This forum will get ugly next year

When we are worse and our coach and almost half of our players on the floor are all McCaffreys. This forum will be so entertaining
Iowa won't be worse unless Toussaint isn't the athlete we expect him to be. To have one person that can beat his man off the dribble and stay in front of his man on defense makes this team automatically better next year whether Cook comes back or not.

Awesome, we are putting the outcome of the season on a frosh PG? Joe W. was one of the highest rated players in his class and look at the season he had? You think the head coach plays Joe T. over his own son? That’s entertaining. How many horrible turnovers did Conner have tonight? He’s shooting somewhere around 20% from the field in conference play. He constantly picks up the ball. He honestly shouldn’t be playing and all of a sudden he’s going to give significant minutes to a freshman? Come on...

Iowa misses having a physical bench player like Pemsl. He was key and brought energy to the ISU game.

I also expect big things from Nunge. As a true freshman he was well beyond Kriener and Kriener is a solid reserve.

If Cook returns next year then Iowa is a shoe in for 20+ wins. Even if he leaves I expect a good season regardless of freshman contributors.

Michigan beat Villanova by 27, Providence by 19 and North Carolina by 17.

No huge shame in getting shellacked by one of the best teams in the country.

It is all about the 3 with this team (and if you're paying attention, 90% of all other college BBall teams), when they shoot like this they getblown out like this....all the stupid miscues get erased if they hit half their three's tonight like they did against the ill whine I.

7 more three's = 21 points much different game.

Fans like you should be forced to watch 200 college games with teams not ranked in the top 10 and not named Iowa. You'll quickly realize that we're not some rare anomaly on the college game landscape.

You have no idea if Toussaint is all you think he is by only seeing highlight videos. At 5-9 he may be more of a liability they JBO is.
Iowa will never improve to where us fans think Iowa should be until Fran leaves or he unloads his useless assistants.
Start by replacing Speraw and Dillard with coaches that actually can recruit and teach defense and maybe we as fans can see a major improvement next year.
If everything stays status quo, we'll go though this all over again next year.

We would be smart to cut bait a year early, my guess is that Barta will give him another couple years to fail back to the point where Lick left this team.

That is, indeed, the likely trajectory for the program. This guy is not going to start magically recruiting top 30 players. We’re locked into a 60 year old coach who is just good enough (most years) to be retained.

By the time Patrick is a senior, I expect Iowa to be a bottom four team. Then Fran will take his millions and retire someplace warm, and spend his time screaming at the pool guy and the mailman.

There is nothing on the horizon next year that suggests Iowa will be substantially different and better IMO. We would be smart to cut bait a year early, my guess is that Barta will give him another couple years to fail back to the point where Lick left this team.

Not sure about the horizon, but there is something in the rear view mirror......the major difference between last year and this is the maturity of this team.

If you look further back during Fran’s tenure I think the evidence says that when he has a team heavy with juniors and seniors we’re pretty good. My guess is that we will be better next year than we were this year....which would be pretty damn good.

Bottom line is if you’re a hater you probably shouldn’t watch next year.....

Where are you getting 5'9?

Everything I've see says 6 foot. I know I've seen videos of him dunking so pretty sure not 5'9.

I have no idea if he'll even play next year but I can promise you he will be a huge defensive upgrade from Jbo.

I would put Weiskamp and Connor as the primary factor for improvement.

The bad defenders from last year haven't gotten much better we just dont have as many on the court.

If you were to throw Pemsl or Nunge in at the 3 again with JBO as the only guy who can handle the ball all game it would look just like last year.

Is C.J. Frederick a non-factor at this point?..........

Claiming the kid is gonna be all Big Ten and be the savior is a bit of a stretch.

I think he will come in and be s serviceable PG and will be able to help defensively. Overall my expectations for the kid is to play 10-12min and be a defensive force for us. Scoring will be a bonus, but I look for him to drive and kick. Just my opinion.

Frederick or Toussaint?

