*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Never a good sign when your starting pitcher is trending just minutes into the game.

FFS do I have to watch this @hawkifann ?

Sometimes you get beat. Taillon wasn’t terrible, but he got hit hard early and his D did him no favors (errors by Nico & Dansby in consecutive innings???). Miley is a ground ball machine and threw his game tonight. Jamo minimized the damage after the first (just a single unearned run), so he at least gave his offense a shot to come back. Team loss.

The team can quit and call the season over or they can come back and grind another game against Burnes tomorrow. The Cubs were never going to go 14-0 through MIL, CIN, SF, AZ, so get back to the grind and get tomorrow.

Top prospect means something...but not everything. After 6 years in the minors...being slow as they get, no power...just a decent BA most of the time....Wade Boggs got a chance in the show and sucked in limited action. If Carney Lansford had not gotten hurt...odds were he would have never gotten a shot at regular playing time.

Sometimes you do not know what ya got.

The Cubs went hitless with RISP last night, but, more incredibly, they never had any runners in scoring position. I guess that makes it easier just to write off this game as one of those unwinnable contests. Thankfully it was a Taillon start where the chance of winning was going to be low anyway and not one where the Cubs get an extremely well pitched game and still lose 1-0 or 2-1.

Assad wasn’t a top prospect because his stuff doesn’t wow anyone and it took him a good number of years to work his way up. He can get outs, though, as he’s showing. As for Morel, he was in the Cubs top 30 list when he got called up (I think different services had him between 17-21 in the Cubs system). It’s a good reminder that there’s not always a huge difference between #10 & #20 and you never know who is going to cash on an opportunity.
That’s how I remember too. CM wasn’t even top 15. He really hits the ball hard.

There are also some not-so-transparent reasons why guys may be lagging the prospect rankings. One factor is age. Assad isn’t old as a player, but like Steele, he got to a point where he was older than many of the guys he was playing in the minors. On the flip side, guys like PCA and others in the top 100 are often younger than the guys they’re playing against.

For position players, they factor defense in as well - guys who play middle infield or are CF-capable will tend to rise higher. Why? They’re often better athletically, but it also means they’re more versatile. If you’re capable of CF, then you can play all 3 IF. If you’re SS-capable, you could be 2B or 3B. Just means there’s a better chance for you to hit somewhere. Guys who don’t have a clear position (Morel) and guys who only play a corner (especially if that corner is 1B) tend to not be ranked quite as highly. That certainly doesn’t mean they can’t be great major leaguers, but if you look at the top 100s, you’re not going to see a ton of 1B on there.

BN is reporting that Anthony Kay is at Wrigley today. Soooo, who is going down/injured? Beyond sending Wesneski down, what move is there?
Also, 9/1 the rosters expand. I doubt they'd fly Kay in 2 days before roster expansion, but, maybe? Nah.

Angels placed some interesting players on waivers today.

What a bizzare situation and team. What player would want to be part of that?

Salary dump. Not sure any the Cubs might be interested in will make it through.

I did not realize the waiver wire rules changed four years ago...had to do some research. Not sure what the point of dumping a few million in salary and luxury tax will do...seems it can easily cost them that and more from empty seats over the rest of the year and fan dissatisfaction going into the next.

Considering every American League team comes before the Cubs...and then the contenders below us in the NL...highly doubtful any of them get through.

I swear the Brewers must have the best scouting report on how to position defensively against the Cubs. All hard hit balls are right at them.

The play by Turin and the missed ball four on Suzuki by the HP ump spell trouble for the Cubs.

Morel should be a great fielder, elite tools but his execution is poor. Love his love for the game and life. Easy to root for.
Catch 22 to some extent. Great athlete, but not great at any one place because he never locked into one place (and he’s not a naturally good OF), but the fact that he wasn’t good at any one place allowed him to float, relying on overall athleticism and his natural cannon.

It’s all by overall record with the leagues mixed. Cubs are #20 in claim, but really only about 16 teams will be in play to claim these guys, so they’re effectively #7. Will be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Is it the same with every player, or if a team selects a player, they then go to the back of the line? Or, could they conceivably pick player after player, after player?

Chicago Cubs Win GIF by MLB

That was playoff baseball, boys. I think both these teams make the postseason, and both would have a chance of knocking out one of the Big 2 and getting to the NLCS.

Appears a team goes to the back of the line. As others have said, doubt any of the pitchers get to the cubs; but I have to imagine they may put a claim or 2 in. The end of the BP is pitching well; but could use another arm.
