State College Booing Spencer pre-match showed a total lack of class!

Can you update the board on how Carvers standing ovations were for Zain, Nolf, or Bo? Kinda silly to think Carver would've given one of those guys a standing ovation. I wouldn't expect it in any way shape or form for those guys. Why would I give a 3 time national champ for an opposing team a standing ovation?
The reason the Iowa fans gave Steveson a standing ovation was for his Olympic Gold.
Just adding some clarification.

I could care less if they boo him or not and really whether Iowa or anyone else has fans that boo people is not even a question. All fan bases do this. Mcpat pointing out times Iowa fans were booing people is missing the point. The actual point and what Iowa did for Steveson was to give an ovation recognizing his excellence in his final appearance. They have the wrestling intellect to recognize and honor greatness. If PSU fans don't have the ability to honor a great wrestler even if it's not on their team so be it. Maybe they don't think he is great, who knows and who cares. Considering the multitude of serious injuries that Spencer has had to endure the level of dominance he has shown has been nothing short of amazing. Even with all those injuries he absolutely has been the most dominant Iowa wrestler I have seen.

This is not meant as some sneaky dig at Spencer, but Gable was on a whole different level. He had won an Olympic Gold Medal. That transcends team allegiances, and the fans could appreciate that. Nothing Spencer has done really approaches that.

Really? I wouldn’t say he is modest, but that’s an opinion. No one at CHA gave Bo, Ruth, Zain or Nolf an ovation. They all also were three time champs- which to this point, is all Spencer is.
Well, SL IS from PA, eh? He grew up in that state. Repped PA until college..

That really seems odd to me. He's had exceptional wrestlers at every other weight.
Just one of those things. I’m sure Karl would like to improve at that weight. But it’s tough to get the best 125’s in the country when Iowa appears ready, willing and able to go all-out recruiting that particular weight.

Of course. I hope he does amazing things for team USA. But so far, despite being an insanely dominant wrestler, he really hasn’t done anything transcendent.

But as I said, the boos were unwarranted I thought.

Point being? There are PA kids wrestling all over the country. He was wrestling for Iowa at Penn State. He is not an Olympic Gold medalist. He has done nothing (yet) that multiple PSU wrestlers haven’t already done. And no one expected any other fan base to cheer for PSU 3-timers

I sat right next to F*** st fans with my brother(both HUGE IOWA fans) and we had great conversation and some good joking with each other.
Just curious. Did you call them F*** St fans while you were having this nice conversation with them? Or maybe called them pedos and then had a beer together?

I think el-W was pointing to there being some hostility from some people based on a feeling of having been spurned . . . not a big deal to most if just a “regular” PA guy, but a top-of-the-line PA guy turning down PSU is extra frustrating (possibly personal) for some.

To that hypothetical point, I don’t doubt it is some people’s reason to boo, but when you pack 15-16k people into an arena on a Friday night w/ #1 vs. #2, there is going to be a variety of personalities, BA/V levels, and behaviors. So, it’s all predictable.

Spot on re: Gable vs. wrestlers with only HS & college credentials.

Of course, the boos didn’t bother Spencer. That’s not the point.

Some of us are just a little tired of Iowa getting blasted on social media for no good reason. They were painted as the villain after the skirmish after the Iowa State meet last year, when Iowa State clearly provoked it. There was a thread at the top of this board for more than a week about a possible racial slur yelled at Austin Gomez in Carver last year, possibly by one idiot in a crowd of 15,000. These are just two examples. Of course, there are many more cases of Iowa getting slammed by Penn State trolls and other fools on social media without any basis. And Penn State fans are always among the first to pile on.

Here we have a factual case of disappointing behavior by Penn State fans, similar to the way they abused Spencer after his loss in the state finals, although not nearly as bad. That was an absolutely ugly scene. It’s nice to see some light shining on some truth about Penn State, but in this case, based on irrefutable facts. To be fair, we probably should keep this thread at the top of the board for at least the next week.
Or we could create a thread titled “As the Nitwit Lions Turn”.
It would be really cool in a childish sort of way. We could post to the thread anytime we wanted to feel superior by making snide comments & ripping on another program’s athletes, fans & coaches.

