*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

At the time of the trade Addison Russell was thought to be the better player and have a higher upside than Javy Baez. Gleyber was essentially blocked as the Cubs had their middle infield of the future. Flipping him for a piece that completes the puzzle for a WS title was considered the smart thing to do.

Hindsight is 20/20. You could not predict what would happen with Russell or any of the other young Cubs that actually delivered on a WS title. For all the Cubs knew Gleybor could have become the next Corey Patterson or Felix Pie, or Josh Vitters, or, the list is too numerous to count.
Seems logical, but having a mega prospect like Torres and getting a 2 month rental for 1 WS title for him seems short sighted.

And I have a very hard time believing that there weren't hints of the character flaws on Russell that weren't evident before they dealt Torres.

If Cubs fans are happy, then Einstein succeeded. But that seems like an extremely high price to have been paid. Cubs are just fortunate the team compensated for Maddon's abuse of Chapman and still won. That misuse virtually guaranteed Chapman wouldn't want to stay a Cub.

Quintana logs a lot of innings over the course of a season, something you need out of a starter. Going all the way back to his White Sox days he will give you 30 starts and 200 innings per year of consistently average 3-4 starter numbers. He's not top of the line, never was meant to be top of the line, but was a cost controlled, innings eating starter. Just view him for what he is and not what you think he should be.

I agree with this....and Cease + Jimenez was a very, very steep price to pay for a cost-controlled, innings-eating starter. Quintana has value, no doubt. In fact, I look at his value in two pieces....the trade and keeping him. The trade, IMHO, was terrible. As stated by others the Cease/Jimenez package should have garnered a higher level starter than Q. As for his deal, he's actually still worth more than his money. He's not an ace, but he's an above-average starter who rarely misses a start and (last night aside) will generally give you a reliable 6-7 innings.

One other thing to consider was that when the Torres trade was made, the Cubs were still pretty flush with prospects. KB, Russell, Baez, Soler and Schwarber were all up and past prospect status, but Contreras, Happ, Almora, Edwards, Caratini were all still on the way up. Below is the Cubs' top 30 prospects prior to the start of the 2016 season. In bold blue are the guys that stuck in the bigs with the Cubs and the guys bold in black are all the guys traded in 2016-2019 for parts (Note: While no longer a prospect by 2016, Soler was traded for Wade Davis).
  1. Gleyber Torres, SS (7, 1) - For Chapman
  2. Willson Contreras, C (NR, 10)
  3. Ian Happ, 2B/OF (NA, 6)
  4. Duane Underwood Jr., RHP (8, 4)
  5. Albert Almora Jr., OF (6, 5)
  6. Billy McKinney, OF (9, 2) - For Chapman
  7. Jeimer Candelario, 3B (15, 20) - For Justin Wilson/Avila
  8. Dylan Cease, RHP (21, 11) - For Quintana
  9. Oscar De La Cruz, RHP (NR, 24)
  10. Eloy Jimenez, OF (12, 14) - For Quintana
  11. Pierce Johnson, RHP (10, 7)
  12. Donnie Dewees, OF (NA, 8) - For Alec Mills
  13. Bryan Hudson, LHP (NA, 15)
  14. Darryl ‘D.J.’ Wilson, OF (NA, 26)
  15. Eddy Julio Martinez, OF (NA, 12)
  16. Carl Edwards Jr., RHP (4, 3)
  17. Justin Steele, LHP (17, 16)
  18. Mark Zagunis, OF (18, 9)
  19. Ryan Williams, RHP (NR, 30)
  20. Dan Vogelbach, 1B (16, 13) - For Montgomery
  21. Trevor Clifton, RHP (29, 27)
  22. Jake Stinnett, RHP (13, 21)
  23. Carson Sands, LHP (14, 18)
  24. Jen-Ho Tseng, RHP (11, 17)
  25. Victor Caratini, C (19, 23)
  26. Christian Villanueva, 3B/1B (24, 22)
  27. Corey Black, RHP (20, 19)
  28. Jacob Hannemann, OF (22, 28)
  29. Brad Markey, RHP (NR, NR)
  30. Josh Conway, RHP (NR, NR)
The Cubs gutted the system all at once by promotions and trades. They hit on a very high number of guys and made very good use of others....but dealing half your top 10 in roughly a calendar year while promoting another 3 is definitely going to leave a hole.

