The Elon Musk Twitter shitshow

Most of the reports about things that Elon supposedly does with Starlink end up being inaccurate.
Agree with you but this one seems to be accurate based on Musk's response.

Elon Musk has been scrambling to defend his decision to block Ukraine's access to Starlink in 2022 near Crimea — and his latest explanation involves blaming the US government.

Access to Starlink in the territory near Crimea was "turned off" because the US has sanctions against Russia, Musk said. Starlink is not allowed to turn access on in Crimea without government approval, he said.

"If I got a request from the president type of thing — from the American president, to be clear — then I would have turned it on," Musk said about the use of Starlink in Crimea. "No such request came through."

Musk made the comments during an episode of "The All-In Podcast" that was uploaded on the Musk-owned X, previously known as Twitter, on September 12.

Imagine a world 5-10 years from now….Russia suddenly takes down some of our military satellites.

Elon declines American request to launch replacements via SpaceX as that may risk an unreasonable escalation with Russia.

Now in that specific scenario, probably Boeing would come through. But it’s still unbelievable that this is where we are at….beholden to a Putin fan boy.

I saw the video of his explanation. Assuming that he is telling the truth, which isn't a given I suppose, that means that Starlink over Crimea was turned off in 2022, not recently to interfere with a Ukraine attack on the Russian military, right? I think that is what is being alleged. He said in the video that they recently got an urgent request from Ukraine to turn it on over Crimea when the attack was imminent and that they declined because they don't believe they have the authority to do so. If he is saying that he would turn it on if the U.S. President requested him to do so, it seems like it would be simple enough for the President to make the request and make it a non-issue. Still seems like people are making up facts as they see fit to make Musk into a villain here. I'm not convinced that it is justified, despite him being a bit of a loose cannon with his opinions.

His explanation is just more bullshit.

Crimea is still considered "Ukraine".

Maybe. A snopes article today on the subject says:

"We have reached out to the U.S. Department of Treasury for confirmation that the existing U.S. sanctions would prohibit activating Starlink access in Crimea, but as of this writing, we had not received a reply. We also contacted Mykhailo Fedorov, deputy prime minister for innovation, education, science and technology development and minister of digital transformation of Ukraine, and we will update this article if or when we receive responses."

Snopes

Maybe we will get an answer to that. Regardless, Musk didn't turn off starlink coverage to thwart an attack. He didn't turn it on when requested by the Ukranians. There appears to be an easy enough solution now that Musk is on the record saying he would turn it on if asked to do so by the President. If our government wants Starlink coverage over Crimea, it appears that they just need to say so.

Edit: Yes, Crimea is Ukraine IMO. The "maybe" is about whether Musk's explanation is bullshit.

Which blows Musk's argument up.

I suppose that would depend upon how the sanctions documentation is worded. Then there is separately the issue of whether Elon Musk has ever turned off coverage to thwart an attack as often alleged. Evidence woud seem to point to no. Finally, there once again appears to be a straight forward solution going forward. If our government goes on record requesting that SpaceX turn on coverage over Crimea, then it becomes a non-issue. I know, it is more desirable for some to attack Elon Musk for things that we don't really know all of the facts on.

If Ukrainians were paying for coverage over their sovereign territory, that IS their territory.

Again, I don't know how the sanctions are worded. You probobably don't either. Crimea has been under Russian control. Clarification has been requested, but there is a clear solution going forward. If the U.S. government doesn't act on that clear solution, that is telling of bigger behind the scenes issues, and it is hard to hold Musk responsible.

It is still internationally recognized as Ukrainian territory; which would include coverage they are paying for.

Which is WHY they were "surprised" it was outside the areas of connectivity when they tried to attack.
And the excuse Musk gave is that it would "escalate" the war, which - AGAIN - is bullshit.

Musk is doing what his Russian and Saudi puppetmasters want; he is 100% beholden to them to keep Twitter afloat.

Your unwaivering refusal to ever take a step back on any issue and consider other possibilities is impressive.

Here, those "other possibilities" do not make any sense.

Maybe you're just too easily swayed by propaganda and bullshit.

Russia has been declared a state sponsor of terrorism, and he is aiding its government. The US Government has every right to seize Starlink and freeze his assets

No need for this

Just force him off the Boards and any operational decisions, where they may impact US Govt interests. Those, then, running the businesses can ignore his insane requests. He can still hold his company stocks.

The blue check boxes have ruined one of the best things about Twitter which is the reply to a Tweet. Now you have to scroll through blue check box replies which have nothing to do with the original tweet. They are terrible replies, advertise their own video or a product. Really sucks as top replies were often hilarious.

It is hard to keep up. So Elon Musk is a Russian puppet because he has refused since 2022 to turn on Starlink over Crimea, but he also somehow turned it off right in the middle of an attack last week? I mean the logistics alone are crazy complicated. In a very short period of time, the attack has to be detected by Russian forces and communicated back to Putin's people. Putin's people have to get a hold of Elon, and then Elon has to turn it off. Do you think he has an app on his phone where he turns off a global satellite network like we turn off bluetooth or something? Never mind the fact that the network has been disabled over the area since 2022. It is mind bottling.

A police chief, while riding his bike, was intentionally hit by a 17-year-old who later posted it on social media. The news article originally posted it as a crash which drew outrage from Elon and the paper later posted an update that it was an intentional hit after the scumbag 17-year-old posted the video on social media.

Is there a conspiracy by the media to intentionally lie about the intention of the incident (to protect the teen driver)? Of course not. I am not sure exactly what Elon's point is. Is there a media level of interest in this incident vs. a shooting of a black person? No. Or if the biker was black vs. a white driver? No. There I can see arguments made.

Several things I find amazing in the usual lefty tantrums in this thread..

1. You're all trying to dunk on the man and twitter/x by using his platform lmfao 😂

2. It's amazing thinking that anyone including Ukraine is entitled to musk's technology. He dispatched starlink so the citizens could keep informed, not so the Ukraine government and literal nazi factions could use the system as an instrument of war to kill others.

Tl;dr version: Musk still owns the left and the left still loves to cry and feel entitled to things they didn't earn.
