SIAP: from Athlon, what other coaches think of Ferentz...

Except decline in attendance is not just an Iowa thing. Times are changing and the sport is being over exposed in my opinion just as the NFL is. Back in the day a game or two would be on tv, now they all are and you can get 24/7 news if you wish. It is just too much and people get complacent. Just stay home and watch on tv out of any weather and crowds and traffic, etc.
That is a very fair critique ... and that is also why live-TV money is so huge. My wife will religiously watch games - but she's just as happy to watch it on the tube. There is an increasing number of folks out there who view it as more convenient to watch games on TV as opposed to going to games in-person. I wonder if the advent of really big-screen TVs has been instrumental to that.

Golden's performance was puzzling ... because what he accomplished at Temple was pretty phenomenal. However, while at Miami - you have to deal with the attitude that guys cop when they're at Miami. You see a similar attitude at any school that views itself as a "named" program ... there's a little more of culture of entitlement. Any coach that is at such a place needs to know how to manage and manipulate guys who demonstrate such attitudes. Some folks ... like the Pete Carolls of the world ... are quite good at it. Others, maybe those a little more like Ferentz ... they're not as good at it. Of course, that's also probably part of the reason why Ferentz recruits the guys he does.

I've always said a big part of coaching at a blue blood program that's loaded with 4 and 5 stars is just managing egos. I get the strong impression that's not Kirk's forte which is why he works hard to get recruits that exhibit a more blue collar mentality. They might be more work to develop, but in general they're much easier to manage.

I also think Kirk's a teacher by nature and wants eager students, not kids who think they already know it all or who just want to ride their natural ability.

I'd say that how the record varies about 8-4 is as much a function of injuries and attrition as it is a function of the schedule. In 2016, the Hawks lost to NDSU ... but, in that game, 2 of our best O-linemen were also out with injury. Given that our OL almost always has a bit of a transition period at the start of seasons ... any breaks in personnel continuity tends to impact the O that much more.

Yep. Look at 2009 as a case in point. The conference schedule that year was pretty brutal yet the results were well above average.

TV is far more convenient....easy bathroom access, cheap and plentiful snacks, nice, roomy, comfortable seat. What could be better, right? I love all that, but I hate not being in Kinnick for a game. We were just driving by Kinnick last night with the (grown up) kids. My daughter said "There's your favorite place in the world Dad.". She wasn't far off.....

Understandably so. Even though I live out of state ... I've still managed to get back for some of the games through the years that were so special that the fans rushed the field. Even thinking back about it gives me goosebumps. Thus, I can understand your affinity for Kinnick ... it really is a special place!

.’ There are about a 120-something coaches (in FBS) envious of his situation."

translation: There are about 120-something other ADs that wonder how Barta got (and keeps) that job.

Translation: When that Iowa job comes open someday quality coaches will be lining up for it because it is a place where you can be successful yet have job security.
