Neither Current #8 SMU, #10 Boise State nor #15 Arizona State (or #16 Iowa State) should be getting a 1st Round Bye in the CFP

Big 12 Championship in Arlington, Texas

Arizona State vs Iowa State

Will the winner get a 1st round bye?
All depends on where they are ranked after championship week. If Boise State is ranked higher, they get the bye, plus SEC, Big Ten. So then it depends where ACC and Big 12 are ranked.

If you go by today's AP Top 25, correct me if I am wrong, but here would be the projected CFP match ups.

#12 seed Arizona State at #5 seed Penn State
Winner plays #4 seed Boise State

#9 seed Ohio State at #8 seed Tennessee
Winner plays #1 seed Oregon

#11 seed Alabama at #6 seed Notre Dame
Winner plays #3 seed SMU

#10 seed Indiana at #7 seed Georgia
Winner plays #2 seed Texas

I couldn’t agree more @Lane_Kiffin. Here is a thought for the @CFBPlayoff:

Ole Miss #31 strength of schedule and has 3 losses to unranked Kentucky, Florida and 8-4 LSU team.

#Illinois HAS #30 strength of schedule and has 3 losses
to #1 Oregon and #4 Penn State and a one possession game to Minnesota.

How about we just take the best 12 teams and see where it goes….

The Clown U & SMU (Rick Hart) athletic directors are having some fun back and forth.

SMU is ranked #8 and is projected to get a 1st round bye in the CFP as the ACC Champion.

The #16 ranked Clown U / #15 ranked Arizona State winner will advance to the CFP (likely as the 12th and final seed).

8 ESPN writers project #12 Boise State getting a FIRST ROUND BYE.

5 ESPN writers project #21 Arizona State getting a FIRST ROUND BYE.

Arizona State (9-2, 6-2) was picked in the preseason to finish last in the Big 12. Their 2 losses were to Texas Tech (30-22) and Cincinnati (24-14). They finish the regular season at Arizona (4-7, 2-6)

Conferences should always matter. The Big Ten and SEC did this to themselves.

Only thing that pisses me off is Alabama getting in if results hold.
It's annoying and exhausting, but I'm not going to lose sleep over who gets shafted at Spot 12.

The important thing is they get to the top cut right. Alabama/Texas jumping FSU last year at 3 & 4 had me much more upset than them getting in with a strong 9-3 record over a weak 10-2 record.

I am surprised the Power 2 (SEC, B1G) signed off on it.
Is it not enough that 8 of the 12 right now are from those 2 conferences alone? Now they have to take all the byes too?

I'm glad that Iowa is in a good position to be in a good conference, but the greed of these 2 conferences and the networks are driving college football into the ground.

SEC bias? Or politics?

If that’s accurate I’m obviously wrong. Thought I’d read that conference champions were at least guaranteed a home game in first round.

it's confusing, no doubt.

and there's ACC & Big 12 people pissed about these rankings that resulted in the projected #11 and #12 seeds.

They really need to expand to 16 teams. The teams getting a bye have a HUGE advantage.

They also need to assign seeding based on ranking, not the conference Bullsh*t.

I'm fine with auto bids for conference winners, but giving Boise St. and SMU the #3 and #4 seeds AND byes over the likes of PSU, Georgia, OSU, Notre Dame (screw them), and Tennessee is laughable.

Disagree - tho at least this is also a bit of an unusual year where the conference champs from the p4 conferences aren’t as good. In a more normal year, idk that there’d be much of a complaint about the ACC or B12 champs getting a home game if they didn’t get a bye. Boise has also earned at least that home game.

Yeah, think of the advantage not having to play in the 1st round is.

And I agree; SMU & Boise potentially getting 1st round byes is laughable.

I need more than one season of the expanded playoffs to make a statement like that. I don’t ultimately expect Boise to get a first round bye, but this is just kind of an odd year, oregons the #1, but they’re not head and shoulders above everyone else, and idk if there is a great team out there this season.

So you have b10 champ, the SEC champ and presumably b12 champ all getting byes…who would get the 4th if not SMU as ACC champs? Btw, what an indictment on this season that all four major conferences have debutantes in their conference title games. The each title game features at least one 2 loss team, should a 3 loss at large team jump a 12-1 SMU?

This presumes of course that 3 loss Clemson doesn’t beat SMU. If this season is the new normal I think this could be revisited, but for now imo we need more data before changing the original rules.

Boise hosts UNLV Friday night and they should win that game at home. And if they do, as Mountain West Champions, they are going to hold on to the #4 seed and a 1st round bye (I don't see the AZ State/ISU winner jumping them).

The debates will continue ;)

True

All will depend on those games. If Boise wins a close game while b12 game is a blowout? More of an argument. But again, there’s no obvious team that should get a bye over them - I don’t think you can give a team who didn’t even make the conference title game a bye instead of them.

One of the odder years in awhile imo.

And $20M in "NIL" only got Ohio State the #8 seed (as things stand now). I wonder how hot Ryan Day's seat is right now.

I don't buy that BSU is really any good outside of Jeannty (sp?). There is no way they should be getting an auto bid being from a conference, that is literally a mid-major, and that has less capability than the B12 does currently IMO.

It's entirely based off of their loss being to Oregon. I do understand that there's no obvious better option to put in over them but an auto bid just seems like such a stretch for a team that doesn't have to play anybody for about 92% of their 12 game season.

I'd be pissed if I was SMU or the B12 and I don't think they're in good conferences either but they're both better than the MWC.

Alas, I guess this is the point of the playoffs. Little guys really can get in now. I kinda love watching the whole thing play out and the pettiness on social media about it. It reminds me of how the country acted when we almost got in back in 2015. Quite the uproar.
