Remaining Targets for 2018

Well, for starters, he's got offers from 3 of the top FCS programs in the country, which means the kid can play. He's also excellent on special teams and seems to be very good playing a variety of positions on defense. Not sure about his pass coverage, think he needs some work there. He's probably gonna take a few years to contribute on defense, but kids like that can make an impact on special teams almost right away. All in all, a good 11th hour find for the staff and it's hard to ignore the successes they've had with guys like that.

Or, ya know, Kirk sucks and can't recruit and blah, blah, blah.

Plus his high school coach said he was a leader on the team as a freshman. And other intangibles which Reese Morgan saw, and we should trust Coach Morgan on this.

Calling people retarded and stupid because they don't agree with you. Nice touch.

Calling out 17 year old young men because of the number of stars behind their name. Tough guy!

You will have a much better life if you decide to start following Alabama or Ohio State. Might server you better. Urban and Nick seem more like your kinda guys.

Looking at this whole thing from a "glass half-full" perspective, we should love the fact that our staff takes the time to thoroughly evaluate and find diamonds in the rough.

A lot of staffs don't.

It's allowed us to have Sanders, Greenway, Jewell...

Do we know that Benson will become a name on this list? No. But, I think it's safe to say, there will be future names to add to the list.

ChuckThomas seems a bit salty. Probably a hawk fan that thought we were going to win the National Championship back in 2015 or 2009. But here is a little reality Chuck, Iowa missed on their LB recruits this year. It is not like they did not try. Hey there is also still time to get more that did not sign! Do not be so short sighted man.

Also Iowa is a young team and has a lot coming back next year besides their LBS. I remember in 2016, 2015 and 2014 when people were upset with LB play...... well when those guys developed and got time they turned into pretty darn good players in 2017. Patience is something you need to understand. Look at the 2017, 2016, 2015 LB class.... those guys are the ones that will play next year, not the fresh high school 2018 class..... Those players include:

2015 class has Jack Hockeday on roster I think
2016 class has Welch, Jones, Neimann, Taylor on roster
2017 class has Colbert and Weiland as athletes that could play the LB spot
2018 class has Craddieth S/LB, Doyle and Benson

There are 3 LB spots on the team with 10 spots or players not including walk ons. so in reality those players that we took like Doyle and Benson will probably be red shirted or 3 string.....

Basically, RELAX dude recruiting happens like this

We got a lot of other good guys this cycle, 36th rated class so far, 40th last year, 42 in 2016. you say we are good at developing. WE are not in the 50s anymore like in the 2015 cycle. 3 cycles in a row we are low 40s and moving up. Hit on 2 or 3 more guys that we target as top priority and we will be a top 25 program for a few years in a row. Then keep building. the data suggests that Kirk is working harder than he was before with the way the classes have shaped up the last 3 years. Now he needs to find away to get into the low 30s. Then the low 20s and so on and so forth.

Perspective is a wonderful thing Chuck!

Also looking at the data, we are due to go on a run here in 2018-2019 with the classes we have had in a row with 42,40,36. This is only the 2nd time we have consistently had that in the last 18-19 years of Kirk being a head coach. That comes from finding a quality staff, finding a way to fundraise for new facilities, and lastly winning big games in 2015 (12-0) 2016 (Michigan and Nebraska) 2017 (Penn State....so close and OSU beatdown).

Now Kirk needs to win the big games. If we have a 2018 class that is top 30 and a 2019 class that is top 30 then that will be a new thing of consistency in the Kirk era. Things are not as bad as they seem to be. 2013-2015 saw classes in the high 50s..... That means we will be middle of the pack a lot. higher classes mean we are going to see more winning. the data suggests that! you just have to go look at it and dissect it a little more to see it.

Agreed. Dillon Doyle and Seth Benson leave a lot to be desired. I’m sure the Kirk worshippers will disagree and anoint both the next Josey Jewell, but it sure would have been nice to aim a bit higher here. Especially considering our history with cranking out quality LBers.

Oh well.
What is your goal? Do you want people to start getting angry about something like you? Do you not want any positive opinions or hope that the recruits become something for Iowa? You’ve been at this for a full page and multiple threads, so you obviously have some agenda. All I can see is you want people to be down on the recruits.

The reality is no matter your opinions they’re already signed. No matter how mad about it you get it’s not going to change. Why not just hope for the best, and if they don’t turn out how we hope, then we hope for better next year.

If you want recruiting to ‘get better’, fine I get that. Bashing currently signed recruits isn’t going to achieve that goal. It’s also a weird time to get mad at recruiting at Iowa has a significant upgrade this year compared to previous years recruiting.

