*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

In the Quad Cities, they have two different funeral homes running commercials when it is on a local channel. They saw this season coming.

A few thoughts:

1. I find myself caring less and less each of the last couple of seasons, which is a good thing. Not sure if it is 2016, growing family responsibilities, the decline of the franchise, or a combination but I can barely watch more than an inning at a time.

2. Darvish might give Heyward a run for his money in the bad contract department. Through two starts, he has gone 6 2/3 innings and leads MLB in walks.

3. I have been wrong often in these threads, namely wanting to trade Javy because I didn't think his plate discipline could lead to anything better than league average at the plate. He is an absolute anomaly and I am thrilled to be wrong.

4. I repeatedly said last year that Theo's bad contracts and lack of pitching development would shorten the competitive window. Some of the responses here indicated that these contracts weren't that's bad "because it's just money" and that it wouldn't limit what the Cubs could do in the future. We are seeing my doomsday prediction come to fruition. Theo/Hoyer/McLeod could have done better drafting/signing amateur pitchers if they did no scouting and simply went by rankings on public lists.

We saw that Theo was unable to make substantial changes to the team in the offseason, and it is his own fault. He seemingly has to sleep in the bed that he and hi son buddies made.

5. People who blame the Ricketts have a difficult time with math. The Cubs have the 2nd highest payroll in MLB at $209M. The NL Central has the Cardinals at $163M and the Brewers at $124M. I have seen people on Twitter state that if the Cubs don't contend this year, it's because Ricketts didn't provide the resources.

"What those people are saying is 'The Cubs spend $46M more than St. Louis and $85M more than Milwaukee, but poor Theo wasn't given enough money to compete."
1-i can sure watch more than 1 inning, but otherwise I hear ya
2-Don't forget about quintana! Money not bad, but the actual cost could end up being insane!
3-k
4-they could always spend more money
5-How much money do the cubs gross each year? How about the turds/drunks? And obviously it's easier for small markets to compete on a smaller budget when the get extra drafts picks and extra int'l $. Not saying I don't blame theo, but lets not act like the ricHetts couldn't spend more....

Next year, Hamels ($20M), Zobrist ($12M), Cishek ($6.5M), Strop ($6.25M) and Kintzler ($5M) come off the books. That's just a shade under $50M. There are also club options on Rizzo ($14.5M), Morrow ($12M), Quintana ($10.5M), Brach ($5M), Barnette ($3M) and Graveman ($3M). I'm sure they'll pick up Rizzo's option, but there's a fair chance they let Morrow and Brach walk, maybe even Quintana. All totaled, that's $65-75M to spend without increasing payroll. The next year, Lester, Chatwood and the guys with club options in 2020 are gone (except Rizzo, who would have one more club option). That's close to another $40-60M depending on who they keep into 2020.

The Cubs may have a lull if this year is a dud, but they still have a lot of young bats (plus some guys on the farm like Hoerner) plus a lot of money to spend. There's no reason to assume that the Cubs are in an endless downward spiral. Heck, if this year really does go south, they may well be able to make some deals at the deadline to sell off some parts and get an injection of prospects and/or international cash.
The cubs dont' have a lot of money, apparently they have no money to spend ;).
50M is great until you realize that has to go towards replacing all those guys and covering the increasing pay of all the younger guys.

Jeez, was there one good move made by the Cubs since 2016. Everyone I can think of is shit.

I suppose it's going to be nice watching these games with no expectations of winning this season. A stress free summer. Lots of drinking though.

Thanks for killing that comeback Carl Jr. The pitching staff F-ing sucks. 5 runs should be enough to win. 10 runs should be enough to win. The offense is going to have to put up 15 runs a game with this garbage pitching staff. WTF? Might as well bring up the entire I-Cubs staff, they couldn't do any worse.

If Cishek goes 1-2-3 this inning I will be happy, then pissed because why the hell was Carl Jr. in the game?

Joe Girardi has always wanted to manage the Cubs.
Theo Epstein may hire him sooner than you think.
Joe Maddon's seat in the dugout is getting hotter by
the minute.

Pat Hughes is in mid-season, Cubs suck form. Stories galore. We're back to the Pat & Ron show days, and I'll listen every day.

Cubs O has now put up 7 runs tonight. That's more than enough to win. This pitching staff is garbage.

Just sign David Bote to a 5 year deal. Hey, let's put him on the bench, great idea. Gets a pinch hit opportunity and gets a hit. Who would have thunk that?

Stupid Cubs! Fortunately, Imon isn’t broadcasting the game on 709 tonight. Well, nothing is being shown on 707-710. The Kirkwood channel’s coming through, though.
We were at a movie, and I turned on the game for the drive home. I couldn't find the game anywhere on TV, but then I realized this appears to be a waste of time. But, hey, we'll get the right to pay an extra $7 a month to watch this premium baseball next year.

I do have to say, the Cubs radio broadcast crew is the best in the business. Pat Hughes can turn the worst game into "must listen" radio. My man Ron Santo was his running partner for years (RIP in peace Ronnie) but Ron Coomer is doing a good job.

All those years of losing, the radio broadcast is worth listening to, win or lose, it's entertaining.

Put up 10 runs tonight and it's not enough. Are you kidding me? This pitching staff better get it figured out.

Would have only been 5 if the brewers had used Hader. Now brewers can use him for 2 inngs to seal a win on Saturday or Sunday. Really did them a favor by sucking this bad in the opener.

You don't know that. Cubs may have gotten to Hader, he's not invincible. But yeah, I get what you're saying.

You want them to burn as many inngs as possible on that arm. When he's had multiple days off he tends to be extremely juiced. Rather face him when he's throwing 93-96 then 97-99.

Well, of course. I completely agree with you.

Maybe we could trade Carl Jr. to the Brewers for a bag of dirt. We'd come out ahead on that deal.

From what I can tell, the only way Hader plays is to keep his arm fresh while he seals the deal on a 17-8 Brewer victory. This pitching staff looks historically bad.

Vince & Lou were awesome back in the day, weren’t they?

Pat & Ron/Ron were/are very enjoyable as well.

we've made some good deals since then. too bad, they are short term and all the long term have been beyond horrible :(

I was down to see him fired after the WS, so it wouldn't bother me!
HOWEVER, theo is just as much to blame for the spot we are in(if not more).

i will NOT be spending my money on the cubs network if they don't put it to use.
will they care? No, but it's all I can do :)
