*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

It’s all by overall record with the leagues mixed. Cubs are #20 in claim, but really only about 16 teams will be in play to claim these guys, so they’re effectively #7. Will be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Damnit....now I have to more reading....found a couple articles thar stated the originating league had priority.

Appears a team goes to the back of the line. As others have said, doubt any of the pitchers get to the cubs; but I have to imagine they may put a claim or 2 in. The end of the BP is pitching well; but could use another arm.
So, the Cubs might not have as high of selection priority than if they didn't waste a waiver claim on Uceta?

Strange times

That’s the complicating factor of the rule. Cubs are certainly not the only team that’s made a claim this year….and if you think you see someone you like, like Uceta, you may not want to just wait, assuming a dozen guys will be waived at the 11th hour. Either way, half the teams in baseball will skip on these guys waived yesterday just because they’re out of the race. There will be some at the top that may decide not to mess with their roster. Also may be the Cubs only have interest in 3-4 guys and wouldn’t get them anyway. We’ll find out tomorrow.

Japanese players are too polite. Your average American player would have lost his s*** on the called 3rd strike Suzuki got humped on.

Chicago Cubs Win GIF by MLB

Never a doubt

ALZOLAY shuts the door
Great 9th again by AA. But this game certainly demonstrates how important it is for the Cubs to have some more guys step up in the pen. Merryweather, Leiter and Alzolay have all easily hit career-highs for season appearances in their pro careers (not just MLB), so it is very uncertain how they are going to hold out. Second straight game in which the pen had to be lights-out, and Ross obviously had no one else he thought he could count on. After the day off tomorrow they have 14 games in 13 days; they're gonna need a lot more than 3 guys out to have quality appearances out of the bullpen.

There's a long list of guys who are candidates to step it up, but no one has yet to this point. It's not rational to assume that Boxberger is going to return and instantly be the guy he was during his Brewers years. Cubs have almost certainly put some waiver claims in. I guess we'll see.

Looking forward to the Friday double-header. Let's knock the Reds out of this for good.

If he is healthy I have a lot of confidence that Boxburger could be a very useful 7th inning guy. If he and/or Hughes come back it's going to be a huge lift for the bullpen.

I think Cuas is getting into the circle of trust, but obviously he’s down on bereavement leave now while Fulmer is also out. Having those two would make a big difference.

Is Keegan Thompson back/effective? Seemed to have a really good game against Pittsburgh the other day, but it was Pittsburgh.

That’s the only time he’s pitched back in Chicago. Impressive, but still TBD. He was really good lately at Iowa (last 4 outings). Much of the rest of his time down there was inconsistent.

Pitching wins championships. The Cubs with a pre-injury Stroman, '21-22 Boxberger, '22 Hughes, '22 Wesneski, June-July Fulmer and Cuas staying on top of his game would cruise to the postseason and be a really tough out.

Of course, there's probably a lot of teams that could make similar statements. Catching lightning in a bottle and having all your guys healthy and performing at their best in Sept-Oct is a trade secret that all teams would like to figure out.

SIAP, but hopefully we can get a healthy Stroman back for the playoffs (assuming we get there).
