Suriano to PSU

Good Lord is this the PSU forum or the Iowa forum? I think we have more PSU fans then Iowa fans. Hopefully we can get Lee and/or Hall and go over to the PSU forum and also act like children.

Not spinning anything. Everybody is running low on funds in wrestling. But if you think for a second that if Mark Hall or Spencer Lee wanted to commit to PSU that they wouldn't find the money for them, well...

Not saying they are getting either guy, just saying that money will not be why if they don't get them. This started with a PSU guy stating that Suriano was offered 85% and maybe Cael found out that he wasn't getting Lee and upped the offer. This could be a scenario, but it is really a wild guess. The real question is if Lee decided tomorrow that he wanted to come to PSU, would that 15% stand in the way. No way.
Just so it's out there, I never said Suriano got an 85% scholly. I was just refering to what someone heard from another board. I did however say I think the Suriano decision was delayed until Cael could give him a definitive answer to the type of money they could give him. You are right, I'm totally speculating and said that from the start. I just feel Lee has given word to Cael that he was going elsewhere thus leading Cael to offer Suriano more. Again, It is a wild guess and probably should have kept it to myself. The last time I did this on a message board was a few years ago on bleachercoaches and took all kinds of shots from everyone. During Nick Roberts redshirt year at Ohio State, I stated that I felt he would eventually end up at UPJ. I saw what Tomasello was doing, felt Nick was better suited for DII and UPJ had a nice program 15 minutes from his house. I took a beating for that one but ended up being right. On this prediction, I am praying I look like a jackass when all is said and done.

Not sure exactly how I'm acting like a child but I really do apologize. Not my intention at all...

Yes, this was reported on BWI by an anonymous poster. You could be right, but I don't follow the logic. Are you thinking that Cael was holding off a possible commitment from the 2nd ranked recruit in 2016 over the final 15% and then when he found out about Lee he said, WTH, and upped the ante.

A more likely scenario would be that he found out about Lee and he went and got Cortez, Suriano is quoted as saying he made his decision before finding out about Cortez. But for you to be right, I would think that Lee is announcing any day now. Recruiting is so fluid, if Cortez had any effect on the scholarship money for Lee it's highly doubtful that PSU would handcuff themselves on something that won't be decided for months or a year.

Most likely scenario IMO is it may now be really, really difficult for PSU to take both Hall and Lee but they know it is unlikely they will land both. They are covered no matter what now, and if they get one, they'll have the money. If both would decide on PSU (extremely unlikely) some money is probably getting shifted around. But that is just a wild guess. Iowa, I would guess is in a similar situation with Marinelli, Young, Mejia, Renteria and also possibly bringing in a kid like Happel.

Went to bed last night bummed over the Suriano news, but woke up this morning feeling much better cause I realized....
- Saw on BWI that Suriano received an 85% scholly money offer and he's out of state. Which is pretty darn high.
- PSU already signed a bunch of guys a couple years ago (the three Ns) two of which are out of state.
- Cortez didn't transfer over to PSU for nothing, and he's also an out of state pick up.
- Unless guys are wrestling for Cael for free, he's running short on scholly money.
- We have a bunch of scholly money freed up from the graduating senior class last year.
- We have a lot of in state studs in our current line up.
- Most importantly Mejia > Suriano. Mejia has way more upside, IMO. I think if he wrestled freestyle, you'd be hearing way more hype about him.
- Even more importantly, we have the best lightweight coaches and maybe best freestyle coaches in general in the Brands Brothers.
- Almost as important, we have the greatest fan base in all of college wrestling, and we support our Hawkeyes during and after their collegiate careers.
Let me ruin your sleep tonight then. Actual scholarship dollars are meaningless vs the 9.9 limit. Fraction of scholarship is the only NCAA limit. In state or out of state means NOTHING vs the limit.

Yes, I feel Cael offered Suriano a set amount with the stipulation that if Lee goes elsewhere they would up the scholarship offer. I think this is why Suriano delayed his decision. Again, I am completely speculating here. I don't know anymore than the next guy. I also don't feel what Cortez got had any bearing on the Suriano deal. I do however think the Cortez signing puts Red somewhere else. Also, I did say earlier in another post that I expect a decision very shortly from Lee.

You're an idiot. So you think the same percentage of a scholarship offer made to a student athlete in-state who qualifies for in-state tuition equals to the same dollar amount when that same percentage of scholarship money is offered to an out-of-state student athlete who has to pay out of state tuition? Ok

Clearly a disconnect here...

I'm just playing about CP. I actually like 90% of his take on wrestling. I hope TnT can pull Lee away from Cael.

