Prohm OUT At Iowa State

If I were in a position to hire and fire a coach right now...I would pass right now. I think this year has been just too bizarre not to give a guy I chose in the first place another chance. But that is me.....and I am retired and honestly, dont give a shit one way ot the other.

This is he dumbest excuse in the book.... ISU, Minny and Indiana weren't the only teams that had to deal with the Pandemic... Guess what, Drake had to deal with the pandemic and Darian DeVries put up a monster season... Luka Garza had to deal with it too and he put up another All-American season.... It's when times are rough, when you really see if a person has what it takes

ISU also went 12-20 last year. How many passes should Prohm get because *checking notes* Hilton! and Covid! You’re weird, dude

We wont consider the fact that ISU's biggest asset (Hilton) was basically nullified this season with reduced attendance.....and again, you're much more aggressive and demanding of your people than I.....that is probably why you are highly successful and I am just flunking along cashing checks. If I were an AD, I would give my coaches in BB and FB a pass...with a definite understanding for the next season...and you would fire your guy.

The thing is, every team is in the same boat. It's not like only Iowa State had no fans. His teams got progressively worse, and quickly. When your team doesn't compete very hard, the decision is pretty much made for the AD. Prohm may be a good guy, probably is. He's not a good coach, at least at the Power 5 level. He succeeded for a time with Fred's players, but it went downhill quickly after that. I would have understood had Pollard given him 1 more year, but really no indication it would have got any better next year.

Have to admit, even with that trainwreck of a season I didn't think they'd cut him loose. How's that choice looking now, X?

Hard to think they'll chase Freddie, they'd have to write a pretty big check to cover Prohm's buyout, Fred's out payment and his new contract. Not to mention the optics of Hoiberg leaving Debbie after only 2 seasons.
Sounds like some at Debbie would like to see Fred gone. For ISU fans, most are very leery of bringing Fred back.

Sukup will be opening and Albaugh will be opening up their checkbooks
What good is that when you have an AD that only hits on 1 of 3 coaching hires. For all the hype ISU fans give Pollard... he's made an awful lot of questionable hires. He's the guy that hired Kevin Jackson after letting Cael get away, hired Rhoads, hired Gene Chizek, hired McDermott, etc. And that not even considering if Dresser is going to get them back to relevance in wrestling.

Pollard will figure out a way to screw this up.

Fortunately, their fan base is dumber than a box of rocks and they're content that the football program doesn't suck for now. Fans in Ames only need to see a good season every decade or so to be content.

All Im saying is with the situation this year, I would NOT have fired a coach for wins or losses.....especially if he was "my" coach" like Prohm......I would have high expectations for next season however.....

You didnt change my mind.

UNLV HC seems to be a possibility. Pollard going cheap? TJ not exactly "lighting it up" in Vegas.

The guy was 12-15 this year at UNLV. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I have heard that it all depends whom gets Jaime's ear and opens their checkbook.......I have heard this is just a matter of time before it happens.....
You are correct CeMar....a lot of ISU folks would orgasm if The Mayor comes home....again. I heard this idea has been bantied about for several weeks now.
(And for the record, this might be the first time CaMar and I ever saw along the the same plane at the same time.....about anything. We will both now have to reconsider our positions.)

I hope devries stays and builds something at drake. Not likely but it would be neat
DeVries stays at Drake. No need to walk into a situation like they have at UMinn. Not now. Twin Cities are a "professional town" and UM ain't shit in that market. There are other jobs that will open in the future. DeVries can grease his resume in DSM a few more years....

Hoiberg can leverage this into a contract extension because Moos is already feeling the heat on the football HC.

Hoiberg knows the boosters probably don't trust Moos to make another bad hire.

This last year has been fun for Hawk fans that hate our rivals. Illinois/Minnesota/ISU all firing guys and the Huskers drowning in criticism for current horrible HCs.

