Neither Current #8 SMU, #10 Boise State nor #15 Arizona State (or #16 Iowa State) should be getting a 1st Round Bye in the CFP

I'm don't think any conference champs should get an automatic bye. The conference champs deserve a bid, then pick the 8 next best teams. Then you seed 1-12 just like the NCAA tournament.

The problem is (and will always be) the influence that ESPN + TV ratings will have on the committee.

I think the 12 teams are largely predetermined- exceptions exist when a team like Indiana emerges. Is a 10-1 Indiana beter than a 3 loss SEC team? Who the hell knows? Here is where bias and the influence of ESPN comes in.

One thing I wish would happen is for the NCAA to step in and demand that the SEC play 9 conference games, and eliminate their mid-November games vs Mercer + UTEP. It's another bye week for them, and now allows them to move up in the top 12 CFP rankings when other schools may suffer a conference loss. I know the NCAA has no teeth and this won't happen, but the playing field isn't level.

Head-to-head is the first criteria. ISU and Colorado haven't played any of the other 3.

BYU would be out by their loss to ASU (0-1)
ASU would be in (1-0) beat BYU

Second criteria: Record against common opponents.
Identical 5-2 for Colorado and the clones

Third criteria: Win % against the next highest common opponent. TTech is likely that team which would favor Colorado.

How bout KState just take care of business on Saturday and put this to rest.
Maybe just go with rock-paper-scissors.

Boise State almost won at Oregon. I think Boise State has gotten worse and Oregon has gotten better though. Oregon would dominate if they played again, IMO.

It’s funny how every fan of 7-5 programs in the BIG/Sec want to see teams like Boise State get killed though. Boise State is far more likeable than teams like Oregon/OSU.
I don’t want to see them killed, but rewarding them with a bye and 4 seed is stupid and the rules makers would be exposed as fools watching Ohio State embarrass a team that would likely have lost badly in an away game on someone’s campus in December if not for being the benefactors of playing in a bad league with a dumb set of rules for who gets first round byes.

I’m sure it will be changed in the near future. I don’t disagree with anything you are saying.

Just seems like sour grapes from some people. The rules, or lack thereof, have benefited teams like Ohio State for decades and there seems to be less frustration at that. If anything, rules will get adjusted to continue to benefit teams like them.

I think seeing fans diminish Iowa my whole life when they didn’t realize how much talent we had just has me trying not to do the same.

Or...lose 35-7. Right?
You know what. Enjoy it man.

I'm going to stop hammering on you all because at this point, it's just me being petty and mean. Your program is on the brink and it's not your fault that things are the way they are and you have to play in the current B12 format. It's bad long term and I'm sure deep down, you probably know that. I know what you all actually are in that conference, and you probably do too, so that's irrelevant.

I don't fault you for trying to defend the B12, what else can you do at this point? It'll only get worse, again, not ISUs, nor any of their contemporaries, fault. This is the B1G and SECs fault for putting you in this situation.

So I'll stop beating a dead horse. Have a good one.

It’s true. Every program wants in the BIG/SEC. That’s where the money is and it’s where the future is. I’m glad I live somewhere where I can have season tickets at a BIG school, even though most of the conference is average right now too. The gap will widen IMO. I personally don’t root for that but it’s headed that way.

Having meaningful games across the conferences in November is great for the sport, which I care about more than any team itself. CFB is my fav.

However, it is funny that the average teams make themselves the victim of the playoff format when they don’t get in.

Ohio State & Oregon have the most money. Not surprising that they are the cream of the crop this year.

The current ESPN projections have #12 ASU @ #5 Ohio State.

Two big ifs. Huge ifs!

If iSU beats K State, then beats ASU in B12 title game (assuming ASU beats Arizona), the idea of playing O$U is awesome!

As a long time ISU fan, who suffered through bad football in the 80's and 90's, the sheer possibility of this happening is unreal.

Need to play well to beat K State. They may be gunning to take ISU out of the title chase. ISU struggles with mobile QBs. Avery Johnson is mobile and could give them trouble. It's supposed to be cold. Hope K State doesn't show up. 👃

Or, maybe they should just rank the top 12 teams, give the 4 best teams a 1st Round bye, and be done.

Here is the latest AP Top 25.

If you took the top 12 teams:
4 B1G teams
(Oregon, OSU, Penn St, Indiana)
3 SEC teams (Texas, Georgia, Tennessee)
3 ACC teams (Miami, SMU, Clemson)
0 Big 12 teams (Boise St & ND are the other 2 teams)

Here would be the matchups:

#12 Clemson at #5 Notre Dame
Winner plays #4 Penn State

#11 Boise State at #6 Georgia
Winner plays #3 Texas

#10 Indiana at #7 Tennessee
Winner plays #2 Ohio State

#9 SMU at #8 Miami
Winner plays #1 Oregon

Week 14 AP Top 25 poll

Released Nov 24, 2024
  1. Oregon (61)
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Penn State
  5. Notre Dame
  6. Georgia
  7. Tennessee
  8. Miami
  9. SMU
  10. Indiana
  11. Boise State
  12. Clemson
  13. Alabama
  14. Arizona State

  19. BYU
  20. Texas A&M
  21. UNLV
  22. Illinois

8 ESPN writers project #12 Boise State getting a FIRST ROUND BYE.

5 ESPN writers project #21 Arizona State getting a FIRST ROUND BYE.

Arizona State (9-2, 6-2) was picked in the preseason to finish last in the Big 12. Their 2 losses were to Texas Tech (30-22) and Cincinnati (24-14). They finish the regular season at Arizona (4-7, 2-6)

Facts.

16 teams are coming, IIRC

The B1G (4 bids) and SEC (4 bids) want 8 of the 16 bids, too
It is amazing to me that the schools (the ones with the power) let the NCAA strong arm them into several rounds of neutral site games.

Keep all of that on the campus'. The influx of $ for those towns would be great.

Good to know Iowa State fans are just as stupid as a lot of Iowa fans.

The Big XII is mediocre and irrelevant. And those are the nice things you can say about it.

If they wanted the best team right now, they'd have Kansas playing. They are playing very good ball right now.
Kstate seems to be Jekyll and Hyde. Watched some of their game Saturday night and if that performance shows up in Ames, the clowns can start bowl prep.
ASU playing very well also, and have a back is running people over.
The conference isn't world beaters, but teams playing entertaining football.

its not gonna be much fun if the Clowns are playing on Dec 7 for a Big 12 Championship

Imagine that. We got the expanded CFP just like everyone wanted, and before we even have the first one, 90% of its message board content is complaining about it. I, for one, am SHOCKED that humans are like this.... 😂

Why would that be funny? Its good for the conference. And Why exactly would some school from Idaho that plays on Blue turf be "more likeable". Don't get the inference

I like the setup of giving the conference champions first round byes. It's that way in the NFL and it rewards teams for a good regular season as it should. The issue I have is allowing a non P4 conference champion a chance at a bye. The 4 byes should go to the 4 P4 conference champions and their seeds should be based on their place in the overall rankings.

A G4 team still can make the playoffs and they can still host, they just shouldn't be allowed a bye.

it just looks like we aren't gonna get the 12 best teams in the playoff
Yeah, just like we never had the 2 best teams in the Coalition/Alliance/BCS championship, and we never had the 4 best teams in the 4-team CFP, and we'll never have the 16 best teams when the CFP expands to that......I get it.

Good for Iowa state. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

The NFL never has the best X number of teams either because of unbalanced schedules, AFC/NFC crossovers, etc. But it's still better than the 4 team and way better than the 2 team. I'm super excited to see how the first round home venue thing works out. Should be fun.
