OT: Dolphins vs Chiefs on Peacock exclusively; fans and others outraged

Having multiple options, and having to pay for them, is here now and the continued trajectory in the near term. In the long term, who knows.
Anecdotally, the family and friends that I know who are under 40 don't really care about live TV much. The traditional networks (abc, cbs, nbc) are complete dinosaurs to them. Completely irrelevant to their entertainment habits. They consider things like espn about on a historic par with events in the roman coliseum. Us old farts have enough money and spending power that broadcast media of all types will be chasing our dollars for a while yet. When the millennials become the old farts that may not be so.

I don't like all the streaming services I have to sign up for to get all I want but view it pretty much like groceries...they have all went up a lot so I shop for deals on streaming services(like 19.99 a year for peacock) just like I do with food. Things aren't changing anytime soon.

Will never subscribe to Peacock. Ever. I'll go without ever watching a sporting event again if I have to.

I'm tired of things that used to be free now requiring paying for. "But it's only $8"! Sure. $8 here. $15 there. Another $5 for this, and $20 for that. When will it end? Not to mention the subscriptions going up almost every year.

And no, this isn't an old man yelling at cloud thing. It is getting beyond ridiculous.

I don't care if "that's the way it's going". It's wrong.
While I’m in agreement and not liking it, my point was people whining when they’re paying 8$ a day at Starbucks for a double mocha latte…

Currently paying $2/mo for Peacock Premium. Gotta watch for the bargains.

This is simply the future of TV. Instead of free TV with commercials and limited offerings, there are practically unlimited offerings that you pay for .... and commercials.

And it's going to get more expensive, and more "good stuff" will require a subscription.
If this is the future of TV then the future is not going to work out very well for these companies. "Streaming is the future", yet all these streaming services seem to be losing billions. If they are so great, and the future, then why are they losing billions? So the future will be that everything people like will go behind a these paywalls and if you want to watch it you'll have to pay up to see it. In the end we all lose. You can see where this is headed...the sport of boxing.

Well, they're not all losing billions; Peacock is. NBC is clearly using their streaming service as a loss leader, though I question the sanity of the tactic. Regardless, I don't see Comcast declaring bankruptcy any time soon.

Amazon Prime Video seems to be moderately profitable, but again, their streaming service is a hook into a larger subscription service.

Netflix, Hulu, and Apple TV are all quite profitable.

I read this last night. Peacock/nbc paid $110 million to do this. Sucks pretty bad when people will have to pay or at least sign up for a trial to watch this game. By contract the two teams' local markets have the game on over the air tv.

There were comments in the article where people are hoping the ratings are terrible.

I just think to put a playoff game of the top rated sport in America on a separate pay channel is just way off in serving your fans.

Anyone going to sign up to peacock to watch this game. Pay a month and cancel for one game.
I hate it.

Really hoping that the ratings are just trash for this game, when compared to all the others.

It's like they forget that they can charge big bucks for ads when they hit large audiences over a national NBC broadcast. Instead putting it on Peacock for fewer viewers and ad revenue.

Probably put some sitcom re-runs on NBC. LOL

NBC paid like $120 million to air the game on peacock. I doubt the league will take a large hit over it.

These are all tests balloons for the eventual move to streaming for leagues. MLB already does it with some baseball games, other sports are on streaming too. It's really not a big deal and people losing their crap are either crazy poor or crazy old.

Peacock is pulling the money grab taking advantage of the Swifties being new NFL fans. They’re hoping a ton of them will get the subscription to see Tay Tay and Kelce.

No…we don’t like paying extra for things that have been “free” for generations.

We have had peacock for a few months for hawks and watching a couple of other shows. For most of us it aint the money but the effing stupid decision to not have this game on over the air. The Dophins chiefs game is one of only two games on this Saturday, Why is it on the Cock when there are 3 networks who could put it on.

Is it a test to see how many new subscribers they will get and what ratings and eyeball numbers will watch. The article I read said Peacock is losing money
NBC is great at this.

It's all a money grab, like usual. I reluctantly signed up for peacock for January knowing the women had several games on it this month. I will cancel the end of the month. It ticks a guy off they do this
People have to pay money to go see a game in person. We should probably get used to the idea of paying to see games on TV.

