Saturdays game against Penn St., strengths, weaknesses, who you got...

And Teske was a great defender according to MI fans. How'd that turn out?

;)

Teske played 23 minutes that night because of foul trouble, hard to pin all of Garza's big night on him.

Watkins only plays about 23 minutes per game but averaged 3.5 blocks per game and under 2 fouls per game. That is over 6 blocks per 40 minutes.

I know it'll be a pro-PSU crowd, but how were ticket sales handled in this game? Were PSU fans given first opportunity to purchase them, or was it open to the public from the outset? I've got to imagine we'd have a pretty solid alumni base in the NYC/Philly corridor that would be interested in attending this game, right? Again, I know it'll be pro-PSU, but I guess I'm hoping that we'll at least be able to hear the Hawk fans when we make some runs in this game.

Honestly, let's just avoid one of those blowout road losses that we typically experience more than a few times each conference season. Keep it competitive and maybe we can pull one out at the very end?

Watkins doesn't play 40 minutes. And he hasn't played against Garza this year. That's what I'm saying. Garza is relentless. Watkins might block him but Garza will score on Watkins. Repeatedly.

Ya dont say?

I put that in there to show what type of production 3.5 blocks in only 23 minutes per game looks like.

And I said he doesn't play 40 minutes because you extrapolated it out to that.

Can you read or are you just being obtuse?
I can read. Do you know what extrapolate means?

Look, I just mean that he has some games where he is able to dominate smaller opponent. He did have 4 blocks against Iowa last year. But how many were of Garza's shots? Watkins had 11 pts and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes. Garza had 22 and 11, and no blocks, but Iowa won.

Another fact - of the 12 3 pt shots made, 10 were made by Bohannon, Moss, and Maishe Dailey. The other 2? By Ryan Kriener:) I think 3 pt shooting will be a bigger factor.

I won't be surprised if psu wins, but I'll be disappointed if the Hawks don't keep it close right to the end.
If Stevens goes off and Watkins can slow down Luka just enough, I think psu takes it. Hoping that hot perimeter shooting from CJF and Wieskamp can keep Iowa in it. Maybe Bakari will be a wild card again like he was against Cincy?

There’s been a lot of discussion about the matchup with Penn States big men Mike Watkins and Lemar Stevens. Stevens is a pre season all Big Ten pick and Watkins is a mountain of a man down low. I went back to last year’s game and looked at the matchup of the four big men in that matchup. I’ll let you guess which player had which stats?

Player A

Field goals. 9-17
3 point FG. 0-2
Rebounds. 12
Points. 22
Assists. 0
Minutes 30

Player B

Field goals. 6-8
3 point FG. 2-3
Rebounds. 3
Points. 15
Assists. 5
Minutes. 21

Player C

Field goals. 4-18
3point FG. 0-5
Rebounds. 8
Points. 8
Assists. 4
Minutes. 37

Player D

Field goals. 5-5
3 point FG. 0-0
Rebounds. 11
Points. 11
Assists. 2
Minutes. 26

Go ahead and make your guesses:

Player:

A?
B?
C?
D?
Alright, I'll play, I'm assuming the four options are Cook, Stevens, Garza, Watkins; so if you're including others this is a silly question.

I'll guess A is Cook - 17 shots, 0-2 from 3 in about 30 minutes sounds right.
I'll guess B is Watkins - I think he was foul prone last year, which would explain the 21 minutes, but a solid production line
I'll guess C is Stevens - 37 minutes, and he was definitely one of their best players last year
I'll guess D leaves Garza, which seems about right, scoring, rebounding, not many assists in 26 minutes.

It's kind of a trick question because Cook was out for the PSU game last year. Kriener got 15 and Garza had 22 and 12

I think a big factor is if we can keep Luka out of foul trouble and get someone to help him out down low. Watkins and Stevens will be a big test.
I thought that myself. The zebras may have Luka's destiny in their hands. With Luka's moves down low, I really believe he could give Mike Watkins fits. We know they will collapse on him when he gets the ball. Can he react quickly and get it to the shooters outside? I want Joe T to drop some dimes and draw some fouls on his drives. We have to be locked in on defense, share the ball as we have, and for Pete's sake hit our free throws.

I bought mine through UPenn several months ago.

Also I mentioned this in the lounge but I ended up not being able to attend so I sold my tickets on stubhub for 4x face value.

I wouldn't miss this game if I lived within 100 miles. Never been there. I just love the old arenas and the Palestra is practically a basketball museum.

You will report back, right?

Glad the game is in Philly and not State College. Both teams will have to adjust to playing in a unfamiliar arena.

Not really. Psu is familiar with the palestra. Played there before. The philly players all played there in HS. Stevens and Watkins could walk there from home.
