*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Hoerner has been great for the team. Not only his play but his energy and excitement to be there. Cubs have been missing that in my opinion and a big reason why they've stunk.

He is providing some energy and athleticism, that's awesome. Let's see what happens when the scouting catches up to him. Then, we'll see how he reacts. I am optimistic about his future.

I gotta be honest, I don't think the Cubs are going to win the WS this season, but, as a fan I will follow the ups and downs for the rest of the season. There is some important stuff to figure out, and maybe Rizzo's injury sharpens the focus on some of those items. I've repeatedly said that Rizzo needs more days off. A guy with a creaky back needs days off. How the Cubs adapt is important. Will Caratini get more chances? How does that affect plans at catcher for next season? There is still a lot to figure out.

id like to see contreras catch 2 days a week max, play LF or RF 2 days a week and play 1st once a week.

Agreed. I think potential is there, but as we've seen with a lot of the young guys they just seem to get complacent and borderline entitled. Throw on top of that the scouting reports and they have not gotten better for the most part.

The NL Central is basically their own version of the sausage races they have in Milwaukee. One gets a couple steps on the others, then falls back as the third place one surges ahead, who then slows and gets passed by the second place runner. So, naturally, I'm assuming the Cards finish way out of it, and the Cubs and Brewers fight for the division.

I agree. I keep going back to Rizzo's back and the value of going out and getting a veteran back up catcher this off season. Rizzo misses games every year due to his back. Maybe the Cubs should decide that Rizzo is going to start 130 games a year. Caratini can spell him, as can KB or Happ. With Contreras out from behind the plate the Cubs would be a much better job opportunity for a #2 catcher. They can tell a player and his agent that you get to play for a winner, and you'll get at a minimum 40 starts a year.

I run the gamut of emotions with each and every game...make that every inning :D.

Where does Russell fit in next year?

How about Schwarber?

Can they hang onto Castellanos?

Can they shore up a very leaky bullpen?

What’s the physical status of Jon Lester?

Russell: On another team.
Schwarber: In the AL
Castellanos: We'll find out soon enough. I think he has found hitting in Wrigley, being on a winning team, and being in a world class city to his liking. But, it only takes one GM to way over bid.
Bullpen: Getting a manager who doesn't destroys arms should help, and they will have money to spend. I think they have some very intriguing, in house options. I have been impressed by the progress of Hultzen in making it back to the bigs, and keep an eye out for Kendall Graveman next season. I don't know if he will start, or be in the bullpen, but he pitched effectively in the minors this season while rehabbing from surgery.
Lester: He's sliding down to being a #3, but that's okay for the tail end of his career.

Fair enough, I almost said #4. I will give Lester some credit for still having some guile to his game. He is not Big Game Jon anymore, but I'd take him against most teams middle of the rotation guys.

FYI, right hander Cory Abbot and OF Brennen Davis were named the pitcher of the year, and the player of the year in the minor league system respectively. Abbot absolutely shined in AA. He could be in line to make an appearance in Wrigley at some point in 2020.
Davis was in low A, but he was significantly challenged with a full season assignment. Pretty good for a guy signed out of high school.

Keep doing that thing, Kyle Schwarber. You are more and more valuable to Theo if you keep hitting homers. There has to be an AL GM with a 2B that can lead off needing a DH.

Theo loves his Schwarber. Now he’s going to want to keep him.

I kind of want to keep him too. He's got a .942 OPS the second half of the year, .978 in Aug, .981 in Sep. This doesn't seem like just a hot streak either, it seems more like a guy finally figuring things out. I don't want to trade a .270/.350/.600 guy right as everything clicks for him.

Also, I think I'd rather see Chatwood start than Hamels at this point, he's been terrible since he came back from his injury. Go with a Chatwood/Underwood/Mills bullpen day every fifth day.

I don't think he'll hit quite as well as you project, but I can totally see him being .250/.330/.560. He's hitting arbitration this year for the first time, so there's still a lot of team control, which will keep him cheap. I'll take a guy who can give good at-bats and approach .900 OPS. He's valuable enough that he's not someone you give away, but if someone comes in aggressively wanting him to be DH, he could still be traded.

So, Zobrist still has his wife’s crappy version of Bennie and the Jets as his walk up music.
Get yourself healthy, Bro.

Is it safe to assume his wife was having an affair? "Inappropriate Marital Misconduct" is the reason Zobrist sited. The record also indicates "Husband is unsure if the marriage can be salvaged". Sounds like she was getting some side dick to me.

Maybe she was rooting for the Cardinals? :)

Schwarber has a .238 B.A. with 88 RBI's and 37 HRs
for this season.

Soler with K.C. has a .258 B.A. with 109 RBI's and
45 HRs.

Cubs had a great farm system with outfielders for a
short time.