The disagreement I have with your premise is one) this Iowa team is filled with players who have 2-3 seasons of significant game experience and two) these Iowa players have a low ceiling athletically and talent-wise.

Iowa overachieved this year. Will they again next year? I don't know. But I think after nine years it's pretty conclusive this is as good as it will get under Fran. The real question is how you see the Iowa program. Iowa will never have the consistency of a Duke or Michigan State, without question, but if you don't believe it's possible for Iowa to establish a higher bar than where they're at now you are comfortable with Fran. And there's no point in discussing further.

Me, personally, I think Iowa can do a little better. In fact, I know they can. My first taste of Iowa basketball was the early Dr. Tom years. A similar benchmark should be strived for today. Using the tired "Lickliter" excuse is as lame as it is steeped in circular reasoning. Iowa can and should strive for better.

What I don’t understand is the “Iowa can never be like Duke or Michigan State” comments. Why not? Duke and Michigan State weren’t always the power houses they are now.

UCLA and Indiana used to be the best of the best. Where are they now?

Saying you can’t recruit the better players to Iowa is BS too. George Raveling proved otherwise. Heck, Iowa State is able to get better athletes to their cow pasture campus than Iowa is.....and Iowa has a MUCH better basketball history than they do.

You apparently know nothing about basketball. JT is a player that as pg skills, which currently don’t have on this roster.
He is going to play a lot and yes over Connor. JBo will play a lot of 2 and if he plays like he did against Michigan. He will be sitting on the bench.

Only Baer and possibly Cook will leave. Nunge and Pemsl come off redshirt years, and Toussaint and Patrick will bolster areas of need. If anything, Iowa will again have too many players.

I think that if Pemsl had been able to play this year, Iowa would gave probably won another 3 games. He has a knack for getting opposing interior players off their game.

One game not the problem. How many blow out losses in last few games? THey were blown out at OSU, at Wisky, at home by Rutgers, and blown out by Michigan. This team did overachieve to get where it is, but Iowa never is going to go to BTT or NCAA with a team that can make a run because Fran doesn't build his teams with Solid defense that keeps you in all games.

Michigan defense had a lot to do with Iowa guards shooting poorly. They ran Iowa guards off the 3pt line and Iowa guards couldn't make them pay by finishing in the lane.

Good point about the assistants. I honestly have no idea what they do. Maybe they provide alot of insight in practice... But they look worthless on gameday .. Unless fran is suspended and need a temp coach

IMO next year depends on many factors, but the following are critical: 1) does FM upgrade assistant coaches 2) have the redshirts grown in their skills and freshman 3) who leaves the program. If all align it could be a better year. If not more of the same or worse which in all likelihood will be the case. I no longer have any confidence in FM's ability to field a competitive BBall team throughout an entire season.

IA will be a top 15 team next year if Cook returns and a top 20 team if he doesn't. Everybody back with another year of experience except for Baer (and possibly Cook) while adding Nunge, Pemsl, Fredrick, Joe T, and Patrick is a team with some serious talent.

How good IA is next year depends on two key considerations (as others have said):

1) PG play - either Joe T or a significantly improved Connor needs to be effective against quick, multi-dimensional guards
2) Fran keeps to a rotation of 9 as he will have many weapons (unfortunately one of them may not be a PG) next year.

Fran likes his staff. Folks need to give up the CHANGE ASSISTANTS narrative. Aint gonna happen unless someone retires.

My 1st taste of Iowa basketball was Ralph Miller and then Lute Olsen. All else pales in comparison to those coaches and teams.

Yeah ISU proves that multiple different coaches can get talented out of states guards to this state.

Floyd, Eustacy, Morgan, McDermott, Hoiberg, Prohm all brought in really good guards.

The problem is Fran. Whatever hes doing in recruiting doesn't work.

Maybe Tusant breaks the streak for him? We'll see.

I was simply making a point IMO to be successful next year. So, CHANGE ASSISTANTS was one factor from my perspective not a narrative. Just an FYI.