I think we were out on the Hall sweepstakes for awhile now and Cael knows this much. I think we are already sitting pretty in those weight ranges without him so I'm not all that disappointed. As for Lee, I tend to agree there as well but hoping I get a pleasant surprise. Either way, PSU is potentially stacked as it is. No way I can be too disappointed if you are correct. Guess what I'm saying is a PSU fan would have to be an idiot if their world crashes after the haul we've made the past 3 years.

I think what he is saying is you can give a tuition waiver and it does not count as dollars but rather a tuition waiver and they get 9.9 of them or who knows 9 or 10. I am not sure how they figure the 9.9 out. So if out of state tuition is 30000 dollars and instate is 15000 lets say. They can give an out of state kid a full tuition waiver and it costs them 1 tuition waiver and not 30,000 dollars. This way you can give tuition waivers to the out of state kids and room and board and books etc to the instate kids.

So if I give an out of state kid a 30,000 dollar tuition waiver for a school that cost a total of 50000 to go to, I have given him a 60% scholly. However, I have not really given him 30,000 dollars from my recruiting budget, but rather, I have given him one of my tuition waivers. It is not like a school that has lets say 10 scholarships and costs 35,000 dollars to go to instate has 350,000 in scholarship money. They could technically have as much as 500,000 dollars.

I hope that makes sense. Lets put it this way. When I was coaching, if we gave a kid from out of state money, he still had to pay out of state tuition. If we gave him a full scholarship he would get instate tuition. So we had to give an out of state kid a full scholarship for the first semester and then he would get residency that first semester. The next semester we would not give any money and he paid for it himself. Then the next year we could give a half scholarship and it counted against us as money. It used to drive us nuts that other schools could just give an out of state tuition waiver and it only counted as instate dollar amount.

Maybe this has changed since I have not been coaching for over 20 years, but I am guessing it has not.

Easy way to see it is it takes more % of the 9.9 to give an out of state kid the same amount of aid as an in state kid. IE it takes more of the 9.9 to give an out of state kid $20,000 of aid than an in state kid getting the same. You can stretch the 9.9 further on in state kids.

Depends on schools $$ towards scholarships/programs. i.e. are they fully funded. This doesn't apply to big conferences members but smaller colleges and programs on the verge of being cut it certainly plays a role.

It's safe to say people giving specifics about scholarships and $$ r guessing.

Despite all evidence to the contrary.
MN, You have always thought you were more important than me and others on this board and have attacked and bullied others including with different opinions with a condescending attitude. Actually Gobblin has not as much, despite his comments in this thread. He is probably just sick of me calling him out. You repeatedly call me names hoping it will stick or drive me away, but it won't. Especially you MN, and a few of your internet buddies, have always been particularly jealous of me for some reason I can't figure out, nor do I care to try, although it is rather tiresome dealing with narcissistic people. It is clear in your pattern of responses over the years. You will have a few staunch defenders who attack me so they can feel part of your group, or whatever, but I receive many private messages who agree with me about several on this board. Since you can't stop with the insults over the years, I challenge many of the quieter people on this board to watch my posts, and MN's posts and see who acts more reasonable. Regardless, I'm not going away despite your insults and bullying. Like I said, I've got messages of support by more that you know (and some you know) who are sick of your condescending attitude.

Hawknut...we talking about the same MNHawk? Dude is about as standup as they come...at least for message board knuckleheads like us. Let it go bro.

I get it...you're frustrated we didn't pick up a big name. Me too...but even the coaches get surprised on these things. So chill, get a beer out of the fridge on me (I'll owe you one at B1Gs or something) and have a great evening.

You're a insecure compulsive liar with fits of delusional paranoia and narcissistic rage... I looked it up on Web MD.

I ALMOST feel sorry for you.

Hawknut I have read your post for nearly 10 years now in the lounge, dude your at the top of the list when it comes to being argumentative sob with a lot of good posters. The thing I really notice about you is you love to dish it out but you can't handle it when someone throws it back at you.

Dam some of u act like worse than kids.
We all want the Hawks to get the best they can and none of us on this message board can do anything about it. There is no sense in name calling and agruing us fans have to get along. Just my 2 cents worth

He's far from alone in this. It kind of like a few of the bro's like to pile on if they feel they've got back-up. Then it's a free fire zone on the original poster--usually throwing in personal insults and name calling.

Let's not paint Hawknut out to be anything original or unique as it relates to board comments--IMO.

His thesis was that PSU was running out of money because they were offering out of state scholarships. I said that has nothing to do with how much money PSU has left because it is the scholarships that count, not the dollars. I am 100% correct.
