Omaha Biliew

Biliew blew last night. 4 pts ,1 Reb, 1 TO, fouled out in 13 minutes of play. Sounds like a super star.
I don’t think this was surprising to most ISU fans; the Cyclone media here in the DSM metro has said all off-season he is currently about the 7-8th man due to needing more offensive development.

Billew showed off a ton of potential coming in off the bench. He also showed that he’s a true freshman and has problems avoiding fouling. His performance and playing time will gradually increase as the season rolls along. Offensively he’s decent but developing…defensively he’s a beast and he’s potentially a monster on the boards as well. Watching him play, the talent is obvious and he works SOOOO hard. He will be a major contributor by conference season. That said, he’s not starting because the guys ahead of him are VERY good players.

That said, Momcilovich might be the best looking Freshman I’ve ever seen at ISU. He’s an offense machine…strong, smooth, incredible shot from 3 with crafty inside moves to boot. He’s going to give other teams nightmares. Hands down the best ISU team since 2000.

Omaha will be fine. I also think he's in a tough situation because he's got a bunch of 6th year grown men ahead of him. When your biggest asset is your athletic ability that gets mitigated a bit by playing against a bunch of 24 year olds. It will be hard for him to get in a rhythm this season.

Jackson Paveletzke basically didn't play yesterday. Some guys just aren't going to play who are pretty decent players.

Not nearly as well coached, though.

Nothing quite like the mind of an Iowa State fan. Everything has to be proclaimed the best prior to the games.
One game against a nobody, cannot just say, might have a good team. 5 star recruit is just not good enough to play!
After last night's result, seems like this will be the worst team Izzo has had a Michigan State

Ya that's not close to being true, 2014-2017 and 2019 ISU teams all had better rosters than this year.

That's simply not correct. Those teams had solid rosters...just not as good as this 2023 bunch. Have you even seen them play? If not, you're just making absolute statements from a place of ignorance. I've seen virtually every ISU bball game and player for the past 35 years...and in many cases rewatched them. I get information at times from people inside the program...so when I say this is the best team since 2000...I may be wrong, but my opinion is based on a great deal of info.

That said, I'm happy to leave you fellas to your delusions...this Cyclone team will demonstrate exactly what I've said over the next few months. Enjoy the trip to Ames!

My opinion of the roster was formed well before last night's game...games against teams like Green Bay have no predictive value and are irrelevant to the opinion I gave you.

Not going to lie, I find it a bit funny that your first action after hearing the news that the highest ranked recruit in program history just committed to your team is to come on a Hawkeye message board.
Those Iowa State guys are lunatics and weirdos. Got to keep one eye open around them at all times IMO.

Thanks for the insight. The Big 12 will be a meat grinder. We could beat you in Ames but it would take an off night from you and a great night from us. It's also a rivalry game and its college basketball... one game doesn't really mean that mjch until tournament time.

I think Iowa St. will be pretty solid. I don't think your comments are far fetched. We will see how the season plays out.

Good and well reasoned post. Pretty much agree with everything you said.

Was certainly named Iowa Mr. Basketball as the best high school player in the state. Will see if that makes him the best basketball player at the college level. Recruiting rankings and US team representation went towards Omaha. I think Pryce is certainly more skilled at this point offensively, but probably doesn't have the athleticism tools Omaha brings to defense. I think it will be a fun year to watch college basketball in the state of Iowa this year, especially with this homegrown talent to watch.
Ehhh. You guys are always alright but neither you or us are winning anything of relevance this year. You all are in an endless and constant state of flux and your teams are entirely different each year, like, unrecognizable. It seems you all have 10 new faces each season honestly and the results are typically always about the same. Even if you all were really good, it's just for this one year and you aren't ever winning a title, just like us.

Meanwhile, as it pertains to us on the other hand, our players stay and we'll be what we typically are...Top 8 in the conference with hopes of a defense that never materializes. A fringe bubble team that will likely make it but, whelp, that's where the story ends. Same song and dance unfortunately.

I’d wait a few games before saying he’s the best freshman. I remember Jeff Grayer and Fred Hoiberg. But this new kid is exciting as hell. He does more than shoot.

I’m only sort of exaggerating - does Iowa State ever have a player for more than one year?

Oh, I remember those guys quite well. Heck, I remember Hercle Ivy. But there’s something genuinely special about this Momcilovich kid.

And Don Smith would have been in the picture if freshmen had been allowed to play back then.

I agree Momcilovich looks like the real deal. From the descriptions of him before the season started, I didn't expect him to start. Figured he would come in off the bench when we needed instant scoring. But he appears to be a well-rounded player.

As for best team ever, it's obviously far too early to make that assessment. The 2000 team will be hard to top, as will Fred's team that made the Sweet Sixteen without Niang, can't remember the year. Lost to eventual champion UConn in MSGM.

It is pretty impressive that someone so woefully unathletic can play in the NBA. He’s still a complete tool though.
you do know the Hawks were recruiting him and Fran really was hoping to get him.

Will ISU men’s hoops be better than Oklahoma this year?

@Lone Clone you’ve been around for awhile and this is totally off topic, but do remember Denny Nebbe? He walked on at Iowa State is the late 50’s/early 60’s. He has told be stories about a guy that played at ISU at the time from New York that was an incredible talent but his name escapes me. Denny is one helluva dude and still dribbles a basketball/shoots hoops everyday.
