****Official Cubs 2015 Thread****

Hopefully just rust. Going to need to be better today for hammel.

I agreed with the announcers that his first bad play out there was laziness. He totally played that ball non-chalantly and just side-flipped it instead of taking the time he had to set his feet and make a good throw. Hopefully with better focus, he'll be fine and just play good ball.

I think Baez had a slight case of the yips last night. Luckily for him, the errors didn't affect the W. Very understandable.

No Molina for StL...Grichuk in center otherwise is the only Cards change.

Obviously Molina is hurting, but it shows just how much when a player like him misses a potential elimination game.

Yes, because Cub fans are the paragon of class, dignity, and grace.

I said it in the game thread, and I'll say it here. Congratulations to the Cubs on winning the series. You were the better team. Any Cards fan who says otherwise is an idiot.

I want the Dodgers to win. I'd like the Mets and Dodgers to have to scrap it out a little more, and hopefully weaken themselves before one of them plays the Cubs.

Somebody needs to scramble on top of the video board in RF this morning. It's being reported that Schwarber's monstrous HR landed on top of the board.

It did. I was in section 418 looking dead ahead at it. Saw it bounce off the top of the board and clank off the bottom of the Budweiser sign. I knew it didnt go over, just cant believe it rested up there.

What will the Cubs do with Kyle Schwarber's home run ball on the video board?
A Cubs source confirmed to the Tribune that the monstrous Kyle Schwarber home run ball from Tuesday’s series-clinching win over the Cardinals landed on top of the right field video board.

A Cubs employee was sent to retrieve the ball Wednesday morning, and a source said the team verified it was the actual Schwarber ball through an MLB postseason watermark on it. It will be officially authenticated by MLB today.

The Cubs have returned it to its original location on top of the board and will leave it there until their postseason run has concluded.

The source said the Cubs will decide what to do with the ball after the season but wanted to leave it there for now as a memento of the Game 4 win. The Cubs are building a plexiglass case to preserve it from the elements, and will place it on top of the ball Wednesday afternoon.

A security guard will escort anyone going up to the top of the video board to service it so it won't be stolen. There will be no 24-hour security.

WLS-Ch. 7 first reported the ball was there after the Game 4 win, and it was later confirmed Wednesday by photos from a Tribune Co. employee who took before and after photos of the video board at the game.

The TBS cameras didn’t have any close-ups of the seventh-inning shot off Cardinals reliever Kevin Siegrist, which gave the Cubs a 6-4 lead.

Tom Comings, an enterprise architect for Tribune Publishing was taking photos of the board from section 538 in the right field upper-deck corner.

Comings took some shots of the board during the Harry Caray video between innings, and then came the Schwarber shot that was heard 'round Wrigleyville.

“We were watching and looking,” Comings said. “Nobody actually saw where it went at first and then instantly I said ‘There it is, on top of the scoreboard.' I put the picture on Twitter, and pictures from the seventh-inning stretch that clearly shows there was no ball up there then... It had to ricochet perfectly to land there.”

After the game, Comings and his friend asked a TBS cameraman if they had shown where the ball landed, assuming it was captured on TV. The cameraman, who was located in the upper deck behind home plate, zoomed in and told them he couldn’t see the top of the videoboard because his angle was too low.

Comings then went behind the Cubs’ dugout to join the celebration, and told an usher about the Schwarber ball. The usher referred him to the guest relations department.

“We showed them the picture and they got on radio and were verifying it was up there,” he said. “They told me they’d send someone to retrieve it, and then they called us back and gave us some stuff as thanks, a (Jon) Lester bobblehead, a thermos lunch bag and an Ernie Banks’ pin.”

Later Tuesday evening, sportscaster Mark Giangreco showed a video taken from a Ch. 7 chopper of a ball sitting on top of the board, which has a Budweiser sign on top of it. The ball was under the "i" in Budweiser.

Giangreco said they couldn’t verify whether it was the actual ball, but no other ball has been hit that far to right field. The video boards are in the first year of existence.

Some fans said on Twitter they thought they saw it clear the board, and everyone in the Cubs clubhouse assumed the ball went out of the park, including president Theo Epstein, pitcher Kyle Hendricks and catcher David Ross.

“Schwarber hit a ball out of the stadium,” Ross said.

