Prohm OUT At Iowa State

Meh. Downside is they might land somebody competent....

Hoiberg has a $10M buy out.

Smith and DeVries were listed in the Odds-On Favorites category.

Moser, Altman, Beilein and Matta were all in the "Kick the Tires" category which the writer defined as: (Potential home run hires I think are worthy of at least a phone call to gauge their interest in the job. If they say no, they say no. If the interest is mutual, they immediately move into tier one.)

The phrase long shot was not even in the article. Did you read the article?
I equate the kick the tires to long shot based on that definition. There was also a bunch of assistants and other mid major coaches on the list. I think if Hoiberg wants to go back to ISU then it will happen regardless of the buyout, idk if he does though. I could see Devries going to ISU, don't think he will be in line for any other high major jobs this year.

To this point the only high major openings are Indiana, Minnesota, ISU i believr right? That's not a lot of openings so i don't think any mid major coach can be ruled out.

Otz has a losing record at UNLV.

sounds like a perfect fit.
Apparently, according to a long time Las Vegas media person who knows the program well, not only would UNLV not put up a fuss if Otz wants to leave, they will also help him pack and load the moving van.

Would love to be a fly on the wall for Pollards sale pitch to donors. “Yep it is my job to hire the right coach and I have mucked that up with Football, Wrestling and now Basketball coaches. But hey now it is your job to give me millions of dollars so I can try and fix my latest mistake.”

Brilliant
Pollard’s successes at Ames have far outweighed his failures there.
Pollard a pretty successful AD in America today., As Gary Koch once famously said...” better than most”...

Take this for what it’s worth but I was listening to local Des Moines sports show last week. They were recalling an interview they watched, involving a Las Vegas near writer or Mountain West beat writer (sorry, can’t recall)

But the discussion was around this guy and his opinion of Otz out in UNLV. Said he’s one of the worst X’s & O’s coaches in the entire league.

He was a key member of Fred’s staff and a hell of a recruiter. But maybe he’s not all that in terms of coaching?

have Jamie and Fred patched up their "misunderstandings" from the last go round?

He's gotten the opportunity to hire more coaches than a lot of AD's get. But he's done a great job brain washing the fans into thinking they are relevant, so they've made some money. I'll give him credit for Campbell. After several failures, he got one right. He's an annoying, whiny, little turd, but the clone fans worship him. So I guess it works.

I have no idea what you are saying...I do love me some Hawkeyes, though...and I still wouldn’t fire any coach based on this year’s performances...read carefully what I said.

LOL. Organizations have to make tough decisions even in pandemic years. Those decisions are complex. Everyone does not get a free pass. That's reality. Stop listening to the la la land faries flying around you.

He’s a fund raiser too., the improvement to their FB facility has been impressive...

Basketball hires: Greg McDermott, Fred Hoiberg, Steve Prohm

Football hires: Gene Chizik, "So Proud," and Matt Campbell

That's 2/6 who've been successful at Iowa State. And counting Hoiberg would be like Fran taking a victory lap for landing a Top 100 senior by the name of McCaffery.

C'mon, man.

The Hoiberg hire took some balls considering he had no prior coaching experience. That is a definite win for Pollard.

Make changes with the existing players? Expect transfers. Maybe Foster will leave.

Hoiberg was a real good hire...as was Campbell...Fred knew what he was doing and got players for his system. For the life of me, why Freddy went to the Bulls is a puzzlement to me...but maybe There is a little “Ron Johnson” in all of us....I believe though that even bring the basketball coach at Nebby is better than being the coach if the Bulls.

You think so? If it didn't work out, no one was going to hold it against Pollard for giving the Mayor a shot. Every ISU fan loved the hire from the start. Every one of them.

Rumor is Hoiberg hated Pollard. That's why he left.

Both these guys are pragmatic enough to put aside stuff, I think. Jaime has boosters to appease. I have heard from some that this deal has been a point of discussion for a month or so. It will be interesting to hear the rumors coming out of Indiana this next week or so...things are “hush hush” right now, but for how long?

That is why it is a possibility again BnG...Freddy is a low risk hire and with a couple of players, you can cure an ailing Bb program quickly.

How can you call it low risk when it comes with a 10M buyout that Hoiberg has in his Nebraska contract? That is a huge amount of risk.

It's great fodder for message board speculation and bantering. That's for sure.

I think so. If Hoiberg doesnt work out, that may have been Pollard's last coaching hire at ISU.

He had hired Chizik, Rhoads, McDermott and Jackson so far and 3 out of the 4 were disasters. Rhoads had football winning 6 or so games per year at that point.

Well, I think that's the point. If you're down to your last bullet, hiring the native son gives you a little more latitude than say some upstart coach from Murray State.

Pollard's greatest accomplishment was facilities upgrades using the Big 12 tv contract money. Then again... the football complex was below average, so anything was an improvement. When he was hired in 05/06?, I think he was using ISU as a trail run to improve his chances of succeeding Alvarez at Wisconsin. Since it looks like Barry may outlive us all... maybe he's a "lifer" at ISU.

I agree with those that say this hire will depend on how much $$$ the boosters are willing to spend. I imagine we'll know in the next 7-10 days.

I watch a lot of basketball and that includes Moo U. I think the players played hard for Prohm, they just weren't very good. Their bigs never progressed to be consistently good and this year's freshmen, who the clown fans crowed about, just didn't make any difference. His most recent transfers were up and down and really, Bolton was the only guy you could count on. Also, it always seemed as though at a critical point in the games, Prohm would either make or not make a baffling decision that would hurt their chances for victory. And the bottom line is Prohm has had some serious talent that he just didn't do enough with before they went pro.

I wonder if Tyrese Hunter, a well thought of PG, will reopen his recruiting. Don't believe we were interested in him for some reason.

@PHawkKenyon I saw you sent out something about Horner getting a chance at ISU? I haven’t followed him too closely, what type of results is he getting at Truman State?
They were top 5 in D2 all season. One win away from the Elite Eight currently. Horner can coach. But he’ll need to climb the ladder. But he’ll be a high major coach at some point IMO.

Covid or no Covid, 2-22 is inexcusable and 0 conference wins.

This. I'm not downplaying Covid, but I see the pandemic used by a lot of people as an excuse for this or that, down to the little things like the dealership being "unable" to provide complimentary car washes because of the pandemic.

It's not like ISU was the only team trying to play ball during a pandemic. Everyone else was playing under the same circumstances, more or less, so it was a level playing field. Some teams had longer pauses than others - some had none - though it didn't seem to bother Michigan too much.

This past season for ISU is inexcusable. No coach should survive that. Especially when that makes 3 losing seasons out of the last 4.
