Nikki Haley stumbles when asked about the Civil War and slavery

So . . .

DeSantis thinks slavery had a good side and Haley seems not to think it was very important.

Yet they can't catch Trump. Not pandering enough? Not crazy enough?
It is quite simple really; they cannot catch him because they are not him. As unbelievable and insanely pathetic as it may be, at this point Donald Trump quite literally owns the Republican party, and will continue to do so until he is effectively incapacitated and/or removed from the picture. Let's just hope that happens sooner rather than later.

woman of color

noun

pluralwomen of color
: a woman whose skin pigmentation is other than and especially darker than what is considered characteristic of people typically defined as white (see WHITE entry 1 sense 2a) : a woman who is of a race (see RACE entry 1 sense 1a) other than white or who is of mixed race
… Sen. Kamala Harris of California, will become the first woman of color to accept a major party's vice presidential nomination on Wednesday.—Steve Peoples

In reality the 19th Amendment failed to enfranchise thousands of American women of color—Black, Asian, Latina and Native American.—Anna Bloom

Based on that, a sensible person would think she would know about slavery and the civil war. lol

Why does she have a problem saying the S word?

I guess the D smear machine has targeted a strong woman of color.

Deplorable yet so predictable.
Just wait until the leader of your party starts to go after her. Trump will dust off his Obama playbook as soon as she looks like more of a threat. I assume he's working on his clever zingers about her name right now.

Not surprising a troglodyte like yourself could not see that was a softball question she should have easily knocked over fence. That is the problem with MAGA though, she froze and worried more about not upsetting them and gave a terrible response.

Yep, softball question, Haley is certainly aware of the reality and the right answer but she also knows that a significant portion of her party are uncomfortable with reality, so she tries to avoid acknowledging it and you wind up with these moments.

It sounds like she's backtracking this morning. She's using the word slavery, but trying to pivot to a mealy mouthed answer about state's rights.

As Trump (or his non affiliated super PAC) says….”you can’t trust a word coming out of Tricky Nikki’s mouth” in their commercial.

I don’t disagree with her.

The tradition in the south was to keep black people as property and denied their rights as humans.

So….yeah….the Civil War was fought over these quaint and often misundertood traditions.
As long as you use the right blanket terms and do not directly acknowledge the human rights violations associated with the specific "tradition" in question, then it's ok.

Why are politicians getting questions on something that was eradicated by Republicans 160 years ago?
Slavery is alive and well in this century, as is unsafe child labor.

In examining what led to Schuls' death, federal investigators found him to be among nine minors, ages 14 to 17, employed at the mill. Some of the teens operated saws and other automated equipment to process lumber, which is illegal for people under 18, the agency said.
Aside from Schuls, three kids ages 15 to 16 suffered injuries at Florence Hardwoods between November of 2021 and March 2023, the Labor Department found. The day after Schuls' death, the mill's operator terminated all of the children's jobs, the agency noted.
In Schuls' case, Florence County Sheriff's Office reports obtained by the Associated Press said he hadn't pressed a safety button to turn off a conveyor machine before stepping on it to straighten wood that was hampering the equipment. He was trapped for 17 minutes before a supervisor found him unconscious. The cause of death was traumatic asphyxiation, the county coroner told the AP.
Schuls was a "hardworking, loving" student at Florence High School, where he played football, basketball, baseball and soccer, according to his obituary.

Should have been an easy question, especially for someone governing a state in the south, and who represents the party that was in favor of ending slavery, at the time.
Agree.

I feel she spends too much time trying to determine a response and how that response plays to her audience.

At this point, she has some momentum and seems to be appealing to some PACS like the Koch Bros.
She has to consider where her $$$ is coming from and weak answers like the one we're discussing aren't helping her.

A leftwing plant asking about a war that happened over 155 years ago.

So dumb.
As evidenced by your moniker, you are saying this as someone who has no knowledge about the South. I have lived in North Carolina for more than 30 years. It is remarkable how important "a war that happened over 155 years ago" is to a huge segment of the population here. The Sons of Confederate Veterans organization belongs to our local Chamber of Commerce; its representative attends all events in uniform. About five years ago, I attended a peaceful rally in front of our county courthouse urging the relocation of the huge Confederate monument that has sat right in front of the courthouse steps for 100 years. The city had to bring in about 25 cops midway through the proceedings to protect us from a quite surly mob of rednecks that appeared capable of violence. Like Nikki Haley, our county commissioners have to pander to these rednecks, as they make up a huge portion of their "base." The county ended up installing a garish, 10-foot-high fence around the monument to protect it--rather than moving it to a less-controversial location.