But there was no conclusive evidence that the ball went on Sheffield Avenue, and no one was stepping up to claim the “Schwarbomb.”

WGN-Ch. 9 sent a helicopter to fly over the ballpark Wednesday morning and spotted the ball still sitting there under the Budweiser sign.

Now the ball is a piece of Cubs history, and will be there as a reminder to any pitchers the Cubs hitters face the rest of the postseason.

I'm surprised it's not more than that. I've already been offered 3k per for my tickets for game 4 of the World Series.

Really? Per ticket? Where are they? Did you buy them at the beginning of the playoffs? Wasn't sure how or if they were releasing any more.

You just know someone is going to try and get that ball. I heard someone say on the Score today that using a drone would be a good option. The plexiglass case had better be affixed to the top of the board somehow.
Hopefully if Schwarber doesn't want it they auction it off for Cubs Charities.

i made it to the game last night - i think i cheered for the baez bomb like we won the WS!

the schwarber hr was just incredible. we stood there laughing....

so much fun to make it to a game that meant that much. been a long time since i've felt that way walking into wrigley.

The Cubs announced Thursday that Addison Russell will miss all of the National League Championship Series.

Russell injured his hamstring stretching a double into a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night in Game 3 of the NLDS.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said they haven't decided whether to add a pitcher or player to the roster to take Russell's spot.

"We'll continue to work on him," Maddon said. Hopefully if everything plays properly, we have another opportunity for him to play in another round."

The team also said that that Jon Lester will start Game 1 Saturday night and Jake Arrieta will start Sunday's Game 2.

The Cubs will either play the Mets or the Dodgers.

I figure they'll go one of 3 ways to replace Russell. If Motte's ready, they could add him, otherwise it'll be Berry for his speed or Herrera to have another INF. If I had to bet money, I'd put them in that order of likelihood: 1. Mott (if healthy), 2. Berry, 3. Herrera.

I would also imagine they'll play matchups with the middle infield. Castro likely starts every game, but could play some short with LaStella at 2nd if Maddon doesn't like a Baez matchup with that day's starter.

When is the last time Motte pitched? It's been awhile, and I've never heard reports of him doing in rehab work in Arizona. I think he's just a cheerleader at this point. a position player makes sense, but, given the fact that at Hammels start will be a bullpen affair again (And, Joe won't be afraid to pull the trigger on Hendricks), it might be another pitcher.

That's a good point about his rehab, and he might not be likely to return. I just know there has been speculation recently if he's close to ready. Ramirez could be an option and they could always add Haren as the first relief option in a "bullpen game" or as a guy who can stretch an extra-inning game.

I still see Herrera as one of the last options. It's unfortunate for him, as he's done some good things this year, but I think they either go another arm or go Berry who can clearly be an advantage as a PR.

Another hitter is always good to have on the bench but I really think he will throw a P in with it being a 7 game series. It would be nice to have someone else that can play SS should Baez get injured but I have to imagine they are confident enough in Coughlan and La Stella at 2nd if Baez were to ever get injured and move Castro over.

I am guessing they go with Herrera. They will want another infielder on the bench.

It is smart to sit Russell. You want the chance to play him in the WS if you make that far and he is ready. Let him rest and rehab. Baez will shine.

The schedule might make a big difference. I don't have it in front of me, but, I think it's Saturday/Sunday, an off day, then Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. Three days in a row may signal the need to have an extra arm.

Correct me if I am wrong, but, you can add a player if someone gets injured. So, God forbid Baez or Castro gets hurt you can add a replacement in the middle of the series.

You can add a player, but the player you replace is out for the next series too, if you make it that far.

We'll see what happens the first two games in Chicago. If the Cubs find a way to win those two, then the series is back on. Doesn't look great, though, taking Ls in the Lester & Arrieta starts. Gotta get the offense going. The pitching wasn't outstanding for the Cubs, but Lester and Arrieta battled and kept the Cubs in range if they could have scored some runs.

One key factor in both games was the fact that NY scored in the first inning both times. I realize Lester and Arrieta can't be giving up 1st inning homers, but it would be nice if the Cubs could get some early offense.

Harvey was awesome on Saturday night. In Game 2, I thought the Cubs approach at the plate was lousy.

I agree. I thought the Cubs would be more aggressive last night and go after first pitch fastballs. They just looked uncomfortable in the box as at-bats went on.
