup drives me nuts.

Personally, I'm looking forward to Sammy and Brody if he gets a spot. I'm most curious about Stoll and Meyer.

Not even excited for football anymore, c'mon wrestling season!!

While I understand your point, it got him to Saturday night, no? So yes, I love his always trying to score mentality. AND the reason I think we'll see a jump in his game is because he does have things he's been working on tightening up. I wish more members of our team would go like Cory.

Digging for underhooks and pushing guys around isn't my cup of tea, so, to each their own I suppose.

I think Clark is easily our most entertaining wrestler to watch. He's proficient in all positions and is one of the most effective, versatile, and punishing riders we've had in quite some time. Furthermore, he almost never sits on a lead. He's almost constantly looking to score and/or get the fall. Love watching this kid. Yes, he'll occasionally dive in when he could have set up the shot more effectively, but 1) he still often scores and 2) it's hard to fault a kid for getting a little hasty in his shots because he wants to get after it and dominate.

As for which guy I'm looking most forward to seeing this season, I can think of a compelling reason for every one of them and I'm truly looking forward to seeing all of them reach their potential, but if I had to choose one guy, I'd say Grothus at 141. If he can make the weight and be effective, he puts us right in the national title hunt. Lots of question marks there, but he has potential to do lots of damage and score a lot of points at Nationals down at 141. Really hoping to see him make a disciplined, gradual cut and dominate at 141.

I actually feel sorry for Clark's opponents this upcoming season because of his vaunted arm bar. I think Clark will lead the team in pins and it won't be close.

Yeah I know what you mean. But there's also times that it's lost him matches, for example Gulibon. Diving for legs should be out of your system by high school. I guess as long as it all works out in the end he can do whoever the hell he wants. I just want to WIN. I just hope it doesn't cost him anymore big matches.

I'm far more concerned about the other guys "diving in on his legs", which he gives up far too easily, and a lot of those end badly for him. That said, I too love his take no prisoners attitude, and as he grows into the weight a little bit better presumably this year, he'll be hell on wheels. I do look for him to take a lot of folks to the woodshed.

The problem with his "vaunted arm bar", is most Ref's look at it more as the "potentially dangerous arm bar". He's got to learn to take that thing and run it before they stop him, or use it differently enough so they don't stop him so frequently with it. I do think he gets a raw deal with it more times than not, but you can't keep putting yourself in that position without getting something out of it. He gains some riding time and wearing them out a bit I suppose, but it's a disadvantage to him to get it and get stopped, then he has to deal with a restart. He either needs to work on "perfecting" it or find something else to pin people with. Love the aggression, but it's too often detrimental to his cause, IMO.

This...Remember tO$U when Jonny D'OrangeJulius got in on his legs quickly and stalled the rest of the match out...Other matches too. Cory Clark is the sh*t but like a few other guys, needs to stop the early scoring.

Sorensen... Watching him hold on for the win against Tshirt last year was NUTS but the loss the second time around was predictable. I can't wait to see what he can become in time.

I'm most excited to see Grothus. I don't anticipate he'll be our most successful wrestler, but he has certainly generated the most post/pre-season drama on this board that I'm sure we're all brimming with anticipation what weight class he'll be at. Many have stated that our teams title hopes could possibly lie Brody's hands.

I'm most excited about the guys who didn't score any or many points are NCAA's but maybe have a great upside. So while I'm expecting lots of points from Gilman, Clark, etc, the guys who I'm really excited to see are:

  • Grothus
  • Meyer
  • Brooks
I tried to distinguish 1,2 & 3 among these guys, but they each have their own unique reason for thinking they could have great success, so it's a toss-up.

Watching Stoll break his HS pin streak (at least the beginning of the streak, he can finish it next year).

+1, but I am most interested in the most unpredictable results first, so

1. Grothus
2. Meyer (just because we haven't seen him as the starter as much and 174 emptied out).
3. Brooks

I'm more interested in seeing guys on the stage for the first time: maybe Paddock, and Stoll. Previoulsy, I would have added Cooper to the list, but the lack of chatter about him makes me think he's not lighting the room on fire, especially if younger St. John is pushing him.

I am always most excited to see the true freshmen with their first college competition and then first time varsity starters to see what they've got. Number one on the list is Kemmerer. And of course, Marinelli after that.