Imagine a world where Yankee fans didn't act like effin Husker fans. Ahh what a glorious world that would be.

Epstein may very well be gone soon, but he still did bring the Cubs a championship.
Yankee fans aren't anywhere near Husker fans. NYY has a string of 27 consecutive winning seasons and four, count em four, WS titles since 1998.

But you already knew that. You're grasping at straws again to defend Theo.

Jason McLeod getting promoted likely means one of the following:

1. Theo doesn't think there is a talent problem, and that his crew is still the smartest in the game.

2. Theo knows McLeod is bad at his job, but would rather be surrounded by "yes men." I'm still not sure what Jed Homer actually does either.

3. Theo does not care anymore.

This is the equivalent of a college football program promoting a Recruiting Coordinator to Defensive Coordinator after several terrible recruiting classes.

I thought it was a joke when I saw it on Twitter.

IMO theo likes jason and thinks he can succeed in a different role because sometimes the guy that cant connect with recruits anymore can still coach.

I am in no way defending him or what has been happening.

BTW, 1998 was 21 years ago. And it is amazing that you picked that distinct year, since the Yankees won 3 in row starting then. So, since 2001, the Cubs and the Yankees have the exact same number of rings. One. So yes, you are Husker fans when it comes living in the past. The only difference is they have zero since 97.

You are the biggest a@@ho#e and troll when it comes to this entire thread.

Also, like Nebraska fans, feels the need to thump his chest in a place where no one gives a **** about their team. Dude is talking shit about the Yankees in a Chicago Cubs thread. What a dork.

This is a Cubs related thread. Nearly every post, unless I'm responding directly to a specific poster(post) is Cub relevant.

Next year start a thread and title it "Cubs fans only" if you don't want contrasting opinions.

Next season I’ll start a Yankees thread just for you and I’ll clog it up with Cubs BS all season long.

Yep. I’d do this trade again today even if I knew the outcome. We won a WS and rode Chapman like an OP’s Mom.

WS are damn hard to win even with a great team. See Dodgers, Los Angeles.

Agreed, the trade worked out great for both teams. Citing a trade that was essential to winning the elusive WS is one of the worst trolling efforts of all time.

Thank you for reporting. Maybe they can see what a jerk you are throughout this entire thread and how many times you have been asked to leave.

IF the MLB season ended today, the Chicago Cubs
would play at the stadium of the Washington Nationals
for the Wild Card entry into the playoffs.

Do you think it's a bad look when they have scapegoated their hitting and pitching coaches in the last two offseasons (and will scapegoat Maddon this fall), but if you are Theo's friend, there is no accountability despite how poorly you are doing your job?

No, if the season ended today, the Cubs would be in the playoffs as a Wild Card team and would play Washington at their place for the privilege and joy of taking on the LA Dodgers.

It looks awful

Cub Owner Tom Ricketts has Theo under contract
for one more year after this season. They might
mutually agree for Theo to leave the Cubs and get
another job. The Boston Red Sox might invite Theo
back since they have an opening for a GM.

Good luck with that.

Why not listen on Javy? I'd listen on anyone....but some guys are going to be REALLY expensive. Even KB....while it makes some sense to move him, I'm sure as hell not giving him away.
I view Javy as the face of the franchise right now. He probably sells more tickets than anyone else on the team. Just my opinion though.

Someone would have to overpay to make me trade him.....but if they did, wow, what a haul that would be.

Why does my channel guide say that the Cubs/Padres game is on ESPN, but I'm watching a 9/11 show about how the sports world reacted after the attacks?

We have known this for the past couple of years. There is no in between with this team. It is feast or famine when it comes to scoring runs. I think this is the most frustrating thing about this team. And the pitching staff has no room for error, because they don't know which offense is showing up that night.
