Keegan Cryptic Message?

If he came back, he’d likely need a massive insurance policy, for which we could crowd fund the premium through NIL.

Iowa fans could also scratch together, collectively; $8m in NIL for the brothers.

This is the problem with Iowa athletics in general. Catch lightening in a bottle once in awhile for short bursts but the top to bottom talent is never enough to sustain it
Two national player of the year candidates in two years, one winner, and we still manage to have 19 losses over that time?!?! How the hell does that happen?!

Hard to pass up the money but seems like a kid that would return. I'll chip for 10 mil NIL deal! Who's with me?
Really all we need to do is pony up a 2 million dollar insurance policy that would pay him 40 million if he has a career ending injury..

A season of achievements and family and a young team, but a painful loss today, an early exit, and SO much remaining left to prove.

the negativity and blame projecting on this board is pathetic. We should be understanding and grateful. Those in the Hawkeye family, that is.

Keegan wasn’t getting very much respect today from any of the announcers. I remember one of them saying he’s like Paul pierce but “lacks the athleticism“. that statement really pissed me off. But then again, today only, there maybe was somewhat of a lack of athleticism, passion, intensity, and the kind of killer instinct that makes Kobe and Jordan and LeBron so great. And why each of those legendary players left a forever legacy at the programs which they turned around into world champions.

Keegan could and should do what is best for him, and he could decide that’s cashing out and leaving town as soon as possible…

…or he could decide that the legacy he wants to leave is not only about the money.

He’s only a sophomore and he still has a lot to prove, didn’t get as much respect as he probably deserved this year even though he’s still very young, and there are a lot of arguments for why he would want to stay one more year.

After the big 10 championship he talked about taking the Iowa program to a new level, and definitely the championship was an indication of what it could be like, but he and his family cannot look in the mirror and say that he and his team have raised the program to a new level yet unless and until they go deep into the NCAA tournament.

Iowa has won the Big Ten tournament twice before, and embarrassingly squandered opportunities in the NCAA tournament, so in essence, as a program, they are back to square one.

They haven’t proven a single thing in March madness since the 90s, the era when Kenyon Murray was on the court. And I don’t even think the team that Kenyon was on achieved nearly its full potential. How could it? Certainly the loss of Chris Street was tragic and colossal in so many ways. He died in January of his junior year and it tore the heart right out of that team in the middle of its season, And he didn’t even have a senior year. Even still, with just 2.5 seasons to play, Street held records for decades.

For whatever reason, Keegan and Kris collectively had one of if not the worst game all year, and each of them has to decide whether this is how they want to go out, or if they want to truly be able to say for the rest of their lives that they’ve taken this program to an entirely new level.

I’ve heard them say publicly several times that their ultimate goal is exactly that.

The only possible risk is a career ending injury, which is exceedingly rare, but the upside is significantly improving draft stock and exposure and recognition individually, as well as their legacy. The benefits of staying can outweigh the costs even monetarily, but the benefits that are beyond money are invaluable and so much more enduring than a big payout.

everything depends on how they and their family want to see themselves in the future. Will Keegan or Kris be like LeBron and “take their talents to Miami“? (No they wouldn’t be so dramatic and ungrateful, that’s for sure. They have so much more class and humility, but they could leave early.)

Or will they be like Chris Street as a person and player, continue his passion and commitment, a young man who was forced to “leave early”, and choose the uncommon and unexpected path and take this family-focused program to an entirely new level, and leave a legacy every minute of their amazing lives?

So much potential. So much left to prove.

So grateful and respectful of the entire Murray family. Hawkeyes forever. Amazing people.

We should support them whatever they decide though. Nothing but admiration for them.

I don't think he returns but I think despite decent stats today, this loss will probably hurt his draft stock at least a little. Could fall out of the top 10, maybe out of the top 15.
You do not know the NBA. They do not draft on performance, they draft on upside potential and Murray has a very high ceiling. Do you think Ivey is a sure fire Top Five pick on his performance? Hell no, but his ceiling is lofty.

