*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I see the Reds have claimed Hader from the Yanks and Renfroe from the Angels on waivers. Brewers have signed Josh Donaldson to a minor league contract. Also read that the Reds have released Trey Mancini after having signed him to a minor league contract about a week ago. Lots of movement.

Some of those guys have sucked ass, though.

Little seems like our best chance at having a good lefty for stretch run. No trust in Kay as he just can’t seem to locate and Hughes is a wild card at this point
If they add one more today, that player will be automatically eligible for post-season rosters. If they add one or both later, there’s still a path to the post-season roster, but they’ll have to justify it as an injury replacement.

The Cubs are reportedly calling up Shane Greene and Alexander Canario as rosters expand to 28 tomorrow.

I wonder if they plan on starting Greene on Tuesday against SF, when they'll need a spot-starter. Smyly, Kilian and Wes have done everything they can to not earn that honor.

Canario is finally completely healthy and tearing it up. Would love to see him have an impact this month.

Still one more 40-man spot to fill. PCA? Luke Little?
Would adding one of those two essentially mean that the team does not expect Boxberger to return? Or would they just place someone like Thompson, Rucker, Greene or Young on waivers if it came down to it?

Yeah, I read on BN or CI that, with at least 2 players on the 60-day IL that won't be returning this season, the Cubs basically could have 2 guys not on the 40-man on Aug 31st (but in the organization) on a postseason roster to "take the place" of those guys.

This is correct cause of people on the 60 day IL. They will be able to call up PCA (or anyone) in late September and have them on postseason roster

Have they announced the game 2 starter for tomorrow? That’s where I though he’d slide into.
Edit: Assad is listed as the game 2 starter tomorrow. Wicks in game 1. I thought they might try and squeeze 4-5 innings from Greene. To me he seems more like a long guy at this point, but that is what Thompson seems slated for.

Looking at the minor league recaps I see Boxburger threw again tonight. That’s 2 nights in a row. Usually that’s a solid sign the team thinks a guy is ready to return if they go back to back games with no discomfort.

Time to cheer on the Phillies as well this weekend. Here is to taking 3 of 4 (or all 4)from the Reds and the Brewers losing at 2 of 3 or getting swept by Philly.

I’d like the Reds to make the playoffs. Rooting for the Cubs to win the division then the three WC teams of Phillies, Reds & Giants (yes I know this would be a big collapse for the Brewers).

Tough choice. Remember the Cubs are chasing the Phillies, too. There is essentially no difference between the NL Central Champ and top NL wild card team in the postseason. Both would host a wild card series and then have to go up against one of the Big 2. At that point it's all about matchups and being the #3 seed might not necessarily be better than the #4. Also, Cubs have more control over catching the Brewers than they do the Phillies, since they have 3 games remaining against them. Just sayin'.

Could go either way. I'd imagine Young is next to go from the 40 unless Greene is bad.

FYI, Boxburger only hit 90 on the radar last night according to BN. Not sure that is going to translate into a promotion unless they see other things in his sessions.

Let's Play 2!

Cubs up 3-1 Top 6, no outs, runner on 2nd. Bellie already has 3 ribeyes on the day.
