133- Hall is real tough. Still would like to see a TD. Great job on top. A-
141- Ryan shows he's game. Did better on bottom. Needs to work on finishing when he's on the legs. C
149- Great 3rd period. Could have wrestled that way the whole match. A
157- Needs to stay in a better stance. Loved how hard he's working out there and gas tank looked good. Would like to see him get a few TD's that match. Cooper claims 157 in my eyes. B
165- hard worker. Wrestled a tough kid. Needs to stay in better position, finish his shots. Don't think Rhoads has won the spot just yet. B-
174- Wrestled hard start to finish against a good wrestler. Like seeing Meyer go hard in the 1st. A
184- That toss was scary. Rest of match all Brooks. A
197- Liked seeing him go after it. He has the offense, just needs to use it. A
285- WOW! Multiple attacks. Looked great. A+
125- Gilman being Gilman. A

Good meet. Was looking to see more from 41,57,65. I think we saw improvement from all of them since OSU and that's all I can ask for. Still need to keep working. Go Hawks!

Pretty much agree, ed. Ryan gets after it, and you have to respect that. Hoping he improves as the season progresses and he gets more experience. Was nice to see Cooper with a solid win. He faced another opponent who gassed early, but he wrestled smarter and his tank looked good. Rhoads is a gamer and competes hard. I liked the way he kept after Weatherman and made it close with a couple of TD's of his own. As for our fourth question mark weight, 285, Stoll is fun to watch. He's big and strong enough to hold his own against the top guys. I think he has a shot at the podium this year if he keeps improving.

Yes, we're undermanned at 141, 157, and 165, but those kids are at least getting after it. Hoping they keep their noses to the grindstone and can add something to our point total at Nationals. I like their fight. The rest of the lineup is looking pretty salty. We'll be a force to reckon with by March.

One big difference I have noticed from last year...we are wrestling much more looser than we were at any time last year. Fat Sammy Stoll is my man of the match...I have no problem seeing him being a top tier guy. Has been aggressive in all of his matches....always looking to pin.

133: Dangerous opponent. Got caught early. Recovered well. Top wrestling was the difference. Was 10 seconds from a MD. A.
141: Effort was fine, but talent simply isn't there. Praying for Grothus. No grade.
149: Got better as match went on. MD vs. quality opponent. A.
157: As long as he keeps getting opponents who can't stand up after the first period he'll do fine. B-.
165: Good hustle but slow feet, just doesn't have the talent we need here. A for effort, B- for performance.
174: Nice, solid match against solid opponent. 10 seconds from a MD. A.
184: Tough but sloppy against mediocre opponent. A for the pin.
197: 10 seconds from a TF against mediocre opponent. A-.
285: Coming along. A for the pin.

Stoll wrestled great. I like how he remained aggressive even after almost going to his back in the first. Gibbons enjoyed the match too as he was laughing for the last 30 seconds of the first period.

I would like to give ISU one giant F. What in the hell was that? No gas tanks. Very poor game plans. Why did they extend KJ???

If the cyclowns had worn different colored singlets, I would have assumed the Hawks were wrestling a d3 school. It doesn't matter how good their current recruiting class is, they are going to continue to suck under KJ.

Thoughts, Queso?

That was some quality stuff, Tarp! Glad I wasn't drinking anything at the moment I read that. It surely would have been splattered all over my keyboard.

I think your right. I don't think he's the one getting the recruiting done either. I think they'd see more success with those other two coaches that kind of look alike.

Wonder if Buf will join the convo soon. Larson, Hall, Moreno, Weatherman and Weatherspoon have all appeared to regress. They have no problem firing the football coaches, maybe wrestling has a lower standard these days.

Or maybe they are still blaming Cael for taking David Taylor and Matt Brown with him.

Though I also thought Tarp was unusually kind I think your grades are on the other extreme. Patrick Rhoads takes Weatherman to the wire and you give him a D? That's a round of 12 NCAA guy against a 5th year senior walk on with about 5 varsity matches to his credit.