Difference in K.M. and Garza is 50 million for four years - is what I’m hearing.

start the go fund me...I'll do a few hundred bucks....too bad I blew my NCAA picks betting on Iowa to final-4, so I won't have any winnings there for NIL.

Keegan...incredible player...he did his best...Keegan and Kris were the heart of the team.

To all those that said CMAC was a stud even if he didn't make shots....my answer.....no...you gotta makes shots or you get beat by a Richmond.

During the post game press conference, while answering a question from the media, Keegan responded:

"I think for us, it's really just on next year, go through the off-season again, get better. We put a stamp on this program, uh, I feel like positively, um so, go in the off season and work"

Read into that what you want, but I think he just possibly announced his return to the team next season!
Yeah, I don't want to even dream about it but some of the things he was saying postgame during the B10 tournament made me go Hmm.

Serious question though, and I'm just playing devil's advocate here and not trying to be a smartass: how many likely nba draft picks have returned to college and suffered a career-ending injury? I get it with football, but has that happened a lot in basketball?

As much as we want Keegan to play another year...His Dad is no fool. At 22 years old this year...and being on every single Top 10 draft board you do not risk injury and literally throwing away $10+ million and generational wealth that you only get 1 shot at in life to play another season in Iowa city.

Would be completely irrational.

Think Chet Holmgren or Ivey at Purdue will be coming back and look at some NIL deal? Heck no.

Let's just take a step back and think about it. Become a Top 10 lottery pick and play in NBA making enough money that your kids kids will never have to worry again....or get a historic $1 mil NIL deal for a year to play in Iowa city...risking injury...and having to do promotions for the Wig and Pen all year?
The only caveat to this is the fact his brother will be playing one more season . Perhaps that family bond is reason enough? Not saying I would do it, but maybe for him he enjoys the college experience enough to give it one more go?
(FWIW. I think he’s gone)

The most likely injury if he comes back is draft stock. Just saying 🤷🏻‍♂️

Everyone saying he would be foolish to come back next year, just curious if you can point out any player that has ever come back to play basketball and ruined their NBA career because of it.

Maybe do better than 2-10 FG combined.
Yeah, 2 for 10.....at least CMAC plays better defense

Worst thing that happened for Iowa's Ncaa chances was Fran seeing two late 3pt baskets and a 3pt bank shot from JBO in the indiana game....validated his strategy to himself and the media/faithful which got unvalidated today.

Same with CMAC...he got on a hot streak that his career percentage said had to end. No made 3pt'ers last few games.

Both those guys had to get this team ready to play...collectively none of them were ready.

It seems Frans offense emphasizes his star player. Maybe elevating them into what they are not.

Gatens
Marble
Utoff
Jok
Garza
Murray

I thought there was no chance, but after today idk. Nothing to do with the way he played, he’ll be a high draft pick, just don’t know if he wants to go out as a Hawk like this
I can think of a few million reasons to not give 2 shits about how he goes out as a hawk.

Me too, I'm in.

I've had 23 years of end of year disappointments plus gazillion other disappointments following Iowa basketball over more years then I can count. I'm battle hardened.
I think he's coming back to play for 1 more year with his brother Kris and then they can both be lottery picks after they along with the other returning players lead Iowa past the round of 16 and beyond despite Fran still coaching at Iowa.
Blood is always thicker then......

that does not make up for missing $8million payday next year.

I am all for crowdfunding...if Kentucky is giving
their stud $4 million or whatever, IOwa fans are good for similar through right funding vehicle.

That said, the ncaa is heading towards a model where universities with Billionaire sponsors will be the
winners.....Oregon and Nike/Phil Knight already do very well.

Where is Kris going?
The G-League is a very viable route to the NBA and it's time Iowa fans stop looking down at it. Roughly half of the players on NBA rosters spent some time in the G-League. Kris could make more money, not have to go to school, and spend more time developing his game for the NBA.

I have no problem at all with the G League but I don't expect Kris will be taking that route and few underclassmen do.
