JuJu Watkins (in 38 games) is 4th fastest to 1,000 points. Took Caitlin 40 games

Call me crazy, but it’s my opinion that in about 15 months or so, a bunch of people will be shaking their heads that they ever thought JuJu would catch CC.

CC’s productivity just went off the charts her final two seasons, the two seasons she played the most games. For cripes sake she averaged nearly 32 a game her senior year over 39 games! That’s a big number to try and stay ahead of.

I just think if JuJu is going to match that production, those points are going to have to come from some of her other teammates. With CC, they came from nowhere. She didn’t take them from anyone else; she just created them. If CC scored 30 instead of 40, it just meant that Iowa ended up scoring 10 fewer points that night. It’s not like they showed up in someone else’s box score, for the most part.

Let’s say that JuJu ends up needing to average 30+ over 39 freaking games her senior season. How does the USC coach handle that? Where does she place that history chase relative to team goals and team chemistry? On a team with significantly more “name talent” than CC’s teams ever had?

Maybe they'll hire "Spoon" to coach her senior year.....

Lolol.. Can't believe were actually going to do a game to game comparison of points per game played for the next THREE years. A LOT is going to happen in the next couple of years. How about we wait until her senior year and take a look then......
Yet you open the thread.. so you’re curious enough.

I like sports so I’m going to track things I’m interested in. You can ignore things you aren’t interested in.

So more to the point was CC22 playing in the last 5 minutes of those games? Also pretty B1G difference in putting your foot on the throat of Wisconsin, (a rival we played two time most years) and playing against Elon. whatever in the Hell that is.......
Elon is a small college in North Carolina that my granddaughter goes to. Not a basketball power👍

And don't forget, without covid, Caitlin, for her career, would have over 4,100 points, over 1,200 assists and over 1,000 rebounds.

The math:

Caitlin lost 6 games her freshman year (covid shortened season) & 2 games her sophomore year (3 games were canceled because of covid but 1 game was added last second).

FR year averages: 26.6 pts, 8.9 FGM, 3.9 three pters, 7.1 assts, 5.9 rebs

SO year averages: 27.0 pts, 8.9 FGM, 2.8 three pters, 8 assts, 8 rebs

The first number below is her final career stat. The number under that, in red, would be if she had played those 6 games lost her freshmen year and 2 games lost her sophomore year.

Caitlin's Career Numbers (in 139 games):

3,951 points (#1 in D-I history)
160 pts lost FR yr
54 pts lost SO yr
............................
4,165 Points without covid

1,293 Field Goals (#1 in D-I history)
54 lost FR yr
18 lost SO yr
............................
1,365 Field Goals without covid

548 three-pointers (#1 in D-I history)
23 lost FR yr
6 lost SO yr
............................
577 three-pointers without covid

1,144 assists (#3 in D-I history; Suzie McConnell of Penn State is #1 at 1,307)
43 lost FR yr
16 lost SO yr
............................
1,203 assists without covid

990 rebounds
35 lost FR yr
16 lost SO yr
............................
1,041 rebounds without covid

Lolol.. Okay then. Like I'm the only one who doesn't see how old this is going to be doing this for the next 100 freakin games over almost three years. Oh, Juju got 38 last night, so that puts her here.. Cmon..

Exactly, and she's probably a better comp to CC22. The thing is there will always be the next star, whether Juju gets the record or not. Are we going to spend 3+ years breaking down each game stats of the next player, and the next, and the next? Maybe wait until someone closes in on 3000pts with a year to go before we start the CC's record countdown to 4000.....

Regarding CC missing games (COVID), she also missed games due to Iowa shitting the bed against Creighton in the second round of the 2022 NCAA tournament. But, then in her final two seasons she played the maximum number of games, which made up for some of the missed games. JuJu will not only have to keep her points average way up, but USC will also have to make Big Ten finals and NCAA final fours.

CC scored a ridiculous 2289 points in her final two seasons. That'll be tough for anyone to match.

Any coach wanting to advance the team to the F4 would need to learn how to feed a team loaded with consensus Top25 McDonald’s All-Americans. A couple of USC’s ‘24 5star recruits were record setting scorers themselves. A team championship is the higher goal.

In my opinion, it’s as simple as this: Juju either accepts a more limited shooting role or she leaves.

This would comport with my standing prediction that the next player to break CC’s scoring record will play for a mid-major or smaller Division 1 school.

Yep. CC was surrounded by tremendous role players who thrived off her ability to create, yet had no ego and generally averaged about 10 ppg or less. Even Monika was below 15 I believe.

JuJu is in an entirely different situation. She’s averaging about 3-ish apg per game. And is surrounded by blue chip teammates. Unless she completely transforms herself as a distributor while simultaneously ramping up her own scoring output, I agree her only shot at catching CC is for her to change her environment.

Kind of my point. Why was she playing in the last 5 minutes i tat game up 50+ points...
Caitlin had some games where she was in later than she probably should have been, but she stated at least once that she knew people might be coming from a long distance to watch her play so she wanted to keep playing. USC had 4,800 fans at the Elon game, so that wasn't it.

Bottom line is that it will come down to 2 numbers: career games played x career ppg.

(1) Caitlin averaged 35 games/year x 4 years. JuJu played 34 games in year 1.
(2) Right now there's quite the gap in career ppg.

Current Numbers:

Games....Career...........Career
Played.......PPG.............Points
........45................26.49.....................1,192..........JuJu Watkins
.....139...............28.42...................3,951..........Caitlin Clark

USC needs to higher S. Swoops as their coach. She would make sure she play every minute so she can break CC records.

Clark had 4 points in the first quarter of her 47th game. Juju should easily pass that Saturday vs UConn..
Good for you. Just spend the next two and a half years being a dumb ass, and then when she doesn't break the record you can do the same thing for the next ten years for the next three stars that come along..

“Being a dumbass” is kind of harsh. You can continue to be all over this thread while not caring about it at all.

I have a passing interest in juju, but she is years from competing directly against CC for points total and then the W. So I’m curious to see where she is at at milestones, but I have no interest in tracking things game by game. So I might dip into this thread once a month or so.

I don’t think sharing that they have the same amount of points in the same amount of games is a crazy post for this thread.

It was the second time I made a post in this thread. You don’t have an interest in a particular post that is on topic, skim it and move on to the next post.

Kc decided to rib me about tracking it, so I made a joke about her having 4 in her next quarter. That joke hurt them enough to say I was being a dumbass.

I will likely share another comparison at some point if I find it interesting. Hope that’s ok with the people who read this post.

I’m not criticizing you. I am just stating my own interest. Variety makes the world go around.

People on a fan site on the internet are doing fanatical things. Who cares. If you don’t want to read it, skip over it.

I have found the whole JuJu thing interesting because of the nonstop comparisons to Caitlin that started last season.

When JuJu scored 50 in game last season, in the postgame the TV announcers said, "Caitlin, who?" JuJu quickly dismissed that nonsense.

And ESPN clearly is tracking the milestones; they were quick to point out that it took JuJu 2 fewer games than CC to reach 1,000 points.

I will probably take more notice when a few things happen:

(1) when she goes off for some crazy scoring #

(2) when the season ends, to see what her games played x career ppg are. If they are, for example, 70 career games x 28 ppg, then I might be a bit nervous but her career ppg are trending downward so far this season.

(3) when she hits 2,000 career points
