Next series vs the brewers isn't do or die, but ya gotta think if they don't take 2 out of 3, the chance to win the division is likely over.
Disagree. If you win 3 of the next 4 series, you're still in it. Milwaukee has won 8 in a row, you think they can keep that pace? Slow and steady will win the race, unless the Brewers are other-worldly. They aren't, and have holes to be exploited.

One great thing the last few days is seeing all the home grown arms performing. Wicks, Assad, Alzolay, Steele, plus some skillful acquisitions. Merryweather was on the scrap heap for anyone to grab.

5 games back with 29 games to go seems like steep hill to climb. Obviously anything can happen but your room for error is a lot better leaving this series 3 games back as opposed to 5 games back.

I wouldn’t quite go that far, but if the Cubs were to get swept, then that puts a serious dent in things.

Also from BN, an update on several relievers. Burdi has been shutdown. I'd say he's done for as far as this season is concerned. Hughes is throwing BP in Arizona. Interesting note on Luke Little. I saw him on his one bad AAA outing in Des Moines a few weeks ago, but he's been pitching well, and has to go on the 40 man, or be at risk for being a rule 5 loss this Winter. He could be an interesting call up option.

The next ten games is brutal and crucial. Milwaukee, Cincy, and San Fran. All big games in solidifying a playoff berth. If they go sub 500 in the next ten it gets dicey.

I think bigger picture, usually. I get that it matters right now who they’re playing because of direct standings impact, but it’s 3rd wild card is probably 86 wins, division likely takes 88-90. Cubs are 69-61 and have 32 games left. I‘d actually go beyond SF because they play Arizona right after that for a 4-gamer, so that’s a 14-game stretch. Cubs need to finish 17-15 to get to 86 wins and 21-11 to get to 90. If they go 7-7 in the next 14, then they’d have to go 10-8/14-4, respectively in the last 18 - which includes 3 against Pittsburgh, 6 against Colorado and then ends with 3 in ATL and 3 in MIL.

It is so much fun watching baseball that matters in late August.

Obviously won't keep that pace, but their SP & bullpen generally keeps them from long losing streaks.

Is it just me or does it seem like the Cubs defense usually has a less than stellar game when Taillon pitches?
I’m pretty sure you’re right and I vaguely remember stats backing that up. He’s certainly been bad this year to say the least, but also randomly has had worse defense played behind him

I seem to recall some games when Morel and Wisdom would leave their gloves in the dugout. Swanson and Hoerner have been solid all season but they have cost a couple of runs tonight.

Why him and Morel never top prospects? They’re really good. I believe my first comment on Morel was that he’s handy but can he hit? Now it’s he can hit but can he find a fielding spot.
Assad wasn’t a top prospect because his stuff doesn’t wow anyone and it took him a good number of years to work his way up. He can get outs, though, as he’s showing. As for Morel, he was in the Cubs top 30 list when he got called up (I think different services had him between 17-21 in the Cubs system). It’s a good reminder that there’s not always a huge difference between #10 & #20 and you never know who is going to cash on an opportunity.
