Season Realistically Over

Iowa State is likely the 2nd best offense Iowa will face this year...and Iowa held them to just 20 hard fought points. This may not be quite the disaster many of you seem to think it is.

Further, the Iowa running game is VERY strong. Iowa State's D has been top 2-3 in the B12 the past few years and this year's bunch may be the best yet. Your running back is flat out great...he'll be a pro. You have a good TE and a solid OL. Just need a LITTLE bit better play calling and for the QB to get a few games under his belt coming back from a pretty serious injury.

The sky is not falling for Iowa.
None of us are really worried about the defense. Literally everyone in the country that watches football knows what our problems are, and have been, regardless of how certain fans try to spin it on here. Doesn't take watching more than a quarter of an Iowa game to figure it out.

Well, statistically we’ve got 10 more games. But anyone who might have been thinking playoffs probably got an expectation adjustment.
This.

It can still be a great year. I think in addition to expectation adjustment, it’s helpful for “the playoffs or bust” fans of any FBS team to consider that the playoffs aren’t purely a playoff. They are a loose hybrid of an invitational tournament and a “playoff.”

Some conference winners with automatic bids (“playoff”), and a committee that issues invitations to complete the brackets (subjective).

Either way, 10-2, 11-1, without a conference championship, a team can get hosed subjectively. Worth celebrating a good season, if it happens, regardless.

That all sounds like hopeful projection

Last year Iowa sucked and was big ten west champs
You don't suck when you have an elite defense and high quality special teams like we do. We just have a ceiling because of the offense that makes it hard to compete with upper echelon teams. The challenge for Lester moving forward becomes valuing offense as much as we do the other two phases of the game.

When you score zero points against ranked teams “you suck” enters the conversation. It’s impossible to win scoring zero points. Doesn’t matter if you give up 2 points or 56. You can’t win.

Part of the team sucked, while other parts of it were outstanding. That's the maddening part. How can a "tenured legend" of a coach allow that to happen. It's not that one department was stronger than another...that's normal. It's that 2 departments were excellent and one functioned like it was being run by a bunch of drunken homeless people.

I think our offense has really improved since Brian left. Iowa State is a damn good defense, even if their linebackers are banged up, and we gashed them on the ground. Our quarterback play was just dreadful.
The way this past game went, when we played a half-decent team, was exactly how I thought it would go. Whenever we play a team that is average or better, Ferentz Fs it up, or the quarterback does. I just hope we can make it through this game without a major injury on the o line or defense.

I agree the D has been great but the scoreboard is what matters ultimately and the O drags everybody down, unfortunately. I am not sold on lester yet, too new. if the O starts scoring like 30-40 points a game all of a sudden, I will be the first to come here on this site and say it's great. I don't think KF puts a product on the field year in and year out which is designed for 30-40 points a game anywho, so it's probably not worth dreaming about. 25 pts might be a stretch

I hate it when we embarrass ourselves in high profile games like the end of last season. Makes us look like a worse team than what we had. I do think with Lester we will have fewer of those ugly scoreless games. The running game looks much better already. We have a ways to go to compete with the big boys especially with the way Kirk likes to play.

The hawks have the ability to beat every Big 10 team on their schedule with OSU being a low probability.

Wisky just lost the QB, Minny doesnt have a great running game yet, MSU might be tougher than I thought but hawks can do it.

If the hawks were to go 8-1 in the Big 10 then they might be in the Big Champ game again
