Penn St Match Thread

Not even a token stall call against PSU, which Star and Kerk both deserved (though it wouldn't have changed the outcome of either match). Haines not getting hit was the most egregious

8 stall calls on Iowa, 0 on penn state lol
Good ol fashioned home cooking. I was shocked when Warner got stall called for dean lounging on him for two minutes pretending to turn him… college wrestling is officially dead and boring when you allow this.

You not knowing wrestling isn't an insult, it's a fact. There's nothing wrong with not knowing wrestling. There's something wrong with not knowing wrestling, but arrogantly spouting off dumbass comments on a rival fanbases wrestling board.
I’m 39 now and been around wrestling as a wrestler, coach, and ref for 34 years. Pretty lackluster wrestler, but rather successful as coach and highly rated as ref. I’m confident I know enough about the sport to say, quit fn whining about a call that doesn’t go your way. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Good first half. Very disappointed in the back half. Really thought Cass would figure out that ride. Same one that swamped him during the all star match. I’m not sure he can beat Kirk now without creating a little chaos.

We didn't do enough to win but they have the stall ride down to a science...and then NEVER get called for it. Exactly where were the efforts to turn from Star, Dean or Kerk. They just laid on top and collected RT
For tonight, I agree. But we need to do a better job. That said, I'm impressed with what I saw tonight. I didn't have a warm fuzzy about Cass or Warner, but loved that Murin and Kennedy got the Ws. That was huge. PSU is not unbeatable.

He won't. Kerk can win that type of match over and over.

I hope you didn't ref anything beyond middle school or high school JV.

My fear is that PSU will turn the tables on some of those close losses, and Haines will continue to trend up, in March. I have Jaydin and Kem PTSD

Cass has won the throw situations every time. Unless you mean Kirk can control him enough that Cass won’t be able to get on deep and attempt a throw?
I mean he won't beat him in the type of match the last two have been. He needs to find some way to create chaos.

J.R. never calls Iowa opponents for stalling. Doesn't matter if on the road, at Carver, or in tourney. Hawk could run opponent off the mat and out of the arena, and J.R. would call "action." Or hit the Hawk for stalling for "pushing" opponent off mat. Has ALWAYS been this way. Tonight was typical J.R. Whenever I see J.R. or Angel, I know we'll have to beat two opponents.

Maybe I’m too invested but Kemerer losing to that douche in the finals still emotional scars me
That was probably the one loss I hated the most. Love Kem and hate that he was riddled by injuries most of his college time. He's the kind of wrestler, along with Lee, that we need to keep on our team to improve our offense in the room and on the mat under the big lights. I hate this handfighting and do nothing style, unless it serves a purpose (such as the case with Brands tonight). I don't think Nelson could have won, but like Teske he could have got caught trying more than he's capable of in a big time dual. That said, the rest of the time (when not completely outclassed by your opponent when we're going against Penn State), I want to see these guys open up like Lee does now and like Kem always did. I would love to see PK get there, and of course Woods is already there. Love our guys, but I want some freaking action!! :)

Is he the one that called Stoll for stalling when he had double unders and the guy backed off the mat?

I'm with you my friend! We need our guys to keep improving, which is why I want to see more senior level 157 and heavier talent in our room. I feel like we keep bringing back Iowa guys who were themselves boring wrestlers instead of spending a few dollars to bring in some of those guys who kicked our asses. I don't want inbreeding; I want us to keep moving forward, changing and adapting as we go...and I think that takes some fresh personalities, perspectives and techniques.

It’s amazing how this dual brings out a ton of less to NO knowledgeable Iowa fans. If you blast Iowa for this performance on the road against the CLEAR #1 team in the country you are a MORAN!

125: Lee teched a very strong kid who solely was avoiding pinning combos and the ref helped him do that.

133: Teske kept it close with a clearly superior opponent and tried to WIN at the end vs. simply stalling out for the decision loss. Almost any other time he would get blasted if he didn’t try at the end. Morans…

141: Woods wrestled a very smart, tactical match against a guy who is very good at keeping it close with anyone.

149: Murin deserves the same props as Woods.

157: Siebrecht was all the way in a match with a blue chip recruit that many PSU fans are as high on or higher as Nickal or Nolf.

165: Kennedy outwrestled another top 5 recruit that just beat Amine. Ask Alex about Amine.

174: Brands wrestled his ASS OFF against another superior opponent and had him running at the end

184: A backup kept it to a tech giving up 20 lbs and multiple NCAA championships.

197: Dean is simply a slightly better version of Warner. Neither are special in neutral. Both are really tough on the mat, but Dean is a bit tougher and stronger on top.

285: Kerk has simply found the game plan for Cass. Control his wrists, keep him at a distance and off the ties and he will beat him every time with superior speed and athleticism.

Simply put, Iowa truly wrestled the best they could have against a truly great opponent on the road. Watching this dual I actually think Iowa is closer to PSU than I thought they were. PSU still wins NCAA’s by 20 or so, but Iowa is the CLEAR #2 behind possibly a top 10 team of all time in PSU…
