*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Pirates Josh Bell's splits after Dickerson left are incredible. Went from 1.024 OPS to .788 27 Hrs to 10...Different team than early in the year...That's why when you play a team that's out of the race makes a difference...That's why the Cubs beat them 47 - 15, then only scored 23 runs in the next 8 games...

Uh huh

And it why the Cubs could only manage 2 runs against them yesterday, and only 2 so far today. Because.........Josh Bell.........is.........somehow......preventing.........the ..........Cubs.
......from............scoring...........

i disagree, he said after last year that they were close and prioritizing play over potential would be a priority. Now he’s saying he we a lot to fix.

That's actually true. Good call. Now we'll see if he does. If this time next year, we're listening to Theo lay stuff out to fix, it probably means we need to fix head of baseball ops.

So you would rather play Houston after they acquired Grieke at the deadline or before? See the 100 posts above to figure out why the Cubs aren't scoring. When a good player like Josh Bell loses an all star team mate, gold glover who bats around him, his numbers go down.
It's why the Cards, having swept the Cubs in Wrigley, went out to play the D'backs who are now "mailing it in" and lost 2 of 3 to them.....
Arizona was still fighting for a WC spot when the Cards came to town. We knocked them out Monday night. They aren't " tanking " like the last place Pirates have.

I even forgot about Marte not playing...

The offseason has started early for injured Pittsburgh Pirates Josh Bell, Starling Marte, Cole Tucker and Elias Diaz.

Todd Tomczyk, the Pirates director of sports medicine, said the team’s management and medical personnel have decided to shut down those injured players for the remainder of the season.

In the cases of Bell and Marte, the decision is no surprise. Bell has been out since Sept. 13 with a left groin strain. Marte hasn’t played since spraining his left wrist Sept. 8 while making a diving catch.

Both could play “if we were in a different place in the season and a different place in the standings,” Tomczyk said.

Tomczyk said he met with Bell before the game Wednesday with the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park.

“(Bell said), ‘Really? Do we really have to do this?’ ” Tomczyk said.

“I told him, ‘Josh, this is what’s best for you.’ He’s still fighting it to the last minute.”

Bell finishes his first All-Star season with 37 home runs (tied for eighth in the National League with the Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber) and 116 RBIs (fifth). His slash line closes at .277/.367/.569.

“Josh wants to be out there. He wants to finish on the field with his teammates,” Tomczyk said. “But as a group, medical team and organization standpoint, it’s best for his offseason to begin right now.”

Tomczyk said Marte also wants to play, but he is experiencing some “minor discomfort with swinging.”

Marte hit .295 and set career highs with 23 home runs , 82 RBIs, a .503 slugging percentage and .845 OPS (on-base, plus slugging). He has been replaced in center field by rookie Bryan Reynolds, who took a .314 batting average into Wednesday’s game.

Yep, it matters a lot when you play last place teams looking to next year...

No. AZ has been eliminated. I believe for the whole series. If not mathematically, they were within 1 game, and had 3 other teams who had to 'lose out' for that to happen.

You're just making excuses for poor management and poor ownership.

Yes, we eliminated them Monday. You even quoted me.

Protip: You're not eliminated, unless you're eliminated mathematically. Go to bed and get ready to post more impeachment threads tomorrow...

Will the Cubs help the Brewers this weekend and show some spine vs the Cards? Brewers only one game back in loss column after going 17-2...amazing.

So, after they were "mathematically eliminated", they went on to a 19-inning win over St Louis yesterday, and another win w/ a 9 run outburst today.

Yep. Them Douchebacks was just "mailin' it in" all right....
One game does not equal a whole half a season. Pirates within 2.5 games July 7. 22 games behind when they went to Milwaukee last week. Tanked it. They had dumped players at the deadline for future prospects, Lyles went from Pitt to Milwaukee and is 7 -1 for Milwaukee since the deadline. Pirates are a much worse team than when the Cards played them earlier in the season. Comprende?

LOL

I just had to look this one up.
The Brewers had to play Houston WITH Greinke, on September 3.

And they beat him. Scored 4 runs off him.
Using a "washed up" Pirates pitcher they acquired who had around a 5.50 ERA.

Seems like the Brewers just do a better job of player acquisitions, and maximizing the output of the talent they get. That's just better managing and better coaching.

The Brewers BEAT Greinke on September 3rd.

Comprende?

didn't Dickerson miss 2 months early in the season. When Bell was hitting quit well?

As crappy as the Cubs have been lately, how about the Brewers! The run they’ve been on (especially without Yelich) has been unreal. All the crap Im getting from my Cardinals friends will be even better when the Brewers end up winning the division.

Seems like Counsel's formula of stacking the pitching staff (RPs) up w/ converted starters, then limiting his actual SPs to 4-5 innings and bringing another legit #3/4 starter in for an inning or two, works. His pitching this month has been unreal, and part of that is guys coming off the IL as well as guys who are still fresh because they haven't been overused over the past few months.

How many teams have a RP who can come in for 2-3 innings that were legit #1/2 All Star starters (Woodruff) or a Brent Suter coming of TJ surgery and pitching ~20 innings to a ~0.50 ERA? If you don't get any runs off them in the first couple innings or so, they've got a line of guys to bring in for short stints that are very very tough to score off. Whatever their pitching coaches are doing, they're doing it right - Lyles went from a 5.40 ERA at the trade deadline in July to something in the mid 2.00's for the Brewers (actually 2.40, in 26 innings in Sept).

I think their Sept staff ERA is around 2.70; that's almost a full run better than the team w/ the 3rd best Sept ERA, the Dodgers (3.60). If they had Yelich back, these guys could be legit WS contenders right now....

I suspect Rizzo is done for the year. BN had a picture today of his sprained ankle. Gross. There is no reason to have him push on at this point. They might as well give Happ a few starts at first, and mix in someone else for a start.
Bryant is done. Baez is done. Kimbrel hasn't pitched since his melt down last
Saturday. I imagine he is done, too.

If it’s the same one I saw, that picture was taken on Sept 20. Either way, he deserves a ton of credit for playing hurt and trying to help his team make the playoffs. At this point, shut him down.
