Kueter

Question? If Kueter wrestles this school year, but does not play football...is he then a sophomore for both sports next year...or could be a sophomore related to wrestling and still a freshman as it relates to FB?

Now then...assuming that we will see no more of Cassioppi, darn it, I hope we do see our next best option at HWT, which would seem likely to be Kueter.

Good question. I would assume he would burn his freshman year for both sports, but I really have no idea. Not alot of this has ever happened. Having different eligibilty left in different sports would be very hard to keep track of imo so I don't see it working out that way!?

If he wrestles this year he would still have a redshirt, but would be considered a sophomore next season.
If he doesn't play football this year he would have used his redshirt year and would be a freshman next season.

I believe it goes per sport. Meaning, he would be a RSF in Football and True Soph in Wrestling next season. He would still be able to use a redshirt for wrestling if he goes this year.

I believe those above are correct. Can’t remember what the players name was, but he played basketball for Duke using up that eligibility. Then transferred to Syracuse and played 1 year of football as the QB for them. If I remember correctly, Iowa actually played Syracuse the year he was qb, making a couple goal line stops for the W.
Im just super excited to likely see Kueter on the mat for the hawks!

Yep, that would be my take. Also means they don't plan on any of the appeals changing anything which is a real bummer for Brands, Assad, and Cass. They are all going to be done with their college careers unfortunately.

Assuming a one year suspension...not for Assad. He has another year left after the current one. He's a year behind Nelson and Cass.

No. This is is it for Assad (same as Brooks):

2020 (1)
2021 (Free)
2022 (2)
2023 (3)
2024 (4)

I mean, I’m excited to see Kueter go but after he’s acclimated to his heavier weight and heavyweight clears and he’s got a year under his belt.
This isn’t ideal, but that notion seems to be the culture forming around the program.

Weight gain while practicing and playing football at a high level in season is not common. I’m wondering if the plan isn’t more to punt this year of football and get a head start on the mass goal.

Seth Wallace just told us his plan

look no further than Connor McCaffrey.

He was on basketball scholarship and able to come back for his Covid year in Basketball only, not baseball. I think this is because you don't get 5 years to play four in the secondary sport. I could have misheard/misunderstood it around end of basketball, start of baseball season when it was talked about.

If Ben has the football success he hopes for, eligibility probably is not an issue. Most elite NFL prospects don't hang around after year three, and almost never after year 4.
Sean Clifford hung around for 7 years but he wasn't exactly an elite prospect.

If you’re not playing in the games, in-season football practice isn’t all that intense. He could easily be putting on weight.

Didn't Mocco use up eligibility in wrestling and then go out for football for last year?

Exactly. He was just posting a generalized observation of football players. Like saying grass is green

Have you ever seen the mass change iowa fb players hsve between their true fresh and rs fresh years?

College[edit]

Iowa[edit]

Mocco arrived to University of Iowa as a true freshman in the 2001–2002 season. In his first year of competition, he earned runner-up honors at the 2002 NCAA's and Big Ten's and in his sophomore year he became the undefeated champion at the 2003 NCAA's and Big Ten's.[3]

Oklahoma State[edit]

The next season (2003-2004), he took an Olympic redshirt to focus on training for the 2004 Summer Olympics (see section below).

After the Olympic redshirt and successful seasons at Iowa, he decided to transfer to their bitter rivals, Oklahoma State University.

In his first season competing as a Cowboy, he won the Big 12 Conference championship, the NCAA championship, and the Dan Hodge Trophy as the best collegiate wrestler in the country.

In his last season (2005-2006), he again won the Big 12 Conference championship but lost in the finals of the NCAA championships. He graduated with a 137–6 record.[4]

In August 2006, with one year of college eligibility left, Mocco joined the Oklahoma State football team. As a senior defensive lineman, he played in five games for the Cowboys and was credited with two total tackles, one solo, according to the university's athletic web site.[5]

In 2019, Mocco was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.[6]

I'd personally rather see him focus 100% on wrestling bc I think our wrestling team needs him more then football will. I'm a big fan of his, especially his wrestling. That said, if he hits the mat at 240-245 this year he's going to get manhandled imo.

Didn’t Conner give up baseball a few years ago? I don’t remember him playing recently.

Well he doesn't have huge expectations for football THIS year.

The only way he sees the field when it counts would be special teams.

Exactly my point. I wouldn’t expect him to be playing — at least at his highest level - if he’s prioritizing mass gain.

Assad redshirted in 2021. Still has the additional Covid year just like everyone else.

He did. Mocco's situation is like the aforementioned Duke/Syracuse QB where they took advantage of another year to play a different sport. That doesn't apply to Ben Kueter. His 5 year clock is ticking and a redshirt can be taken in either sport. He doesn't get to/need to tack anything on.

Yup. you're right. but it don't matter. he gone.

Times have changed. Freshmen come in ready to go. Before Spencer when did Iowa put in a true freshman? Mocco? McIlravy?

With his length, I don't see more than a couple of the better Hwts "manhandling" him at 245#.
Yes, he'll struggle with GS, Kerk, and the Air Force guy.

But I would think we still don't see him before 1-10-24.
He's very talented

He was only 213 earlier this summer. To be 245 by wrestling season while exercising hard would be very difficult for a young guy with a high metabolism. How much of this gain would be muscle versus fat in such a short time?

Don’t forget about Shultz, huge heavyweight who was runner up 2 yrs ago. He needs to study how Snieder did it. I believe he said he always attacked knees at angle to put stress on them against the way the joint bends, same theory as submission holds. If they fight it hard, joint may be seriously injured, they they would give up the take down to avoid injury. It takes speed to do this, which he has.

Clifford couldn’t have been to bad of a prospect considering he was drafted and make the Packers roster.

In fact he go some time in at the end of the game Sunday.

Has Gable committed to wrestling this year, not being a wiseguy. I do miss some announcements.
I agree, I think Ben will be fine with most other than than the wrestlers you mentioned.
Kerk and AF guy could get ugly though I think. Obviously Gable would abuse him like he does everyone.
What's your opinion @MitchLL on how he would do against Kerk and AF guy?
I think they would tech him. No shame in that. They would be monsters against a true , undersized, freshman.
Jmo
Funny you called him AF guy. I can't remember his name either. Lol

Dayton Pitzer was undersized last year and he had success as a true freshman. Might have been an AA, but he got dinged up a bit and I’m glad Pitt used his redshirt.