They’re program has been dominant for over a decade and oddly they still need validation. They’re an interesting lot…

i don't see too much ripping going on in that thread that doesn't involve quotes of dumb sh!t said on this board.

that being said, i''d very much like for you to start “As the Nitwit Lions Turn”.

i'd be very interested to see how well this board could play that game lol

Thanks for your encouragement, Willie…but no thanks. It was actually meant as sarcasm.

They rip on Hawk fans plenty with their own spin on it. Their board, their prerogative but when they come on a Hawk board with their self-righteous BS, it gets old in a hurry.

you sound mentally stable.

what a great post to refute the fact that iowa fans are irrational.
That’s rich coming from you lil feller, mentally stable and rational is what most would think of you when they see some of your tweets / posts.

“Y’all” tried buying our table a beer at big 10s a few years back - was with a couple national champs who wore the hawk singlet. Your fanboy effort was sad - and one of Iowa’s legends was just laughing and making fun of you - I didn’t know who you were. I’ll say hi to you in Ann Arbor and buy you a beer if I hurt your feelings.

I was definitely bothered by the booing. Not how it should be handled of course.

Obviously nothing in the same stratosphere as what Iowa sports fans have done in the past at home (throw beer cans at black wrestlers, scream racial epithets, boo football players when they incur season ending injuries, etc.), but I agree that booing Spencer was out of character and reflected poorly on us.
You are truly a F’ing idiot!

I was there and the boos were very loud. I expected that and it isn't a big deal. However, the Penn State crowd was also the most vulgar of any we have been to this season. I'm all for home environment and heckling. The amount of swearing, shoves, and threats were head and shoulders more than any of the other primary arenas. The OSU's, Michigan, and Nebraska will have a handful of idiots like you would expect. Penn States crowd had them everywhere besides the first row of elderly fans near the team bench. I will say the Penn State women seemed to like our team more than their own. That really doesn't surprise me considering the gene pool they are stuck with.
Imagine that.

1) people love me. i'm a big hit
2) i never fan boy. ever.
3) last year was my first year at BIGs
4) you still don't know who i am

Carver can be tough on opposing wrestlers if they ask for it. If an Iowa kid went elsewhere and showed nothing but respect for the Iowa program and was one of the greatest talents in the history of the sport, I think he’d get a warm welcome if not a standing ovation.

We know how the Nitwits behaved when Spencer lost in the state finals — it was reprehensible. We also know how they behaved when he returned for his last meet against PSU. It wasn’t on the same level of embarrassingly pathetic but was still pretty poor. Not at all what I’d expect from the Carver crowd. If the roles were reversed, I think Hawk fans would treat him much like they treated Steveson.

Why are you pointing to Steveson as an example? It’s totally apples to oranges. CHA gave applause to Steveson for his Olympic accomplishment, not for being a 1x (soon to be 2x) NCAA champ.

If Spencer was an Olympic champ on Friday, I am confident the crowd’s reception would have been different. And the circumstances more comparable to Steveson’s. Can you see (and acknowledge) this?
I was there and applauded him for his overall greatness as a wrestler and entertainer, not just for Olympic gold. Don’t speak for Iowa fans when you weren’t even there and you didnt ask us fans what we were cheering.

Tell me with a straight face that if he didn’t have an international medal that you would have given him a standing-o for the “overall greatness” of being a 1x (likely
2x) NCAA champ who was calling it quits early to join the WWE. Sure, I’ll buy that.

No medal, no standing-o.

It was both. I wouldn’t have applauded him if he had won gold and nothing else at the college level. It was his overall greatness. Not A. Not B. But A+B.

I live in a rural area of southern Pennsylvania. Lehigh University fan. I had the opportunity to watch the next four time NCAA champion, Spencer Lee. Didn’t give a damn that he didn’t get the fall. I watched greatness. Didn’t care that he got booed. I then switched the channel to the Lehigh and Columbia dual and watched Lehigh lose. Steak I grilled was good and the ice cold beer was good. Life is good.

It is a very entertaining board. That’s for sure.