Meanwhile... Hawkeye Athletics enjoying success in all the four major sports.

would’ve you fired a coach or not after this year? From you posting the same thing 10x I can’t tell for sure where you stand on this.....

guy went 0-19 vs big 12 competition. Pandemic or not tells you all you need to know.

Nope. Still would let him have one more......after all, he was "your guy" and like Trump says, "loyalty" means something. But unlike Trump, I believes it goes 2 ways......

My personal opinion..and you didnt change it....1st degree Murder is inexcusable.....losing basketball games is not.
I would never fire a coach based on this past season....everyone gets a free pass.
Well it's not really a "free" pass when coaches are getting paid millions of dollars and athletic departments are struggling. Might as well try to get someone competent with all that money.

Prohm's seat was warm with a lot of ISU fans before this season, laying an absolute egg like he did this year would get u fired from coaching an AAU team.

Then you would be fired right along with the coach. I cannot imagine going to my boss after failing to do any of my duties over the last year or two and saying well everything has just been really bizarre but you should keep me around and keep paying me multi millions to run the program into the ground

There are only 2 major college sports, lets be real

Jaime has a lot of “capital” at ISU...he has made many tough decisions and most have been quite positive. I’m s sure he did what he thought best...and I think there well might be a reason he did so...the “season” gave him the excuse to do it.
However, understand, if it was mine to make, I would not fire a coach because of their season based on this year...doesn’t mean I wouldn’t fire them...but not for the season they had this year.

Is there a more pathetic excuse for a member of the "media" than Chris Williams?

Legit saying he will have to consider not covering the basketball program if Otz gets the job because they are close friends.

I agree with you....but this wasn't a one-year deal. Last season was very disappointing, and some fans argue that he under-achieved with the players he inherited from Fred. Of the five starters on his first ISU team, four are currently playing in the NBA and the fifth is in the G League.

JFC, look at this list. As I have said before, ISU hired the HC at Murray State the last time their job was open and they had a top 10 team coming back, fan engagement at an all time high and their football program was down in the dumps. Now football is a good program and their roster is one of the worst in all of major conference basketball.

Hoiberg
Otz
Smith
DeVries
Moser
Altman
Beilein
Matta

Well, a lot of schools sure feel differently than you about firing coaches during the pandemic.....

It was time. Pollard + ISU could not afford another bad season. Prohm seems like a good guy, but the bottom line is winning basketball games. We can debate all day long about how good of a coach he is, but winning two tourney titles is a noteworthy accomplishment. Some very good Big 12 coaches have never won a tourney title.

It will be interesting to see who they hire. A home run hire is needed right now to re-energize the fan base. ISU is still a really good job. I hope they can get a young P5 assistant. No idea who that may be. I hope Hoiberg doesn't return though. Highly unlikely.

Prohm represented ISU well. I wish him well.

Would love to be a fly on the wall for Pollards sale pitch to donors. “Yep it is my job to hire the right coach and I have mucked that up with Football, Wrestling and now Basketball coaches. But hey now it is your job to give me millions of dollars so I can try and fix my latest mistake.”

Brilliant

The only one on that list that seems crazy is Altman. The others all either have ISU connections, are at mid majors, or are currently unemployed. And to be fair most of them were listed in the Longshot category

Hoiberg is a pipe dream.

Otz will probably get the job (fingers crossed).

Smith just signed an extension less than a month ago.

There has not been anything signaling DeVries has interest in the ISU job.

Moser will have better opportunities.

Altman, Beilein and Matta.....LOL!

Idk if Hoiberg is a pipe dream or not but again.. the others were all listed as long shots which is exactly what they are so not sure what you are attacking.

Hoiberg has a $10M buy out.

Smith and DeVries were listed in the Odds-On Favorites category.

Moser, Altman, Beilein and Matta were all in the "Kick the Tires" category which the writer defined as: (Potential home run hires I think are worthy of at least a phone call to gauge their interest in the job. If they say no, they say no. If the interest is mutual, they immediately move into tier one.)

The phrase long shot was not even in the article. Did you read the article?
