Another possibility could be Nick Nurse once he is let go by Philly. Iowa boy through and through that can coach.
Late 90s/early 00s but yeah. The true dark years.Holy shit......Kurt Kanaski sighting/interview. I had no idea that he was still in coaching.
For those of you that don''t remember...early 90's Drake coach. Horrible.
Yep. All the hand wringing from our fans that we’ll be able to compete with our NIL while Drake just handles Mizzou. Oh, they have a coach who actually coaches and demands players play defense? Without being paid big money to do it? Fran quit coaching years ago. No matter who we get we need a guy who actually cares.I thought NIL was the key to success!?!?
What's up Mizzou?
Hey Kansas!
Yeah, I was leaning that way before and now even more so after watching tonight’s game. Not sure if even John Wooden would be able to wipe Fran’s fingerprints off those guys…I do wish them well though…😎I’m at the point that I don’t want any of the old players back, unless BM wants them. There isn’t a single player on Iowa’s team that played anywhere close to as hard and as tough as Drake played. I want a team of hard nosed ass kickers. I’m done with finesse players.
‘Hoosiers II’ ? 😉I'm sorry, but anyone in Iowa should cheer for this team. Such a great story. I mean movie script story
Well if McCollum leaves he of course is taking them all.None of them, coach or players, are going to stay at Drake if given the opportunity to get a huge pay raise.
Great point.I wouldn’t even call him a “defensive coach”. It seems that way because we’ve lived in the desert for 15 years and any defense looks foreign to us. I’d call him an old school basketball coach….in the vein of Bob Knight, Bo Ryan, etc. that believe ALL parts of the game are equally important.
And only at 6-9 and 6-7. Playing Center. Drake gives you nothing easy ever. They make you work on every single possession and if you come down and jack it up quick you have to guard them for 30 seconds. Everyone now just wants to run up and down the court. Mizzou running around with 5 star Mark Mitchell from Duke and Drake holds him to 2-8. And it wasn’t a fluke.Their 2 bigs are way better than Iowas.
Freeman is better offensively but overall those 2 are far better suited for what you need in college basketball.
That was my point, there's no incentive for those players to choose to stay at Drake for next to nothing if BM leaves. They just go with him and also get a big pay increase.Well if McCollum leaves he of course is taking them all.
If he comes I can guarantee all his guys will start. No matter who else he brings in. He 100% believes in his system. And it takes awhile to figure out his defensive schemes. If any of our guys stick around it might take them an entire season to get rid of the bad habits they learned from Fran. That was my point, there's no incentive for those players to choose to stay at Drake for next to nothing if BM leaves. And he doesn't need to stay at Drake to continue to coach them. They'll just go together.
The either or hypothetical made no sense.

You have watched our current team play, correct?I don't know about a full season. But a preseason ass chewing.....yes.

I 100% agree. 4 D2 guys plus a juco guy and guy from Wyoming just held one of the best offensive teams in the country to 57 points. That’s all coaching.

It’s all dependent on game and opponent. For example, Bob Knight was often thought of as a defense first guy, but when he drew UNLV for the Final Four game in ‘87, he was quoted as saying he knew they couldn’t stop them defensively, so decided to beat them at their own game. They went out ran with them and scored 97 points and won.It is not an either or. You can play great defense and still have a fun offense to watch. He would certainly dive into the portal for a couple of one and dones.
Well he could but he’s not going to compromise for a 1 and done guy. He’ll either play D or sit the bench. It is not an either or. You can play great defense and still have a fun offense to watch. He would certainly dive into the portal for a couple of one and dones.

[/QThe Drake bigs understand their role and execute it very well, but you see a lot of raw talent? Same is true for almost all of the Drake players. Few teams in the B1G would even recruit them, but they have learned to play as a TEAM.Their 2 bigs are way better than Iowas.

If you were choosing a team from all of the Drake and Mizzou players after watching them practice, maybe 2 or 3 of them would be Drake players. I am not trying to demean the Drake players, because they have maximized their potential, which is often an unrecognized skill.

I've been following Drake all year, because I like defense and rebounding and winning. After whipping the SEC's Missouri yesterday, Drake--with its D-II roster, is a mere 31-3.Anyone else going to watch our future coach?
They’re pretty much the exact opposite of every team in the country. Mizzou had no idea what to do last night. They were used to every team in the SEC playing like them, running up and down the court and playing as fast as you can. Now you take a quick shot 5-10 seconds into the shot clock and miss and Drake walks the ball up the court and physically pounds you on offense for 30 seconds. They’re hard to play.Drake is the polar opposite of most of the Iowa teams under Fran. They play intense defense, block out, rebound on both ends, make the extra pass, set solid screens and drive the defender into them, back cut to the hoop and play much larger than their size.
Sign me up.
Great take. For those of you who didn’t pay close attention go watch the Drake bigs (Manyewu and Banks) defend the high pick and roll. Teams do that to Iowa 20 times a game and get switches and a layup or open 3. Not against Drake. Their big men not only hedge they push the ball handlers back a foot or 2 so they can’t come down hill. That also then allows them time to recover on their man. Now the offense has wasted 10 seconds just trying to set up a screen and roll. It happened time and again and Mizzou had no answer for it. Never figured it out.HoustonREDHawk said:

It depends on how you define talent.
Are defense and rebounding ability talent?
Part of the reason Drake is so good defensively is because they have bigs that can switch on to guards while still being effective paint defenders and clean the glass.
If Drake played Iowa they would kill them on the glass, with or without Freeman.
For bigs specifically, I don't think offensive skill is more important than defensive ability, rebounding and being able to finish above the rim.
If you made a starting 5 from both teams I'm only taking Dix from Iowa...maybe Thelwell if he's totally healthy. Any of the other Iowa players are going to be so much worse on defense that it's a net negative.
My brother and I are 45/46 now, and we were in 2nd/3rd grade when Iowa lost to UNLV. I bet we talk about that game at least once a year haha!Too soon.
