On To Michigan

What's the chance that Iowa goes 1 for 10 from 3, as it turned out the difference in the last game against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament last March? Garza and Teske negated each other with about the same stats.

Iowa needs to pass the ball inside every possession. We need to play high percentage shots in the beginning and kick it out as the defense collapses. Garza needs over 20 points in order for Iowa to win.

Neither was Garza playing beside Cook. What's your point?

my point was outscoring him last season was not some miraculous accomplishment. And he's still not much of a scorer. He might be the best post defender in the country, though.

Was Teske that highly regarded last year? I don't follow the BiG, so forgive me if it's a stupid question because he made conference POY.

He (Teske) is a good player. Was just under 10 points a game last year, but Michigan had other guys who could score. Good defender and rebounder. Looks to be getting the ball more this year as part of the offense. Valuable player to have on any college team (duh), averaging a double-double this year.

Teske is a very solid player on both ends, but I believe Mike Watkins is probably the best post defender in the B1G IF he is healthy. He wasn't healthy last year. I haven't seen PSU play this year, but I think Watkins is back to 100%, and that is probably a big reason why PSU is having a lot more success.

Did Michigan play over it's head in Atlantis? They had a decent squabble against Iowa St. Could the game in Louisville be an illustration of a team dropping back to the norm? I could see that coming. No way could they continue shooting the way they did in Atlantis. Someone mentioned Teske being the best big man in the conference. Sorry, I disagree. Almost every team will have trouble guarding/matching up with Garza. When you have post moves and touch like Luka has combined with his toughness and intensity, that's an issue for opposing teams. The good thing is JBo has had rest since the Syracuse game and Wieskamp looked healthy also. I think Iowa can keep it closer than some expect. Still, I think Michigan wins.

I'm wondering where Michigan is at also. I think they're very good, and Atlantis showed them at their best. Somehow they went from just outside the top 25 to top 5 after last week, which is probably a bit of an overreaction to one good week. I have no info on Louisville this year other than what we've seen from them in previous years.

To an extent, playing consistently at the level they showed in the Bahamas is probably unsustainable. Simpson for example is a really good guard, but sometimes gets out of control and forgets to run the offense efficiently.

Kriener/Garza combo depends a lot of what Michigan tries to do to Iowa. I don't love playing them together a ton, as I think they clog up the lane for each other at times, but I think they're effective together on defense. Really hope CJ is able to go tonight, as otherwise JBo will need to go 30 minutes or more tonight and that's a tough ask of the guy, and I'd worry about him wearing down.

I watched Teske get his ass handed to him in Iowa city last year. By both Kriener and Garza. Blame the refs, blame home court, or blame parents I don’t care. Hope the Iowa players don’t get intimidated the way some on this board get. Most had us getting killed by Texas Tech even tho most those players weren’t even on Tech’s team last year. Michigan is a really good team. Speed teams like Ohio St will give us fits. Michigan is big with a great point guard. We match up pretty well with them. We have to control Simpson. I think we lose a close one. But we will be right there!!!

Teske last season had one of the best post defense seasons in the last decade of CBB. He gets blocks, but his value is in deterring people from even trying shots and missing the ones they take. Opponents tend to shoot dreadfully near the rim when he is in the game.

that was in Iowa City. Based on how games get reffed home vs road that seems less likely in Ann Arbor. Garza was not nearly as effective against Teske in the BTT last season.

Long time Iowa observers often wonder if Iowa ever has a home court advantage when it comes to the refs.

Teske fouled out in 13 minutes last season. Hard to draw much conclusion from the limited time he was out there when he got a whistle almost every time the ball entered the post.

having watched 35+ years of Big Ten basketball I can assure you they are getting a similar to whistle than everybody else. I mean it isn't Bob Knight prime Assembly Hall, but probably median for the league.

Garza was coming off major surgery all year, never really got back to full strength. He is a different player this year. Teske will have his hands full.

Yea.....Luka really is a different player....and so is Teske too..... but to date.....this below is impressive for Luka. Like JesusisKing already said and this demonstrates that imo....Luka today, is performing as tBest player in the league, not just the best big man. There is a reason they keep stats fellas...and scoring is a HUGE one and he is 3ppg ahead of the rest of the group. Luka is rebounding and his FG % is really good too...

Teske may shut Luka down tonight and UM may shut the whole Iowa team down based on UM is good, matchups, playing on the road and the fact Nunge is OUT, and it looks like Pemsl may be out too. I really hope CJ can play tonight because he is a damn good basketball player.....gives us a chance.

I am already resigning myself to be 0-1 after tonight but feel we will be 1-1 with a W on 12/9 at home against Minny. But let's play the game tonight and see what happens?

I like what I am seeing from this Iowa team so far.....they can knock down 3s collectively and Luka is scoring around 20 per game but you cannot lose any more players and need to stay healthy. All hands on deck and I'd love to get PMac back on the floor? He's talented and tall.

I know he is a good player. He really hurt Iowa State in the Bahamas. I wondered if he was an all-American whose name I should have recognized, because as I said, I don't follow the BiG all that closely.

The thing I recall most about that game was that both teams took 21 three-point shots. Michigan made 10. ISU made 5. .

The Garza/Teske matchup when Iowa has the ball will be fun to watch.

