*****Official Cubs 2019 thread*****

I hated it at the time...could have gotten Verlander for low Prospects

Just imagine this Cubs starting five...

Verlander
Lester
Hendricks
Hamels
Arrieta

With Cease and Alzolay on the way up.

Then imagine Jimenez in RF instead of Heyward.

And maybe we sent Schwarber to the Yanks instead of Torres. You could have Torres at SS and Javy at 2B.

That’s the dynasty we were all hoping for. Instead Theo gave us the baseball version of the 85 Bears.

Here are the records of the starting rotation of Cubs:

Hendricks 7 wins and 5 losses
Hamels......6-2
Lester........6-5
Quintana...4-7
Darvish......2-3

Bottom Line: Hamels needs some help as he cannot
carry the entire rotation on his back.

Our starting pitching has been fine the past few years and is NOT the reason we have blown it. (but yes theo has made some horrible moves the past few years) Just think if we could have ditched schwarber happ and someone prospect for yelich :(

What I find more annoying is how few of our hitters are improving(probably more have gotten worse!). We can keep playing all the non maddon coaches, but he's about the only "coach" that has been around the whole time.

I REALLY hope that ass hat is done after this year! Yay, lets keep hitting schwarber lead off!! Good try schwarber-that was a good try with your stupid ass bunt strike out buddy, keep at it blah blah blah .
Get rid of the turd and hire someone who will actually hold guys accountable for their stupidity!

W/L is a pretty worthless stat imo.....
Not to say we don't need some of them to perform better

Wins and losses are important because the team with
the most wins in the NL Central Division will be in the
playoffs. Good pitchers will have good win-loss records.

Bottom LIne: Quintana and Darvish have losing records
which does not help the team win their division.

Do you really think schwarber would be batting leadoff if Theo didn’t approve?

Scherzer & degrom combine for a negative record, that certainly doesn't mean they are average or subpar......

Tony Barnette has been promoted from Des Moines after a rehab stint. He is another quality arm. With Kimbrel joining the team in a week or so, the bullpen is really shaping up. I’d still like to see Theo add another lefty, but there isn’t urgency to act.

This stat is a little baffling. I know Javy doesn't mind striking out but why are pitchers giving him anything to hit 0-2

Home runs after falling behind 0-2 in the count this year:

9 Javy Baez
9 Red Sox
9 Phillies
9 White Sox
8 Angels
7 Giants
6 Pirates
6 Marlins
5 Indians
5 Royals

I think it's two things:

1) He crushes mistakes. Sometimes pitchers try to be too fine and miss. He'll jump it because he rarely takes defensive swings.

2) He's a really good bad-ball hitter. He has enough power to all fields to take a pitch off the outside corner and drill it to RF or pick a ball up off his shoelaces to golf it out.

That's after falling behind 0-2.....he works the count back....it's not just 0-2 pitches he's hitting

Random thing that I probably should have known before, but I was listening to former Iowa FB player Anthony Herron on The Score yesterday, and as he did the post game show he interviewed David Schuster. Schuster said that Maddon will tell the players the line ups 3-4 days in advance. I thought that was odd, but supposedly a lot of managers do that these days.
I don't know why this is more helpful, than letting guys know the day before what the line up will be. To me, especially for bench players, it might be disheartening to see your name missing for 3-4 days.

Theo touched on this as part of the off-season overhaul. IIRC, some of the feedback he got from the players that it would be helpful to have more lead-time on lineup decisions. The point wasn't that it's etched in stone, but that it gave players more notice. If this was something the players wanted, I really have no issue with it....especially if there's some fluidity there and ability to ride a hot hand or steal a guy who is banged up a little extra rest.

The issue is does Joe override for a hot hand, or is he sticking to his script? It seems like to me he sticks to his script.

I think that's probably a big driver here. You get to see 3-5 days out what your playing time looks like and Joe is mostly on the hook for honoring it. I think he's mostly sticking to it, except in cases of injury.

Ah - I didn't see any clarification behind it but that makes more sense. Surprised more teams don't have more than that though. Either way, still quite impressive considering where he was two years ago (even last year really) at swinging at strikes out of the zone.

Magnificent rally by the Cubs in the 5th. The Cubs have been patient and took opposite field shots. It seems like such a rarity to see a five run inning without a home run (So far).

Death, taxes, and Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation selecting sample sizes that show Kyle Schwarber to be a star player.

Bottom line, Schwarber has played about 3 full MLB seasons and accumulated 7 WAR. He is what he is at this point...an okay MLB starting outfielder. There is upside with the power, but it's tough to see him turning a corner to become something great. His wRC+ is 101 this season, which is squarely average.

Part of the problem was that Theo declared him the next Big Papi in the Tom Verducci book, so the expectations are sky high.

Thanks, Lute.

He is what he is....and what he is is an above average hitter with pop. He's not going to be Babe Ruth, but he's cheap, cost-controlled and can hit. His career wRC+ is 111. A few weeks ago, he was at 89 for this season, so he's "regressing to the mean". I don't see any reason to think he'll end the season as anything other than an above average hitter.

He likely won't be a franchise cornerstone and he's probably not a guy you can trade for a huge return....but he's a pretty damn useful bat to have in the lineup.
