After Michigan's performance last night could be a bad omen for the Hawks Friday night. Michigan could not hit their a** with both hands last night (and yes I know Louisville plays tough defense). Given our shortage of healthy players and Michigan's need/emotion to recover it could be really ugly for the Hawks Friday. Hope not, but not overly optimistic to say the least. JMO

Most every game in the Big10 will be tough. Michigan will be tough no doubt. I will be cheering on my beloved Hawkeyes.

If there was ever a time to play slow down ball, this would be it. Teske is a load for Garza with his length. Simpson vs. Touissant should be interesting to watch. I forecast Joe T. getting a T in this one.

Michigan is 4th in the country after dismantling top teams. Horrible matchup for Hawks. Teske is considered best big in the league...Luka must find a way to match up.
We need a shooting explosion from Jbo,CJ,Joe and gang to hang in there

This will be a very tough road game.....in order for the Hawks to be in the game I think they have to 1) limit turnovers 2) rebound well 3) shoot a good percentage, and last but not least 4) play decent defense or have Michigan have an off night shooting.

As to #4 above....watching games from the various tournaments/challenges around the country clearly playing good defense is vital to season long consistent success. However, it does not guarantee being able to stop individual players. There are a number of times you see players just go off...you see players where good defense is being played on them and yet they just shoot from further out, or hit tough shots with defenders in their face.....So, what that means to me:

Is that this game at Michigan we could have JBO, Joe W, or CJ go off....or a player we don't depend on for scoring creating all kinds of problems...Ryan K? OR Michigan could have one or more of their shooters get hot....

Fran's teams seemed to play pretty well against John B's Michigan teams, I don't know if Coach Howard has changed that system much? Regardless, I am looking forward to the game.

The Michigan I saw against Louisville didn't look a whole lot like the one I saw in the Bahamas. Yes, Louisville was better than ISU, Seton Hall and Gonzaga. But the Wolverines missed a lot of shots they should have made, and did make in the tournament.

when was the last time we won at Michigan?

I can remember a lot of ass kickings up there but cannot recall any victories.

The Sr. White and Sr. Uthoff/Mike G/Woodbury teams both beat them but those were very much rebuilding years for Michigan.

Fran has had a couple wins up there.

Iowa usually played well against UM under Beilein, whose teams weren't really physical, so the game flowed. I think it will be critical for Luka to stay out of foul trouble. If I were coaching UM, I would be challenging Luka early and often on the defensive end. GO HAWKS!

The Garza/Teske matchup when Iowa has the ball will be fun to watch.

Teske is the best defending big man in the conference and Garza is the best offensive big man in the league.

I think Iowa can hang around and maybe pull the upset if Fredrick is healthy. Hopefully, if Fredrick plays the rotation stays at 8 provided Patrick and Pemsl are still out.

Garza
Wieskamp
Fredrick
Bohannon
Connor
Touissant
Evelyn
Kriener

Did Michigan play over it's head in Atlantis? They had a decent squabble against Iowa St. Could the game in Louisville be an illustration of a team dropping back to the norm? I could see that coming. No way could they continue shooting the way they did in Atlantis. Someone mentioned Teske being the best big man in the conference. Sorry, I disagree. Almost every team will have trouble guarding/matching up with Garza. When you have post moves and touch like Luka has combined with his toughness and intensity, that's an issue for opposing teams. The good thing is JBo has had rest since the Syracuse game and Wieskamp looked healthy also. I think Iowa can keep it closer than some expect. Still, I think Michigan wins.

I said Teske was the best defensive big man in the league and he is, IMO. Other than Jalen Smith, you cant really argue anyone is better.

Agreed. Garza has been double and triple teamed down low all season so it will be interesting if Michigan lets Teske defend one-on-one. If Garza can get him in foul trouble and Frederick can play, I think we got a shot. Toussant's defense may be key. Nothing to lose, so we should be loose.

I think the past couple of years it seems to me that Teske has kind of muscled Garza around....he was clearly the stronger player. Luka however looks to have gotten much stronger since last year....hopefully that makes the difference.

I think Michigan's problems vs Louisville were multifactorial.

1) Michigan was probably a little gassed coming off 3 tough games in another country whereas Louisville hadn't played much recently and hadn't played a single tough team yet so had plenty of prep team to prepare for Michigan specifically.

2) Louisville is a really good team and it's tough winning on the road.

3) Michigan missed a few shots they normally make even allowing for Louisville's tough defense forcing tougher shots than normal.

4) Encouragingly, Michigan's defense remained elite even with relatively dead legs.

Mich plays two PG's together so CJ is likely going to be tasked with guarding Simspon.

Wieskamp has to know his matchup. Can't settle for jumpers against a guy longer than you, but slower.

The Teske-Garza matchup can swing either way and will have huge ramifications. Foul trouble for Teske last year killed them in IC.

Ah, my mistake. Yeah, I would probably agree. I also like Haarms from Purdue.

We make 10+ three's and we win.
possibly. Michigan's season high for 3s allowed is 8 to Houston Baptist in a game played at a crazy 86 possession pace. They rank 6th best nationally in allowing fewest 3 pt attempts (per total FGAs).

Umm. Uhh. No please?

We're not going to slow the pace. It's not in Fran's DNA and I'm fine w/that. Louisville did a great job of containing Simpson on the pick and roll. Got the ball out of his hands and he didn't have enough time on the shot clock to get it back and create. Not easy to fly down to the Bahamas and basically play 3 games that would be NCAA tournament games and then fly home and then have to fly back to Louisville to play the #1 team in the country. Would take one helluva an effort from the boys to win this game.

Iowa will need to shoot lights all the way out and play real good defense and we can beat michigan at michigan... tall task, I know but I’m saying there’s a chance!

Why? I don't like those 2 in there together at all. Notice how much more effective we were against Syracuse when we went small? That's a better defensive lineup for sure. Kreiner has his moments and I'm guessing with Pemsl out again he'll probably at times together w/Luka, but Michigan is so effective ball screening and such I"d rather go honestly w/Evelyn and Touissant more vs Kreiner. Playing the 2 bigs together against Michigan is a recipe for disaster on the defensive end in my opinion.

Last year Luka scored 19 on Teske and got hom in foul trouble. Oh, and didn't Iowa win?

that was in Iowa City. Based on how games get reffed home vs road that seems less likely in Ann Arbor. Garza was not nearly as effective against Teske in the BTT last season.

I was thinking the same thing re: Joey T. If he has any early success vs. Simpson and then Simpson gets some vet call, Joey will complain or be demonstrative in response or whatever and the T will be quick. Joey T already is wound up—I'm imagining he's super wound up already thinking about the Simpson matchup.

Kriener and Garza played a lot together against BIG opponents. They were very effective. Against 4 guard lineups not so much.