Teske is the best defending big man in the conference and Garza is the best offensive big man in the league.

I think Iowa can hang around and maybe pull the upset if Fredrick is healthy. Hopefully, if Fredrick plays the rotation stays at 8 provided Patrick and Pemsl are still out.

Garza
Wieskamp
Fredrick
Bohannon
Connor
Touissant
Evelyn
Kriener

Interesting question. When was the last time Fran played only 8 or less in a game? Foul trouble can dictate that at times, but Fran seems to be more comfortable playing a more extended rotation than a shorter one, although I don't usually see the hockey-esk line changes that Dr. Tom used to do so much of.

Teske fouled out in 13 minutes last season. Hard to draw much conclusion from the limited time he was out there when he got a whistle almost every time the ball entered the post.

Wrong, if you foul out in 13 minutes it directly says you got your ass handed to you. Not a big deal. I have had people I couldn’t guard. I tip my hat to them and tell my teammates to watch for this or that.

Ah, wasn't able to watch that game as I was travelling for work this week. Having happened in the last game could make it more likely than normal this game, although the attacking style Michigan uses may dictate using more players to offset foul trouble. Will be interesting to see the % of time Iowa uses zone vs. man-to-man D. If Michigan shoots like they did in the Bahamas, that will likely dictate more man-to-man, but if they shoot like vs. Lousville, potentially more zone.

Dont get me wrong, it was only 8 guys because Fredrick, Nunge, Pemsl and Patrick were all out vs Syracuse. My hope with Fredrick coming back tonight, and assuming that Pemsl and Patrick will still be out, is Fran keeps it at 8 and doesnt play Till like he had to against Syracuse.

Would've like to have won the game tonight but at least the plus one Garza thoughts over Teske in this thread proved block m and a few others wrong......

Like I said....Garza is tBEST player in the league and he is only a junior and only going to keep gettnig better......see Big Blue in IC on 1/17.....

Offensively great...but maybe the worst defensive play in the BIG. Got embarrassed in simple pick n roll defense all night.

Garza is not the best player in the conference.

Yes he is.......wake me up when another player scores 40 on the road against a quality team like Big Blue in Chrysler.....with a 7 footer like Teske matching up and a couple of other bigs like Teske off the bench...didn't you read what Blockm said about how good Teske has gotten?

Luka's performance tonight was Meg Gustafson like.....remember her?? Unstoppable....should've been at the line to get to 50.....a few shots rimmed in and out too......he is only going to get better too - inside/outside. That's what Luka does.....

And oh...btw.....nobody played good D tonight.....

If you would have said best offensive player I may agree with that.

It's just about tonight with Luka and his defense. He isn't the best player in the conference but he is really good. No shame in that.

No shame in feeling this either Cool about Luka......but I will say, Luka was playing on a bad ankle he twisted in the Cuse game and per Luka he wasn't even sure he was going to be able to play but did and got through the game when the adrenaline started flowing....didn't know this until I heard the interview.

Wow...playing a D-1 basketball game on both ends of the floor against comp like Big Blue in their friendly confines is tough enough on two healthy ankles let alone on one good one and one not so good one....do you get the risk factor(s)?...there are many against Luka in this game but the guy was a warrior still...

That's what MVPs are really all about....he puts a wounded team, a depleted roster - acl, hips, back, quad, meds to help treat a problem, a not as talented team on his back and almost gets the win....again, wow,

Also, Michigan's D sucked too and Teske's D put him on the bench for much of the game. We need Luka on the floor and not on the bench in foul trouble. Teske for UM, not so much. And there is a stat they talked about in the Cuse game where Luka has been able to manage this and avoid foul trouble.

At the end of the day.... an L is an L and our 12 point loss to UM is no worse or better than the other 7 teams that lost to them like highly ranked Gonzaga - 18 pts or UNC - 11 pts on a neutral court too. Heck, Appalachian State should feel pretty good...they only lost to Big Blue by 8 points.....in Ann Arbor.

Blue will be back in IC on 1/17...if healthy enough, we will return the favor and get the W back.

proved me wrong? Garza scored roughly 1 PPP against Teske last night which is better than most, but by no means a super efficient performance. I mean he had a great game overall and totally abused Livers and Castleton and Davis, but Teske made him take a ton of shots to get the points he got when they were locked up.

Teske's synergy numbers from last season and this are still off the charts for post defense.

Hats off to Garza for the monster game. He's a talented kid.

Garza is one tough hombre and a very good BB player....he needs some help.

Ya got a good team there Blockm for sure....I already knew what this team was walking into Ann Arbor and I am just happy for a 12 pt loss on the road against a good team compared to the 32 pt loss of the Nitty Lions against the Buckeyes today in Columbus. 106-74 And the Lions had been looking pretty good to me and I think they are but crap happens on the road in the B1G.

The Bucks shot 14-26 54% from the 3-pt line and big man Wesson was 4 of 6 of those shots....58% FG. Dang....but a 12 pt road loss against your team tells me something that's not bad at all. I just hope we can stay healthy because today, we are not.

I see your team travels to Columbus on 2/4.....we'll see how your boys play on the road and see you in IC on 1/17.

He made Teske look bad last night. The rest of the Hawks did little to help Garza with scoring or defending.
