Mike Evans

Of all the Hawkeyes of the last few years, he's the guy I'd most like coaching my kid. I also liked his family who we chatted with on this board. He is a tough warrior who doesn't take anything from anybody. Maybe he didn't live up to his or someone's expectations, but I'm glad he's back in the room, and I wish him the very best.

yeah i'd say the kid we got was better than kokesh , storley, brown and perry.

Don't know about a foot injury, but I do know the summer of his senior year he injured his knee during one of the camps. Don't know the severity, but i can imagine it was something that stuck with him all year, or at least prevented him from preparing for the season.

I loved his attitude, always seemed pissed off. However, there was something about his wrestling that just didn't do it for me. IDK, maybe it was the lack of offense. I wonder if he was burned out in college, happens a lot.

Saw Mike at Luther College wrestling camp the summer before his senior year. He was awesome at explaining technique. Then walked around and literally got down with multiple kids and showed them and their partner a hands on feeling of that technique. He was very personable with all the coaches. I and my coaching staff were blown away from that camp seeing a totally different Mike Evans then what I saw on the mat. The guy will make a great coach! And great is an understatement. Welcome back Mike.

Great feedback. I sometimes get the feeling we are being sandbagged (better than getting teabagged) by our guys. We see the media face which is "attack, score points, eat red meat" monotoned version of our guys when it wouldn't really shock me to find out Mike is a cello enthusiast with a growing wine collection (ok, it would but you get the point).

This was one of Spencer's main points...instead of finding IRobot when he got to Iowa, it was a family like culture. Similarly, even when Daniel Dennis describes getting his ass chewed by Tom, it is funny as hell. Look at Mike, Dennis, Ramos, Gilman, Stoll and you have some real personalities. Hell, Brooks's ode to his mullet after winning B1G is stuff of legends.

And this is one of the reasons I think Spencer (and Gavin, for that matter) is going to pay massive dividends in recruiting. Both Lee and Teasdale are pretty vocal about how much they love the Iowa coaches and the "family" feel of the program. Especially considering that they're from "wrestling fun central", PA, I think these two studs will do a lot to help dispel the myths about our coaches and the culture of our program that other coaches like to perpetuate in their negative recruiting.

I love that Lee called out the coaches negatively recruiting against us. He didn't mention names but Tom Ryan and Cael will have to take note that not all recruits will believe their bullshit

Lee specifically said how hard Cael tried to get him and how much he liked Cael. I do not think he was referring to Cael when he spoke of negative recruiting. Maybe he was, but I did not get that impression.

I am not so sure Ryan is a big negative recruiter either. He may have said a thing or two in the past, but I think he has cleaned that up a bit.

I wasn't talking about Cael in this particular instance(I don't know if he did or didn't) and Tom Ryan has been one of the worst. Also, there are many reasons why a recruit wouldn't say something about the home state coaches.

Even if Evans was a 1 time AA, the more young guys like him we can get in the room, the better. Free coaching. Plus, you don't have to be a perfect wrestler to be a good coach. I think it's awesome. Would love for Iowa to make a lot of these guys administrative assistants like Minny does. The more guys in the room the better.

It is great to have Evans back in Iowa City. I loved his toughness it just happened that his weight class was one of the toughest all the years he was here. He had Perry pinned but in Okl City it is hard to get the call. If he can just rub some of his toughness to the new kids will be great. Sometimes good wrestlers make a better coach than the superior ones have seen that many times in my long life.
