*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Nobody freaks out about Mastrobuoni anymore.
Jim DeShaies mentioned at the start last night that the Cubs had 5 bench players available. I could immediately think of Wisdom, Amaya, and PCA, but I actually couldn't think of the other 2. Had to do a search to come up with Canario and Young. That's 4 rookies out of 5. For a contender, that really doesn't sound like much IMO.

Mets doing us a big favor (lead Marlins 11-2), and can hopefully do another one later tonight with Senga on the mound. Sure wish we would have signed him instead of Taillon, although Jamo has been better lately.

Also, Reds losing 3-0 in the 4th, but D'backs have already won today, beating the Sox in Chicago.

At this point the 2nd wild card is gone with us still being 2 games back of the Dbacks even if we win tonight (I know standings will say 1 GB but with the tiebreaker it's 2 GB).

Ron Santo (RIP Ronnie) will be rolling over in his grave tonight rooting for the Mets!

I’m not sure Senga wanted to go anywhere but the Mets. He signed way faster than people expected and for less money than was projected. Seems like he didn’t shop himself around.

I think I would prefer the Cubs face the Brewers over the Phillies. More familiarity plus they really wouldn't have to travel. Phillies also have a lot more hitting to contend with.

Need to get there first, of course.

How did the Braves get 5 guys with 30+ HRs including 1 with 50+ and at least 1 with 40+? That's quite the lineup.

They’re a cult and the A’s gifted them Sean Murphy.

He’s a solid utility player. Earlier, the fans were casting him as Satan.
Not going to quibble with you, but I didn’t call him Satan. I just refused to learn his name and said he sucked.
He’s a nice bench player. Not the guy you need starting in the fight to make the playoffs.

With a blown save in the 9th. I just assumed the Cubs would lose after the game was tied 3-3. Taking the lead in the top of the 9th, still knew we'd lose. Now it's tied in the bottom and they have a runner on 2nd. Done.

Here's the thing, we can't take 2 of 3 from the Braves this time of year we aren't making it through the playoffs anyways.

The playoffs for the Cubs started September 1.

It is hard to believe we still have a chance at wild card as brutal as this collapse has been.

That in-game celebration seemed totally inappropriate as well. Delay of game big time and no repercussions.

Even if we sneak in (and that's a huge if), we will be out quickly. If we sneak in as the 3rd, we play Milwaukee. That would mean 5 in a row, maybe 6 if we can win a playoff game. Right now it's looking like we will have to win 5 out of 6 to advance.

Assuming Marlins hang on to win; gonna be tough to get in giving Miami has the tie breaker. Need a lot of help from Pit this weekend.

Agreed - but that’s what happens when A) you don’t really have a starting 3B and B) the 2 guys who sort of are your starting 3B have been on the shelf. That’s literally utility guy’s role.

Has Ross done enough to be back next year? He has made a lot of bone headed moves this year and this has been a pretty big collapse in September.
I think the collapse is largely at the feet of Hoyer and he’s even said as much. There were just not enough arms for this bullpen. They rode 4 guys until 2 of them broke, one of them is kind of broken and the other is gassed. All surrounded by young guys + Smyly.

I’m in a fragile, vulnerable place right now. Don’t talk sense to me. Tell me this in January as the roster comes together.

I’ve seen so many people on Twitter saying things like “Ross is an idiot, you just save Merryweather for the 9th and it’s over” or “Why did he put in that guy?” Or “Taillon should have pitched 8”….Ross just doesn’t have options right now. Some of it is his own doing for not being willing to sacrifice a few games in June/July in order to build more guys into trust roles, but there were no obvious plays out of the pen the last 2 days. Everyone is gassed or way inexperienced for these spots. You can absolutely go Luke Little, but he’s no lock to carve up the Braves when he’s shown some difficulties throwing strikes.

It's the damn bullpen.

The starting pitching and hitting is good enough to win the division.

The bullpen is mostly hot garbage - and cost them the last two nights. It needs a major overhaul in the offseason.
