Mizzou v Drake game tonight 6:30pm

Holy shnickies! Drake controlled that game from start to finish. Didn't show a shred of panic when Mizzou made the late run. A bunch of Div-II guys playing on the biggest stage of their lives against a team chock-full of players with P-5 and NCAA Tourney experience.

I am pretty confident that BG already has McCollum essentially in the bag, and I sure hope I'm right. He would make a world of difference for Hawkeye basketball, and the donors would no doubt get behind him as far as NIL $ goes. He needs to bring that Jason Kidd-looking #14 with him, too. Wow!

So...taking a quick look at Drake's roster. Some of the guys he brought with him have eligibility left. Two others with significant playing time do as well.

Banks -Jr
Stirtz- Jr
Manyawu- Soph
Combs - Soph
Jackson and Mascari are grads, they're gone.

Does that mean he's less likely to take the Iowa job as he wants to stay with them? OR...is it a Curt Cignetti situation where we hire him and they all follow?

The drake offense reminds me of that group of over the hill guys playing picking up ball, who exploit every misstep/bad spacing on the opposition. Just dudes cutting to the hoop out of nowhere for layups. Quite entertaining to watch.

And for good measure they shot free throws like 8 year olds or whichever age implements free throws.

Go the Drake!

Imagine that. REAL basketball comes back, via Iowa City. That's a f***ing wet dream right there.

Whatever. It. Takes.

If it means bringing players he's already won 31 (at least!) of his first 34+ D1 games with, so be it! In fact, it should probably be highly encouraged.

And that FR with the hammer dunks

If you don't like the idea of Ben McCollum as the next Iowa head coach, I don't know what to say.

Other than the 50% at the FT line, there was nothing his team did that damaged its chances at winning this game.

Sure they stumbled slightly when Mizzou made that run to cut the lead down to 2 with around 5 minutes left, but they got right up off the mat and started landing haymakers and finished it out.

By comparison, a normal Fran-led Iowa team? Folds like a chair and loses that game by double-digits after leading for most of it up to that point.

I'd be more worried about Drake losing to UNC- Wilmington. Why? B/c another mid major that just upset a high ranked team and then they are just brimming with confidence with no worries at all. They just shocked the tourney

None of them, coach or players, are going to stay at Drake if given the opportunity to get a huge pay raise.

Just think what Ben could do with Josh Pryce and Cooper
I’m at the point that I don’t want any of the old players back, unless BM wants them. There isn’t a single player on Iowa’s team that played anywhere close to as hard and as tough as Drake played. I want a team of hard nosed ass kickers. I’m done with finesse players.

Drake makes Iowa look so unathletic as a bball team. It’s mind boggling how bad Iowa really is and fans think it’s a mistake to let Fran go. You’ve got to be kidding me.
I like Fran and think he’s a good coach, but he was never going to change. He was locked into a style and philosophy on and off the court and just never adapted. I suppose that is commendable but not always successful.

Exactly. A run was always coming. They weathered it and punched back.

The defense alone is impressive.

I haven't watched much of this year, but Texas Tech looks undisciplined so far tonight. Drake could take advantage of that.

In regards to being a defensive coach. Yes he is. But he has stated he would like to have faster paced offense, but he is coaching to his current roster.

Dude is basketball idiot savant.

But that's mostly coaching.

McCollum would take Dix and Koch in heart beat.

I wouldn’t even call him a “defensive coach”. It seems that way because we’ve lived in the desert for 15 years and any defense looks foreign to us. I’d call him an old school basketball coach….in the vein of Bob Knight, Bo Ryan, etc. that believe ALL parts of the game are equally important.

First that I have seen Drake this year, or a team coached by McCollum. Other than Stirtz and maybe the freshman (name?), not exactly a lot of raw talent, but damn, they sure play well as a team. Great help team defense and rebounding by committee. Coaching style is almost the exact opposite of Fran. I suspect that some fans today would find the pace boring, but winning basketball.

I sure wouldn't mind seeing a Stirtz and Dix backcourt, but that would take a LOT of if's and but's to make happen. Get Fran's recruits to still come to Iowa, the portal transfer from Miami, Dix, Pryce, Koch, and Dembele... McCollum would have a LOT more to work with than he currently has at Drake. Add a portal pg, or maybe Thelwell, and a true big that can guard the basket...

So, I'm in on McCollum.

A lot of solid points being made here.

I don't doubt his ability to recruit to Iowa. How he does that, I don't know. If I'm Beth, I'm begging BJ Armstrong to come back to IC for stint to be GM of NIL/Collective. No long term commitment.....but things going.

boom. do it. do it now.

Their 2 bigs are way better than Iowas.

Freeman is better offensively but overall those 2 are far better suited for what you need in college basketball.