I think giving Meyer an A (or even an A-) is a bit generous. He scored a takedown early then built up 3:30 of riding time before he scored again. That's a huge waste of time and energy in my opinion. I get that Weatherspoon is a tough wrestler, and this is a quality win for Meyer. However, with a little different strategy (one that doesn't waste so much time on top), he gets the major easily. Again, it's just the opinion of one fan.

I like these grades. It's too early in the season to be handing out A's like candy. Give the Hawks something to work towards. Solid performance against an inferior team.

I don't like being critical of instate teams, but isu is not a good team. It was a jv, varsity or a d1, d3 type of matchup. This so much different from the 2 meet home & away dogfight that I grew up watching. I guess I should be happy that we are the ones whooping ass & but jeez this dual almost isn't fun anymore!!

Gilman B
Clark B-
Ryan C He took some nice full shots this match which was a nice change from Maryland
BS B
Coop B-
Rhoads B He would have won that match had his guy gassed like 33,41,49, or 57.
AM B
Brooks A
Burak B+
Stoll A

Stoll finally gives us an entertaining Hwt. We haven't had one that was fun to watch since Danimal. The guys wrestled hard and are in fabulous shape.

I agree. It wasn't worth spending $10 for cyclone.tv so I just followed on twitter.

It's worth noting that Boston, Downey, and Harrington didn't wrestle. If they had I believe Gilman, Brooks, and Burak only get decisions. Which on the stat sheet would have made the dual look more competitive and the dual more exciting for fans.

Gilman:B+
Clark: B
Ryan: C-
Sorensen: B+
Cooper: C-
Rhoads: C-
Meyer: B-
Brooks: A-
Burak: B+
Stoll: B+

Clowns: FF

Sorry cyclone fans but that was a pathetic performance for a division 1 team that is suppose to be up for a rival team. Pollard does not care all that much about wrestling which is sad!!

I've been a bit negative lately, so I let a little grade inflation creep into my post.

It is also worth noting that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy weren't in their lineup, either. All 3 have attended the same number of classes at ISU as Downey though I suspect any of the 3 wouldn't require so much time to get an AA degree. And Boston would have been similarly schooled by Gilman assuming he could actually make weight.

Just saying they didn't have there best team out there and that's why they looked really bad tonight. Would have looked better but still bad with those guys in. Guess I should expect DB comments like this coming from you. You sure do like to put down college kids.

How can you say "their best team" when it involves a guy who isn't even on their team? That is simply illogical.

It wasn't our best team, either. But at least that's because of a guy who actually attends Iowa and is on the wrestling team. Because of that, if the dual is wrestled again with all combatants in the lineup the result might actually be worse.

And we could have had Grothus at 141 and I guarantee you would have seen a pin for the Hawks. We also could have bumped Sorensen to 57 and had Kemdog at 49. The score would have been even worse. This is fun.

fyi: Downie tweeted out that he's got something for us when it counts.

Wait. What?? EB transferring?? Thought he was still working his way down to 165 (or was it 157 - or 141)?? That is a bit of a blow for us. Can anybody confirm that EB is transferring??

Pat Downey: "I got something for these boys in March when it count."

"I'm winning a National title @ 184 lbs & I don't want u 2 believe me"

Good, I don't believe you. LOL. Brooks by a lot.
This, alone, tells me Downey is an absolute idiot! It's got nothing to do with being confident. It's blowing smoke when you haven't yet accomplished a damn thing.
Son... get eligible and we'll see what you got!

It's always been well documenteted that Downey is a class A idiot. 4 high schools in 4 years. This is his 3rd college that I'm aware of after a stint at the otc. He's got work to do and lbs to shed if he wants to wrestle in Jan. Well see I guess.

This.

But, all that said, I would like to see the kid in an ISU uniform and eventually an ISU degree. He's had a history of problems and you always want to see a kid straighten it out.

I will predict today... if he ever wrestles Sammy... Brooks will stick him by the 3rd period.
