*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

Last night was a good example of the maturation of Javy Baez as a hitter. Thigh high pitch on the edge of the outside corner, and he just slapped it that way. No winding up and attempting to hammer it. He looked for a strike from a pitcher that was on the ropes, and put it solidly into play.

Terrible situation for a pitcher. He had to at least pitch near the plate or he walks him. But if you pitch anywhere near the plate, Javy can hit it. And a slider in the dirt risks a wild pitch, so that wasn't an appealing option, either.

Guys,

What a win last night. My family schedule required me to listen to chunks of the game on radio, and Zach Zaidman was filling in for Pat Hughes. How in the world did he land that gig? Pat sets a high bar, but Zach is on the level of what you'd get for a student-led broadcast on a college campus.

As I have said before, he sounds like he is whispering a secret instead of calling a game. He did solid reporting when he was on the Bears beat for the Score, but he isn't a play-by-play guy.
Also, I did hear some chatter on the Score yesterday about who will staff the new Cubs Network, or whatever it is called. Len and JD are going to call games, but there is a lot of jobs to fill, and Sinclair bought up a lot of regional networks. Look for a lot of people you've never heard of to be on the network.

I feel like I saw the rate of failure for pitchers in drafts is heads and shoulders above that of positional players. Guessing that’s why so many teams are moving to draft bats over pitchers early on.

Also, the front office has done well at trading for pitchers that were nothing special and making them great (Arrieta and Hendricks) or serviceable (Strop, Edwards, Montgomery).

I agree with this....but yet being 7 years in and having Dillon Maples and Rob Zastryzny as being maybe the best of "home grown" bullpen contributors is pretty staggering. Developing pitchers is hard, but it's hard to imagine not having even much in the way of middle relievers coming up through the system.

Well, you are really going to be disappointed when the Cubs formally announce that Rowan Wick is coming up today.

All I really want is effective pitching. Isn't he the guy that used to be a catcher in the Cardinals org and most recently the Cubs got him from SD?

Going off of memory, yes. So, I guess the Cubs can claim to have developed him?

FART!!
I was supposed to be at Wrigley last night and tonight. Good baseball each night.

Kudos to Chatwood tonight. He did not suck, and did not walk the bases full. The homer he gave up was a solo shot with a 5 run lead and two outs in the inning. Just had to challenge there, and a MLB hitter put it out of the park.

I like just about everything I've seen from Chatwood this year. Maybe he could be an answer at the back end of the pen.

To add to this, Chatwood has had two bad outings: at Texas on 3/31 where he gave up 3 ER in 1.2 on 2 hits and 2 BB and 5/5 against the Cardinals when he gave up 3 ER in 1 IP on 3 hits. In his other 11 outings, here's his line:

29.2 IP, 15 hits, 15 BB, 23 K and 3 ER. That's basically a 1.00 WHIP and 0.91 ERA. Still a little more wild than I'd like, but he's scattering his baserunners, generally.

Meh. Middle infielders the Cubs have developed, and continue to push through the system. And, in return for Torres the Cubs got a closer for a WS team. There might have been other deals to have been made involving other players, but that one won't haunt me as a fan.

Agreed. I get a little sick thinking about Jiminez & Cease for Quintana sometimes, but Torres for Chapman never gives me heartburn. The 2016 World Series was priceless.
