*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Edwards optioned. Monty to IL.

I have always wondered if Edwards’ inability to get the 3rd out in Game 7 in Cleveland left an emotional scar on his confidence. He obviously has had productive stretches since then, but I think being able to close it out would have been a big positive in his subsequent career and possible development into a closer.

No matter what happens with these two from this point forward, they will always be remembered for getting those last outs in 2016.

2017 was probably his best year

I would like to see the exact stats (and I did not see his outing last night) but with Carl, I have noticed that if he retires the first batter, he is usually very good. If he lets the first guy on, he seemingly has zero ability to overcome the adversity.

Between Darvish and CJ, you have two extremely mentally fragile pitchers.

Gave up a hr to the first batter last night.

Allen Webster and Kyle Ryan are coming up. Ryan has had some MLB time, and Webster is a guy who should have broken camp on the roster based off of performance.
To clear a spot the Cubs have DFA'd Jen Hso-Tseng. He at one time had a lot of promise, and received a large IFA bonus. He just never found consistency.

we've made some good deals since then. too bad, they are short term and all the long term have been beyond horrible :(

I was down to see him fired after the WS, so it wouldn't bother me!
HOWEVER, theo is just as much to blame for the spot we are in(if not more).

You got to wonder how any of this is Joe Maddon's fault. Every single pitcher so far this year is shit except one. Every one. You can't even blame the pitching coach for that. You can't manage pitchers to be better. If anything, Theo should be fired for this mess. The season isn't over yet, though.

Pat Hughes was on the Score this morning and he said Hamels had to go six scoreless, maybe give up one run...

I've been mostly watching the Final Four, but Hamels has been flirting with disaster all game long. He's really gutting it out. Keep the freaking pen out of this as long as you can, Joe.

All of you bandwagon riding sons of bitches from Naperville can line up and go to Hell.

Glad to get a win!

With a good outing from Hendricks tomorrow, they will be at 3-6. Over the course of a 162-game season, a 3-6 road trip is not some huge calamity. As you may recall, the 2016 Cubs had a 5-15 stretch right before the All-Star Break.

What has been particularly concerning with this road trip is that it is 100% a pitching problem, and the talent might not be in the system to fix it. I am less concerned about the bullpen than the starters. Bullpen performance ebbs and flows, but the Cubs have to start getting 6 innings from their SP. Hamels was adequate tonight, Lester has been solid (I expect regression as his "stuff" is not looking too good), and I have full confidence in Hendricks.

Quintana and Darvish are the keys to this team competing. They will have a top 3-4 offense in the NL by simply showing up, and the defense can't be any worse than it was on this trip.

You aren't wrong, but the bullpen still sucked tonight.

To his point though, a bullpen is easier to improve on the fly. Guys are more prone to being hot/cold and there are always available arms. You really can't go from terrible to great in-season, but you can go from terrible to adequate.

Matt Spiegel mentioned this morning that the bullpen has been far too important because Theo gave away Eloy Jiminez and Dylan Cease for Jose Quintana who is lucky to go five innings, and he gave made two FA blunders in Darvish and Chatwood.

Julian Green is being interviewed during the broadcast and he just said the Cubs are asking fans to show up 2 hours early to opening day? They must be anticipating an absolute s*** show. Is it expected that the ticketless system will add that much time, or are there new security protocols? If you are telling people it will take 2 hours to clear a line and get in the stadium you are telling people they shouldn't bother buying a ticket, and they should stay home.

Cubs ERA was a staggering 7.87 before today’s game. Almost a full point higher than the second to worst (interestingly enough the Red Sox!!)

Ben Zobrist will bat leadoff Monday as the Cubs look for a spark in their home opener against the Pirates at Wrigley Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. when the temperature is expected to be 63 degrees.

The Cubs, off to a 2-7 start, were harnessed by the BrewersKyle Davies, Alex Claudio and Josh Hader in a 4-2 loss Sunday that dropped them 5 1/2 games out of first place in the National League Central.

Here’s the Cubs’ lineup:

Zobrist RF

Bryant 3B

Rizzo 1B

Baez SS

Schwarber LF

Contreras C

Descalso 2B

Heyward CF

Lester P