They bought this game to place on Peacock in May 2023, looooooooong before the season or the matchup was decided.

Getting nickel and dimed does suck, but don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

We had the college kid buy a year at the college student rate of $24 when Iowa had a football game on Peacock. It had already been announced that there would be 7 Iowa womens hoops games on Peacock, so a year sub made sense for us.

I may check out the KC playoff game, but having to go specifically to Peacock app instead of flipping channels makes it less likely. I actually think the services are starting to like that the pain of switching causes most people to just leave the game on the whole time, with no flipping.

Well the business model was broadcast networks signed up to televise sports and other shows based on how many viewers they thought they could get to watch. That drove the sales people to find advertisers and based the Ad rates on varying level of viewership.

So the viewer didnt pay money to watch over the air but they paid with their time having to watch commercials.

But now they want you to pay to watch steaming content and with sports there is still the commericals. Dont tell me this is better.

I and many of us have paid to watch close circuit TV sports events with NO commericals. Totally different with the pay per view.

It could work out, fans love watching bad weather games.

Arrowhead Stadium is going to be freezing on Saturday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Miami Dolphins in their wild-card matchup on Saturday night in what could be one of the coldest games in NFL history.

The high on Saturday in Kansas City is only expected to be 11 degrees during the day. It’s expected to be about 0 degrees by the time the game kicks off at 7 p.m. local time, and it’s expected to dip well into the negative temperatures once the sun sets. The posted low as of Tuesday night is forecasted at -5 degrees on Saturday night, and the high for Sunday is set for -1 degrees.

With winds expected anywhere from 10 to 15 miles per hour on Saturday night, it’ll likely feel much colder.

I believe they bought “a game” and had a say in which one they got. Could be wrong

This article from 5/16/2023 has the exact game:

The Wall Street Journal's sources say NBCUniversal paid $110 million for the rights to air one of the coveted 13 NFL playoff games. The service's exclusive game will be in the prime time slot on Saturday, January 13, making it one of the round 1 "Wild Card" matchups. Naturally, we don't know which teams are playing yet, but the two team's local markets will see the playoff game simulcast on the local NBC affiliate. Only the national viewers will have to deal with Peacock.

The game will be available on NBC in those markets. For the whiners just give up your damn 8$ dollar a day Starbucks and subscribe to peacock for 8$ A MONTH.
You're mixed up here. The people whining about Peacock are the ones still paying $200/month for cable or Dish. The $8 latte crowd are all sharing streaming subscriptions and will be watching the Chefs without issue.

In time people will select 1-2 streamers that have the most interest to them.

I like Peacock for the Tour De France and Premier League. Worth it for me

As a Dolphins fan, I quote Walt Jr:

Couldn’t agree more.

It isn't anyone's god given right to see the NFL's product. It is their choice to put it on a streaming service and our choice to buy it or not. Probably a good move for the NFL as the future of TV will be streaming and not linear TV has we know it.

Why does everyone assume this? That ain't happenin, chief.

It's a shame one can't really browse and discover things anymore. Everyone is getting silo'd into specialist interests.

It’s sort of the inevitable pendulum swing from “why do I have to pay for all these cable channels I never watch?”

Pretty dumb and hopefully the ratings do suck. If I decide to watch the game I’ll just use my brother’s login that I used to watch the iowa football game as well.
He probably forgot he still has peacock

I mean we had two football games on Peacock, so this stuff shouldn't take people by surprise.

I will say though that the complaints about putting a big playoff game behind a paywall/streaming service are warranted, and just because people make the excuse "well it's just the way things are now" doesn't make it right, or even remotely suggest that this is how it should continue to be...................just sayin.

I personally am f***ing tired of people telling me "well that's just the way it is now" as an excuse to rationalize the stupid shit that the people of this world do and justify doing.

The playoff aspect is definitely unique here. Will be interesting to see over the long term if doing this with play off games is actually beneficial for the league. A playoff game on Prime might be a little different, as Thursday night games have already been exclusively there for a while. I see both sides of this - there’s no inherent right to see games for “free”, but yet that’s exactly how playoff football has been for decades, so it’s a big change.
