Season Realistically Over

Where ya goin if he comes and stinks it up? Back to Marco and the triple option Academy type offense? Do you think Lester is just another puppet in a long line of puppets?
Sullivan can run. We haven’t seen him pass in an Iowa uniform. Cade can’t run and he really can’t pass. What’s the worst thing that can happen?

Number two in wins behind only Hayes, but yeah, Kirk’s a loser.
Well, he is the biggest loser in B1G history as well. That's a fact. He's lost more than any other coach in the conference has.

I get what you're saying but yes, in reality, this loss is a continued buildup of the seasons prior, that's all I was saying.

Where did I say that was going to happen? Iowa's defense is certainly good enough to beat Ohio State. They were the last time they played them too. The problem is on offense. Obviously the offense isn't close to being able to compete on that level but we'll see if they get better. I don't have a lot of faith that they will, but I want to give the new coaches a chance.
Iowas defense was awful in the second half this week

We're talking about Iowa's offense and the QB room here. What do you think?
If Iowa does not have a QB that can play at least as well or better than a banged-up Cade, they should all be sent packing along with the persons that recruited them.

No, I’m saying there are many holes. Secondary is not close to the units of the last decade. 20ppg from this offense is going to yield a .500 record. This is not a defense built to keep games in the teens. Iowa state isn’t likely all that good.
You're right, 20 points per game and they will be lucky to be .500. But for some reason you seem to think the defense isn't going to get any better which would be contrary to every defense that Phil Parker has ever lead at Iowa. Will they be as good as last year? Probably not, they don't have Cooper DeJean this year. But they certainly can still be very good. They just have to get coached up.

At this point it’s time to play Sullivan. These next two seasons, with Iowa’s tough schedule, they will have to put up points to even be at .500. It’s time to go with the future.
That weak gift of a schedule should save it as ususal. Those teams are so bad they find a way to lose. Imagine having to play Michigan's schedule lol
The key is getting an weak bowl game, not something like Tennessee to get embarrassed again.

C'mon bro, Michigan won the natty last year. They just reload and go, right?

This program consistently gets about 7-8 wins every year. That might not be enough to get in the playoffs. Even with the expansion, I never in my wildest dreams thought this team was a contender.

Does this mean you somehow think we might get IN to the playoffs with 8 wins?

Huh?

Back to the OP. It does feel like the season is over. This was the year to make a run at the playoff. They blew it. KFz isn't getting close again. The roster takes a big hit after this year
This post absolutely hits the nail on the head. This season represents Kirk's last stand at having national relevance and exposure. Getting older I don't get caught up in the ups and downs as I used to. But Saturday pissed me off because we have reached the end of an era regardless of how long Kirk rides out the rest of his contract.

come on guys: did you watch the hawks last year? last 25 years? you thought, putting all this evidence together, that THIS was the year to make a run at a national champ game? really?

just look at michigan and texas and washington last year. maybe alabama and georgia and for goodness sakes Ohio St lately... last few years. Then Look At This Team. Take a moment here. Look at the coach. Iowa fans have got to be realistic.

I think they were just hoping to make the playoffs

Could Sullivan be worse?
Cade was 5-18 for 26 yards in the last three quarters, with two interceptions. I think Resar could put up better numbers and he can run. I think Sullivan should get at least two series in the first half this week to see what he can do.

Concurred. I was hopeful. Still am that our offense will improve for this season.
I think our offense has really improved since Brian left. Iowa State is a damn good defense, even if their linebackers are banged up, and we gashed them on the ground. Our quarterback play was just dreadful.

I think we, myself very much included, got too excited after our first games second half. Last week's game was a reminder that we're still in a rebuild offensively much to our dismay. The hope is that we will continue to improve because we have a new OC. The concern, as always, is the scheme offensively being too impacted by KF. So, I'm hopeful, but will lowered expectations more resembling what I had at the beginning of the season again where I just want to see continued improvement.

My concern is that it's been a few years since our line has played at an exceptional level with relative consistency. I'm hoping that changes for the better again but it's becoming more evident by the years we aren't the same OL factory we once were, at least, not to me.

It matters if we go 10-2 or 2-10.

It matters if we get Floyd back.

It matters if we get to Indy or not.

It matters if we beat OSU.

It matters if we beat Nebby.

It matters if we win a bowl game.

What really matters is if Kirk et al teach the players to try to do their best, no matter what has already happened.
This. The reality is, the only reasons Iowa had a chance to get into the playoff was an elite defense , elite special teams, and a favorable schedule.

We now know the defense is not elite, the special teams are not either. The offense has not drastically improved. The playoffs were never a reality. Good to pop that bubble early and refocus on what IS winnable.

7.5 is KF's favorite number...again

Mark is absolutely right. The problem to all of those things resides in the offense improving.

Iowa State is likely the 2nd best offense Iowa will face this year...and Iowa held them to just 20 hard fought points. This may not be quite the disaster many of you seem to think it is.

Further, the Iowa running game is VERY strong. Iowa State's D has been top 2-3 in the B12 the past few years and this year's bunch may be the best yet. Your running back is flat out great...he'll be a pro. You have a good TE and a solid OL. Just need a LITTLE bit better play calling and for the QB to get a few games under his belt coming back from a pretty serious injury.

The sky is not falling for Iowa.