As far as you saying they’re developmental and not ready to contribute right away, of course that’s true. Why is that a bad thing? That’s pretty much all of Iowa recruiting. It’s worked out well more times than it hasn’t. So again, I don’t see the point of bashing two kids that as you put it ‘didn’t have many power 5 offers’. They got Iowa offers, lets let them get to the program before we complain.

If you’re still not happy, you can always root for a different team. It’s really not hard, just do everything you do for Iowa but instead do it for your new team.

If you think this class needs another impact LB, the offer list shows 2 uncommitted FL LBs.

OLB Andrew Chatfield 4* 6'1" 214 Plantation, FL
ILB James Miller 3* 6'2" 220 Seffner, FL

Looks like Chatfield took an Oklahoma visit in November.

Was looking at the offer list this am, specifically at the guys who did not sign anywhere yet. Saw the LB's listed above and a couple of decent WR's still available.
Michael Thompson may still be interested. DT certainly not a top area of need but would take him in a heartbeat.
Wonder where we sit with any of these guys. Anyone with any inside knowledge?

McDonald put up very solid numbers on his AAAAAAA state championship squad. Looks like he had about 5 forced fumbles including 2 returned for tds. Good speedy playmaker. Good ability in pass coverage.

"Speedy" is a term I am hoping we start regularly using to describe our Leo. I think that is what has been discussed with bringing down a safety. I like that we are keeping the bar set on mid level 3s that have not committed instead of more 2 star projects.

This guy has damn near the exact same measurables as Noah Fant. If we are going to run a "patriots" offense with outstanding tight ends you would think they would need the next Noah this class or next. A game doesn't go by where he isn't talked about as a mismatch.
Leonard Taylor had a visit scheduled a week before the early signing period if I recall, but we got a verbal from Waggoner and Taylor’s visit was cancelled. I think he has been to Iowa City a few times. He looks like a hell of an athlete, I just don’t know if we are still interested.

Are you thinking we were looking at him as a DE? I was thinking TE.

Hey, Chuckles - Dillon Doyle is the hardest hitter in Iowa high school football this year. This is the same thing they said about Josey 5 year’s ago. He has good size and is a workout warrior. I am not betting against him.

Benson was the guy coach Morgan was selling to the staff. You can make an all-star team out of these guys that Morgan finds at the end of the recruiting cycle. Almost everyone of them has been a multiple year starter. Our starting DLine in 2015 consisted of 3 guys who played 8 man football. All of whom were passed over by everyone. Drew Ott, Nate Meyers and Bazata.

I may need some help here, guys, not that Chucky boy deserves it, for the last-minute finds by coach Morgan: Brett Greenwood, Brandon Myers, the 3 guys named above, Tyler Sash (edit - I was wrong on Tyler) another safety named Tanner Miller from Kalona who started for 3 years, IIRC, Josey Jewell, and others. Not to mention these Iowa Kids who come in as walk-in’s, like Boone Myers, Cole Croston (who was a legacy but no one else wanted him), Drake Kulick.

That would include this kid from Clinton that Morgan was begging for, but Ferentz and the other coaches passed on about 7 or 8 year’s ago - some hack by the name of David Johnson.

You are right - Greenwood was a walk-on, but Morgan found him. 3 year starter.

Sash didn’t get an offer until Ferentz went to see him play basketball for Osky. IIRC, it was a January basketball game, which seems pretty late to me. IIRC he dominated that game with 31 points and a bunch of rebounds, steals and assists.

Sash committed to Iowa in August right before his senior year.

Ok - I give on Tyler Sash. I have edited his name in my original post. His name was not the point of my initial post. It was more about all the other last-minute finds coach Morgan comes up with. Alan Reisner was another name. Riley McCarron was another walk-on find.

I think something the staff should consider would be taking on a guy like this, assuming you can find one that makes grades. He isn't getting looked at because he is too little but supposedly he runs a 4.39. Turn him into a punt/kick return specialist. It's a scholly that would actually impact the team, if you don't have a ton of guys you can flip, and you put a premium on feild position.

So far the only new offer I can find that has been extended is the linebacker committed to rutgers.

One has to take crystal ball predictions with a grain of salt but I am seeing alot of moving and shaking in the predictions..... none of which involve Iowa. :(

Looks like we are out of the running for DT prospect Michael Thompson. Unfortunately, Lil Debbie may have a small chance. Oh well, I'll take Linderbaum any day!
